Assessing parameter sensitivity in a university campus COVID-19 model with vaccinations

From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,universities have experienced unique challenges due to their dual nature as a place of education and residence.Current research has explored non-pharmaceutical approaches to combating COVID-19,including representing in models different categories such as age groups.One key area not currently well represented in models is the effect of pharmaceutical preventative measures,specifically vaccinations,on COVID-19 spread on college campuses.There remain key questions on the sensitivity of COVID-19 infection rates on college campuses to potentially time-varying vaccine immunity.Here we introduce a compartment model that decomposes a campus population into constituent subpopulations and implements vaccinations with timevarying efficacy.We use this model to represent a campus population with both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals,and we analyze this model using two metrics of interest:maximum isolation population and symptomatic infection.We demonstrate a decrease in symptomatic infections occurs for vaccinated individuals when the frequency of testing for unvaccinated individuals is increased.We find that the number of symptomatic infections is insensitive to the frequency of testing of the unvaccinated subpopulation once about 80%or more of the population is vaccinated.Through a Sobol’global sensitivity analysis,we characterize the sensitivity of modeled infection rates to these uncertain parameters.We find that in order to manage symptomatic infections and the maximum isolation population campuses must minimize contact between infected and uninfected individuals,promote high vaccine protection at the beginning of the semester,and minimize the number of individuals developing symptoms.

Background: The university of Wisconsin (UW) and histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) solutions are the two most frequently used liver graft preservation fluids. The present study aimed to compare their efficacy in end-stage hepatic alveolar echinococcosis patients who underwent ex-situ liver resection and autotransplantation (ELRA). Methods: A total of 81 patients received ELRA from August 2010 to March 2018. They were allocated into UW ( n = 48) and HTK groups ( n = 33) based on the type of solutions used. Demographic and operational data were retrospectively analyzed. Primary outcomes included 90-day mortality, incidence of early graft loss, primary dysfunction, and postoperative complications. Results: Demographic and operational characteristics were similarly distributed in the two groups. No statistically significant differences were observed with regard to 90-day mortality (12.77% vs. 12.12%) and early graft loss rate (8.51% vs. 9.09%) between the two groups. Patients in the UW and HTK groups showed a primary dysfunction rate of 27.66% and 27.27%, respectively. The UW group exhibited a higher incidence tendency of biliary complications, albeit with no statistical significance. Conclusions: This is the largest cohort study comparing the efficacy of the UW and HTK organ-preserving solutions in end-stage hepatic alveolar echinococcosis patients in ELRA settings. UW and HTK solutions presented similar efficacy and safety. A randomized clinical trial with larger scale is needed for further investigation in future clinical applications.

The progress of Chinese burn medicine from the Third Military Medical university—in memory of its pioneer,Professor Li Ao

Professor Li Ao was one of the founders of Chinese burn medicine and one of the most renowned doctors and researchers of burns in China. He established one of the Chinese earliest special departments for burns at Third Military Medical university (TMMU) in 1958. To memorialize Professor Li Ao on his 100th birthday in 2017 and introduce our extensive experience, it is our honor to briefly review the development and achievement of the Chinese burn medicine from TMMU. The epidemiology and outcomes of admitted burn patients since 1958 were reviewed. Furthermore, main achievements of basic and clinical research for the past roughly 60 years were presented. These achievements mainly included the Chinese Rule of Nine, fluid resuscitation protocol, experience in inhalation injury, wound treatment strategies, prevention and treatment of burn infections, nutrition therapy, organ support therapies, and rehabilitation. The progress shaped and enriched modern Chinese burn medicine and promoted the development of world burn medicine.

AIM:To assess the prevalence of meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD)in staffs and faculty members of Sichuan university,China.METHODS:The records of the annually systemic physical examination of 4404 consecutive staffs and faculty members of Sichuan university were analyzed retrospectively.Ocular symptoms and signs of ocular surface were evaluated.RESULTS:MGD was diagnosed in 1424 participants(32.3%),with a mean age of 43.0±9.6 y.Of these,718(50.4%)were females and no significant difference was found between males and females.The highest prevalence was found in the age 50-59 y(36.0%).Logistic regression analysis showed that age is an impact factor of MGD(Puniversity is 32.3%,and increases with age.

Research as a Veritable Tool for Enhancing Students’ Job Creation in the 21st Century university Education

This study explores the role of research as a tool for enhancing students’job creation in the context of 21st-century university education.The survey research design was the approach used for this investigation.The researcher created a questionnaire to collect pertinent data for the study from 200 respondents.The questionnaire was duly validated by 3 experts.The internal reliability of the instrument was examined in this study using Cronbach’s alpha(α).Cronbach’s alpha method is able to determine the correlation between the outcomes of each test item and the test’s total score.Google Forms was used to deliver the survey to the respondents electronically.A statistical package was used to calculate the mean and standard deviation.The study hypotheses were also investigated using inferential statistics(t-test)with 198 degrees of freedom and a 0.05 threshold of significance.To determine whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis,the critical value and estimated t-value are compared.Findings suggest that research-oriented education positively impacts students’ability to create job opportunities in the 21st century.Engaging in research projects fosters critical thinking,creativity,and adaptability among students,enabling them to identify and capitalize on emerging trends and market gaps.Furthermore,the study reveals the significance of university-industry collaborations and mentorship programs in enhancing students’entrepreneurial skills and connecting them with practical resources and networks.The implications of this research are significant for educational policymakers,university administrators,and curriculum developers,as it underscores the importance of incorporating research as an integral component of 21st-century university education.
