Temperature-Dependent Fatty Acid Composition Change of Phospholipid in Steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Tissues

In this study, the changes of the fatty acid composition of phospholipid in different tissues(muscle, heart, brain and spleen) of steelhead trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) were analyzed when the water temperature decreased gradually from 16 to 12℃℃, 8℃, 6℃, 4℃, 2 and 1℃℃. Three fish individuals each tank(average weight 70.32 g ± 9.12 g) were collected and used to analysis at each designed temperatures. At normal temperature(16℃), the fatty acid composition of phospholipid of muscle and heart was similar each other. The highest concentration of saturate fatty acids(SFA) was found in the phospholipid of spleen. The brain phospholipid contained higher oleic acid(18:1 n9) than the phospholipid of other tissues at 16℃. When the environmental temperature decreased, the concentration of unsaturated fatty acids of phospholipids in all tissues increased, and accordingly the ratio pf the unsaturated to saturated fatty acids(U/S) and unsaturation index(UI) increased, indicating that steelhead trout can compensate temperature-dependent changes in membrane fluidity by remodeling the fatty acid composition of phospholipids. The changes in the fatty acid composition of phospholipid were tissue-specific. At the early stages of the experiment(16 to 8℃℃), the fatty acid composition of phospholipid changed remarkably in muscle, heart, and spleen. When temperature decreased to less than 8℃, an obvious response of phospholipid fatty acid was observed in all tissues. The change of phospholipid composition of steelhead trout tissues may be affected by both cold stress and starvation when the temperature decreased to 2℃, and the change of phospholipid composition of muscle was very obvious.

Toxicokinetics and the related metabolites in rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) after exposure to decabromodiphenyl ether

Decabromodiphenyl ether(BDE209) is poorly absorbed by mammals,and little information is available on the toxicokinetics of BDE209 and its metabolites in *** the present study,rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) were administered to 100 ng/g and 500 ng/g body wet weight of BDE209 via a single intraperitoneal injection and parent BDE209 and its metabolites were sequentially monitored for 28 *** results showed that toxicokinetic profiles of BDE209 could be described by the one-compartment *** the higher dose group(500 ng/g wet weight),the calculated half-life(t1/2) and elimination rate(ke) were 17.7 d and 0.039/d in the liver,and 100.3 d and 0.007/d in the muscle,*** major methoxylated brominated diphenyl ethers(MeO-BDEs) were detected with 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromo-5-methoxydiphenyl ether(5-MeO-BDE47) being detected in all tissue *** was no significant temporal change of 5-MeO-BDE47 concentration in the muscle,whereas an exponential increase was observed in the ***,the metabolism rate of BDE209 depended on the administered ***209 was hardly accumulated in the muscle of rainbow trout,while the liver was a primary metabolic ***-BDEs were formed via metabolism of BDE209,which probably played a significant role in fish toxicology as a potential indicator.

Declining metabolic scaling parallels an ontogenetic change from elongate to deep-bodied shapes in juvenile Brown trout

Body shape and metabolic rate can be important determinants of animal performance,yet often their effects on influential traits are evaluated in a non-integrated *** creates an important gap because the integration between shape and metabolism may be crucial to evaluate metabolic scaling ***,we measured standard metabolic rate in 1-and 2-years old juvenile brown trout Salmo trutta,and used a geometric morphometrics approach to extricate the effects of ontogeny and size on the link between shape and metabolic *** evidenced near-isometric ontogenetic scaling of metabolic rate with size,but also a biphasic pattern driven by a significant change in metabolic scaling,from positive to negative ***,the change in metabolic allometry parallels an ontogenetic change from elongate to deep-bodied *** is consistent with the dynamic energy budget(DEB)and surface area(SA)theories,but not with the resource transport network theory which predicts increasing allometric exponents for trends towards more robust,three-dimensional *** addition,we found a relationship between body shape and size independent metabolic rate,with a positive correlation between robustness and metabolic rate,which fits well within the view of Pace-of-Life Syndromes(POLS).Finally,our results align with previous studies that question the universality of metabolic scaling exponents and propose other mechanistic models explaining the diversity of metabolic scaling relationships or emphasizing the potential contribution of ecological factors.

An evaluation of a catch and release trout regulation in Rapid Creek,South Dakota

Often,catch and release regulations are meant to maximize a fisheries potential to create trophy fish.I evaluated adult Brown trout populations at five locations within Rapid Creek within Rapid City,SD over a two-year *** each year,one of these locations was within a catch and release area,while two were *** 2012,density and biomass estimates were higher in a site located outside of the catch and release ***,size structure within the catch and release area was only significantly larger than one of the two sites outside of the regulation *** relative weight values were inversely related to density estimates,with the lowest density sites having the highest mean relative ***,a site outside of the catch and release area had the highest abundance and biomass estimates in *** cumulative length distribution was significantly different between the site within the catch and release area and the two located *** weight was significantly higher in the catch and release area than the two sites *** population characteristics within the catch and release area were not consistently better than outside,it is more likely that factors such as habitat and density dependence are impacting the Brown trout population more than the regulation itself.

