The colonial effect: Language,trust and attitudes to science as predictors of vaccine hesitancy across Africa

Perceptions of vaccine safety, importance and effectiveness are at the core of vaccine hesitancy around the world, and Africa has had its own share of vaccine revolts. This study uses the 2018 Wellcome Global Monitor on public perceptions of vaccines in 40 African countries to examine the predictors of vaccine *** examines levels of hesitancy from a language perspective, comparing French speakers with others, mostly English speakers. Results show that French speakers were significantly more hesitant about importance and safety, while English speakers and others were more hesitant about effectiveness. This reflects the continuing influence of colonial ties on African countries. Respondents with high levels of trust in social actors(such as national government, journalists, people neighborhood, doctors and nurses) were also more hesitant about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, indicating the importance of non-scientists in influencing vaccine hesitancy. Those with high levels of education were more likely to be hesitant about vaccines in general, indicating that having more education may have an opposite effect. Perception of science as progress was significant for all three hesitancy types, indicating that Africans with more progressive attitudes were less likely to worry about the importance, safety and effectiveness of vaccines. At the country level, there was no overarching predictor, indicating the strong role of local social and cultural *** findings improve our understanding of the drivers of vaccine hesitancy in Africa and provide valuable input for future vaccine policy and health-awareness campaigns.

A trust Evaluation Model for Social Commerce Based on BP Neural Network

Recent years we have witnessed the rapid growth of social commerce in China, but many users are not willing to trust and use social commerce. So improving consumers’ trust and purchase intention has become a crucial factor in the success of social commerce. Business factors, environment factors and social factors including twelve secondary indexes build up a social commerce trust evaluation model. Questionnaires are handed out to collect twelve secondary indexes scores as input of BP neural network and composite score of trust as output. Model simulation shows that both training samples and test samples have low level of average error and standard deviation, which certify that the model has good stability and it is a good method for evaluating social commerce trust.

Perceived trust and Payment Methods: An Empirical Study of MarkaVIP Company

This empirical study focused on investigating the perceived trust surrogated by a number of hy-pothesized factors and its effect on the choice of method of payment. The data were collected using a questionnaire, as the instrument for the primary data collection, with total collected back responses of 214 from customers of MarkaVIP. Structural equation modeling technique was used to fully analyze the data in order to determine what level of the relationship between the constituting factors of the perceived trust and the method of payment. The main findings were related to confirming the seven main hypotheses of the research that were related to testing if some factors were important to forming perceived trust by customers. Four factors (reputation, security, familiarity, and ease of use) were found to have a positive effect and the remaining three were not (privacy, size and usefulness). In addition, having perceived trust meant no preference to any method of payment by the customers.

Co-Design and trust in Social Network’s Websites

This research is focused on internet shoppers co-design, individual tendency of trust, trust belief, and purchase intention. An online questionnaire was set out in survey form on Google Docs in or-der to collect data. The survey was conducted of participants in Mongolia. 236 usable responses were obtained from Mongolian potential customers in order to examine constructs. The findings suggest that co-design and individual tendency of trust have significant positive effect on the trust levels throughout intention to purchase.

With two different approaches, sociological and philosophical, we try to understand how social networks support new shapes of happiness and trust in an economic crisis context.

Building up trust in Different Culture Contexts＂ Case Studies from the Animation Game Industry

This paper aims to explore the stages and processes of building up inter-firm trust in different national culture contexts. This is because the manufacturing system has increasing extents increasingly toward internationally network and inter-firm collaboration. trust and commitment become important in inter-firm relationship. The way of building up trust varies from companies to companies, since it is impacted greatly by cultures and values. To investigate the details of trust, case studies,which used in animation game industry--an emerging industry based on project management and collaboration, were chosen. The research addresses activities in three stages--trust formation, trust development, and trust *** and functionality of four types of trust--＂competence, reliability, goodwill and loyalty＂ are demonstrated from practice perspective through case studies, which is further linked with culture dimensionswith a framework model. The paper also raises some new research questions and themes for further research.

