Effective and selective adsorption of uranyl ions by porous polyethylenimine-functionalized carboxylated chitosan/oxidized activated charcoal composite

Composite materials have elicited much interest because of their superior performance in the removal of toxic and radioactive uranyl ions from aqueous solutions.With polyethyleneimine as a functional group,carboxylated chitosan as a matrix,and oxidizing activated carbon as a nanofiller,this study synthesized a novel environment-friendly polyethylenimine-functionalized carboxylated chitosan/oxidized activated charcoal(PCO)biocomposite with a unique three-dimensional porous structure.PCO was synthesized through an easy chemical cross-linking method.Detailed characterization certified the formation of the unique three-dimensional porous structure.The obtained PCO was used to remove uranyl ions from an aqueous solution,demonstrating the maximum adsorption capacity of 450 mg·g^(−1).The adsorption capacity of PCO decreased by less than 7.51%after five adsorption-desorption cycles.PCO exhibited good adsorption selectivity(K_(d)=3.45×10^(4) mL·g^(−1))for uranyl ions.The adsorption mechanism of PCO was also discussed.The material showed good potential for application in the treatment of wastewater containing uranyl ions.

A simple fluorescent sensor for highly sensitive detection of UO_(2)2+

Extensive application of nuclear energy has caused widespread environmental uranium contamination.New detection approaches without complicated sample pretreatment and precision instruments are in demand for on-site and in-time determination of uranyl ions in environmental monitoring, especially in an emergency situation. In this work, a simple and effective fluorescent sensor(Z)-N’-hydroxy-4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)benzimidamide(TPE-A) with aggregation-induced emission(AIE) character was established and studied. It could realize to detect UO_(2)2+via quenching the fluorescence of its aggregation-induced emission, with good selectivity and sensitivity. Such strategy shows a wide linear range from 5.0 × 10^(-8)mol/L to 4.5 × 10^(-7)mol/L(R^(2)= 0.9988) with exceptional sensitivity reaching 4.7 × 10^(-9)mol/L, which is far below the limit for uranium in drinking water(30 μg/L, ca. 1.1 × 10-7mol/L) stipulated by the WHO.A response time less than four minutes make it rapid for uranyl ion measurement. It was applied for detection of uranyl ion in spiked river water samples with recoveries in the range of 98.7%-104.0%, comparable to those obtained by ICP-MS. With the advantages of portable apparatus, rapid detection process and high sensitivity, TPE-A can serve as a promising fluorescent sensor for the detection of UO_(2)2+in environmental water samples.

Study on the energy transfer between UO_2^(2+) and Eu^(3+) in sol-gel derived titania matrix by luminescence spectroscopy

The TiO2 gel doped with UO22+ and Eu3+ has been prepared by a sol-gel method. The quenching of the UO22+ emission by Eu3+ and the energy transfer from the excited state of UO22+ to the ground state of Eu3+ have been investigated. The energy transfer has been studied by the measurement of luminescence lifetime τ, calculations of energy transfer efficiency ηET and energy transfer rate WET. The experimental results indicated that the quenching is combined static and dynamic mechanism, but the static mechanism is dominant.
