Intervention Effect of Jianxin Decoction (健心汤) on Serum Cytokine Level of Congestive Heart Failure Patients

Objective: To investigate the intervention effect of Jianxin Decoction (健心汤, JXD) on the cytokine level in serum of patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Methods; Sixty-six patients with CHF were randomly divided into the control group (n = 33) and the trial group (n = 33). The control group received conventional treatment, and the trial group was treated with conventional therapy plus JXD for 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and nitrogen monoxide (NO) in serum and cardiac function were determined. Results: After treatment, the levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and NO were significantly lower than those before treatment (P<0.05, or P<0.01) in the two groups, and the lowering degree of the indices in the trial group was more significantly reduced than that in the control group (P<0.05). And cardiac functions in both groups were improved significantly (P<0.05, or P< 0.01). Conclusion: JXD could prevent and reverse ventricular remodeling so as to ameliorate cardiac function through regulating the levels of cytokines.

Protective Effect and Mechanism of Polysaccharides from Cordyceps cicadae on Acute Liver Injury Induced by D-GlaN in Mice

[Objectives]To observe the protective effect of Cordyceps cicadae polysaccharides on acute liver injury induced by D-galactosamine( D-GlaN) in mice,and to explore its mechanism. [Methods] Seventy-five male Kunming mice were randomly and evenly divided into 5 groups according to the digital table method: normal group( CK)( injected intraperitoneally with saline solution),model group( injected intraperitoneally with D-GlaN),low-dose C. cicadae polysaccharides group( administered with 0. 5 g/kg of C. cicadae polysaccharides solution by gavage),middle-dose C. cicadae polysaccharides group( administered with 1. 0 g/kg of C. cicadae polysaccharides solution by gavage) and high-dose C. cicadae polysaccharides group( administered with 2. 0 g/kg of C. cicadae polysaccharides solution by gavage). After 12 d of administration,the liver histopathological score,liver homogenate indexes( superoxide dismutase,SOD; malondialdehyde,MDA; glutathione peroxidase,GSH-Px; nitric oxide,NO) and serum markers( aspartate transaminase,AST; alanine transaminase,ALT; alkaline phosphatase,ALP; cholinesterase,CHE) of mice in each group were detected. The expression levels of nuclear factor-κB( NF-κB) and tumor necrosis factor-α( TNF-α) in liver tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. [Results]The liver histopathological score and the MDA,NO,AST,ALT,ALP,NF-κB and TNF-α levels were significantly higher( P < 0. 05) and the SOD,GSH-Px and CHE levels were significantly lower( P <0. 05) in the model group compared with the normal group. Compared with those in the model group,the liver tissue histopathological scores in the low-,middle-and high-dose C. cicadae polysaccharides groups were all significantly reduced( P < 0. 05). With the increase of treatment dose,the liver tissue histopathological scores showed a significant decrease( P < 0. 05). Topical biological agents targeting cytokines for the treatment of dry eye disease

Because inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of dry eye disease and Sjogren's syndrome, topical anti-inflammatory agents such as corticosteroids and cyclosporine A have been used to treat inflammation of the ocular surface and lacrimal gland. Systemic biological agents that target specific immune molecules or cells such as tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α, interferone-α, interleukin(IL)-1, IL-6, or B cells have been used in an attempt to treat Sjogren's syndrome. However, the efficacy of systemic biological agents, other than B-cell targeting agents, has not yet been confirmed in Sjogren's syndrome. Several studies have recently evaluated the efficacy of topical administration of biological agents targeting cytokines in the treatment of dry eye disease. Topical blockade of IL-1 by using IL-1 receptor antagonist could ameliorate clinical signs and inflammation of experimental dry eye. Using a mouse model of desiccating stress-induced dry eye, we have demonstrated that topical application of a TNF-α blocking agent, infliximab, could improve tear production and ocular surface irregularity, decrease inflammatory cytokines and Th-1 CD4+ cells on the ocular surface, and increase gobletcell density in the conjunctiva. Although controversy still remains, the use of topical biological agents targeting inflammatory cytokines may be a promising therapy for human dry eye disease.

Study on diagnosis parameters of endometritis in dairy cows

Endometritis in dairy cow herds is a serious economic problem all over the world due to the large economic *** endometritis is an important postpartum disease in dairy cows,but conventional cytobrush diagnosis often gives imprecise *** inflammatory cytokine levels in serum from dairy cows with clinical or subclinical endometritis during the voluntary waiting period may provide valuable information that can serve as a diagnostic tool for the uterine *** objective of this study was to analysis diseaseassociated changes of inflammatory cytokines in serum as potential diagnostic *** study was performed on 28 cows on day 30 after *** on the results of cytological tests,the cows were divided into three groups:clinical endometritis(10 cows);subclinical endometritis(6 cows);healthy control(12 cows).Clinical endometritis was diagnosed by observation of vaginal discharges(> 50%pus) and subclinical endometritis was diagnosed by evaluation of uterine flush cytology(neutrophils > 5.5%) at 4 weeks *** samples were obtained from 28 cows at 4 and 25 weeks postpartum for evaluation of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and Creactive protein(CRP) *** of CRP were greater(P<0.05) in cows with clinical endometritis than in cows with subclinical endometritis and healthy controls,whereas concentrations of TNF-α in both cows with clinical and subclinical endometritis were greater(P<0.005) than in healthy *** conclusion,cows with endometritis have greater inflammatory cytokine concentrations in serum than healthy cows,concentrations of TNF-α and CRP differences were *** endometritis of dairy cows is reflected by concentrations of TNF-α in *** data emphasize the role of TNF-α and CRP for bovine subclinical endometritis,and point the way for analysis of TNF-α as potential candidate parameter associated with subclinical endometritis.