A Distributed trust Based Secure Communication Framework for Wireless Sensor Network

The wireless sensor network is an emerging technology, which is used to sense and monitor the environment. As the nodes are deployed in an open environment, the security is one of the essential factors. The cryptography techniques can ensure confidentiality, integrity and authentication. However, wireless sensor network also needs to deal with inside and outside attackers. To deal with outside attackers, attacks by compromised or malicious nodes, trust management system is suggested by many researchers in the area of wireless sensor network. trust management system can be implemented in various applications for security management such as secure data aggregation, secure cluster head selection, trusted routing, access control, etc. Many researchers provide different kind of solutions for these secure applications based on trust management. However, to incorporate, all such applications on a single sensor node in the network, it is essential to design and develop a trust management system, which considers various aspects and applications of wireless sensor network. As a result, in this paper, we would like to propose a parameter and trust factor based secure communication framework and design a trust management system for wireless sensor networks. Our main contribution is to identify various parameters and trust factors which influences on trust in wireless sensor network and developing a framework for a trust management system based on various parameters and trust factors. The working of the proposed model is shown by simulation experiments conducted in MATLAB for the application of secure communication, data aggregation and intrusion detection in wireless sensor networks.

A Non-Monotone trust Region Method with Non-Monotone Wolfe-Type Line Search Strategy for Unconstrained Optimization

In this paper, we propose and analyze a non-monotone trust region method with non-monotone line search strategy for unconstrained optimization problems. Unlike the traditional non-monotone trust region method, our algorithm utilizes non-monotone Wolfe line search to get the next point if a trial step is not adopted. Thus, it can reduce the number of solving sub-problems. Theoretical analysis shows that the new proposed method has a global convergence under some mild conditions.

Relationship of general trust with individual health and life related factors among frail elderly residents at home in Hokkaido rural areas in Japan

General trust (GT), defined as a default expec-tation of other people’s trustworthiness, is assumed to be a predictor for promotion of health and welfare in individuals as well as for strengthening of social capital in the community. An improvement of health and quality of life of the elderly is recently a crucial agenda. Thus, the purpose of the study was to explore which factors regarding health and life associated with GT among frail elderly people living at homes in Japanese rural area. The study selected the subjects who were designated within three mildest degrees in seven stages of long-term care levels and who met at an item and more in the national basic check-list. 209 participants were interviewed by trained health personnel using a structured questionnaire. GT was measured by a dichotomous outcome of inquiring “do you trust people in general?”. In the univariable analysis, educational status (p = 0.004), activity competence index including instrumental activity of daily living (IADL) (p = 0.020), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) (p = 0.029) and Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) (p = 0.010) were significantly related to GT. By logistic regression analysis using a stepwise method with a like-lihood ratio, educational status alone was sig-nificantly associate with GT (p = 0.010, odds ratio = 1.195 [95% confidence interval;1.043 - 1.371]). Health related factors had nothing to do with GT. Our finding suggested that the higher educated elderly might have had more opportunities to encounter the others and more indispensability to deliberately discern their trustworthiness than the lower, and consequently had higher GT through social intelligence being strengthened.

An Evaluation Approach of Subjective trust Based on Cloud Model

As online trade and interactions on the internet are on the rise, a key issue is how to use simple and effective evaluation methods to accomplish trust decision-making for customers. It is well known that subjective trust holds uncertainty like randomness and fuzziness. However, existing approaches which are commonly based on probability or fuzzy set theory can not attach enough importance to uncertainty. To remedy this problem, a new quantifiable subjective trust evaluation approach is proposed based on the cloud model. Subjective trust is modeled with cloud model in the evaluation approach, and expected value and hyper-entropy of the subjective cloud is used to evaluate the reputation of trust objects. Our experimental data shows that the method can effectively support subjective trust decisions and provide a helpful exploitation for subjective trust evaluation.