Certain wild animals represent sentinels to address issues related to environmental pollution,since they can provide integrative data on both pollutant exposure and biological *** their technological benefits,PBDEs are considered a threat to environmental health due to their persistence,toxicity,and capacity to be *** pollutants have been found geographically widespread in fish,particularly in predator species such as *** aim of this work is to critically review the applicability and usefulness of wild trout for assessing PBDEs in freshwater *** reports include data from highly industrialized areas as well as areas from remote regions with relatively low human activity,including European and North American great lakes and freshwater environments in Europe,Greenland,subarctic areas and Patagonia,respectively.A summary of relevant factors were grouped into organism-specific factors(food habits,age,size,lipid content,sex and reproduction,tissue type,mechanism of contaminant uptake and metabolism),and PBDE levels in the surrounding environment(sediment).Five wild trout species[rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss),brown trout(Salmo trutta),lake trout(Salvelinus namaycush),arctic char(Salvelinus alpinus),and brook trout(Salvelinus fontinalis)],collected worldwide within the 1994 to present time frame,were *** techniques(principal component analysis-PCA)and mapping approach,showed clear differences in geographic distribution patterns of PBDE levels in trout depending on the region studied:wild trout from European and North American great lakes have the highest PBDE *** pattern could be due to high industrial activity at these locations.A correlational approach used to explore intraspecific relationships between PBDE levels and morphometry,showed positive relationships only for brown ***,brown trout showed the highest trout-to-sediment ratios,which is suggestive of a relatively greater capa

This study examined the spatial and temporal characteristics of brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis and brown trout Salmo trutta redds in two sites from two creeks in the Black Hills of South Dakota, USA. Spawning began in both streams in early October and continued through mid-November. Significant spatial clustering was only observed on both Rapid Creek sites, where-as random redd development was observed in both of the sites on Box Elder Creek. Based on visual observations, brown trout redds were more abundant in Rapid Creek, where-as brook trout redds were more abundant in Box Elder Creek. Juvenile rainbow trout responses to diets containing distillers dried grain with solubles, phytase, and amino acid supplements

Distillers dried grain with solubles (DDGS) was evaluated in juvenile Shasta-strain rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss diets during a 36-day feeding trial. Two experimental diets containing either 10% or 20% DDGS with supplemented amino acids (lysine, methionine, isoleucine, and his-tidine) and phytase were compared to a fish meal-only control diet. Tanks of trout receiving diets containing either concentration of DDGS weighed significantly less at the end of the trial and had significantly poorer feed conversion ratios than tanks of fish being fed the fish meal- only control. There was no significant difference in individual fish length, weight, condition factor, or any fish health measurements among diet treatments. Both the hepatosomatic index and viscerosomatic index were significantly less in the fish fed 10% DDGS than those fed the control diet. Body fat was significantly greater in the fish receiving 20% DDGS compared to fish fed either of the other two diets. Fillet composition, as determined by crude protein, crude lipid, ash, and water, was not significantly different among fish reared on any of the diets. There was also no significant difference in estimated protein digestibility coefficients among fish receiving any of the diets. The results suggest that DDGS, even if supplemented with essential amino acids and phytase, will lead to decreased juvenile rainbow trout growth at dietary concentrations of at 10% or greater.

Rainbow trout (<i>Oncorhynchus mykiss</i>) Cage Culture: Preliminary Observations of Surface Sediment’s Chemical Parameters and Phosphorus Release in Gokcekaya Reservoir, Turkey

This research was conducted in Gokcekaya Reservoir, which is located on the Sakarya River (Ankara, Turkey). Sediment samples were obtained before and after culture periods at a rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farm with a capacity of 950 t·y-1. Total phosphorus (TP: 8.80 ± 0.50 and 9.10% ± 0.20%), total nitrogen (TN: 17.0 ± 0.20 and 17.05% ± 0.10%), organic matter (OM: 14.40 ± 0.40 and 14.60% ± 0.20%), redox potential (327.00 ± 0.08 and 170.00 ± 4.08 mV), water content (97.68 ± 0.28 and 96.38% ± 0.41%) and total organic carbon (TOC: 11.30 ± 0.10 and 13.40% ± 0.10%) were measured before and after the culture period, respectively. The mean rank order of sediment heavy metal was evaluated as Fe > Mn > Ni > Zn > Cr > Cu. The soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentrations in the sediment pore water were 2.52 ± 0.14 and 7.75 ± 1.18 μg·L-1;ammonium (NH3) was measured as 1.13 ± 0.09 and 1.18 ± 0.06 μg·L-1;nitrite (NO2) was 8.83 ± 0.23, 12.75 ± 0.22 μg·L-1;nitrate (NO3) was elevated at 0.14 ± 0.07 and 0.24 ± 0.02 μg·L-1, and positive phosphorus release remained at low levels: 3.35 μg·m-2d-1 (before the culture period, September 2011) and 11.04 μg·m-2d-1 (after the culture period, April 2012). The data on the sediment and the sediment pore water of the rainbow trout culture in Gokcekaya Reservoir shows that the cage culture in its present condition has no negative effect on sediment quality.
