N:P stoichiometry in Ficus racemosa and its mutualistic pollinator

Aims Nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)are limiting nutrients to life across a variety of ecosystems.N:P stoichiometry,concerning the balance of these two elements,has recently received great ***,little is known about the nature of N:P stoichiometry in obligate *** N:P stoichiometry of Ficus racemosa and its pollinating wasp Ceratosolen fusciceps,an example of coevolving obligate mutualism,was investigated,and the N:P stoichiometric traits of male versus female wasps were *** Findings Nutrient concentrations in *** were much higher than in its host.N enrichment in fig wasp was evidently stronger than phosphorus.N concentrations of male fig wasps were significantly higher than those of females,while P concentrations of female fig wasps were remarkably higher than those ofmale ***,N:P ratios inmale fig wasps were significantly greater than in female fig wasps.N:P ratio in fig-pollinating wasp displayed linear functions to fig N contents,suggesting that N limitation in fig wasps may dominate the nutritional relationship between fig pollinator and its *** wasp population size had significant influences on N concentrations in host fig and female wasp per *** by the nutritional stress of pollinating and parasite insects,fig fruit preferred increasing its diameter first but not nutrient *** forNand P contents of fig pollinators showed seasonal differenceswith greater N:P ratios in dry season than in rainy *** observations suggest that tropical climate change would result in more severe N limitation to fig-pollinating wasp and may further influence the stability of fig–fig wasp mutualism.

The impact of forest microhabitats on physiochemical properties of the soil and that of microbial communities on tropical soils remain poorly *** elucidate the effect of tropical forest stand on leaf litter and soil microbial communities,we studied enzyme activities,microbial biomass,and diversity in three distinct microhabitats in terms of plant richness,diameter at breast height(DBH),and physiochemical properties of soil and litter,each associated with a different Vanilla *** the soil,positive correlations were found between electrical conductivity(EC)and total organic carbon(TOC)with phosphatase activity,and between nitrogen(N)and water-soluble carbon(WSC)content with urease activity(UA).In the litter,the water content was positively correlated with bacterial and fungal biomass,and N and WSC contents were positively correlated with fungal *** correlations were found between plant richness and UA in the soil,plant richness and fungal biomass in the soil and litter,and DBH and fungal biomass in the *** sequencing revealed differences between microhabitats in the relative abundance of some fungal and bacterial taxa and in the bacterial community composition of both litter and *** richness and diversity were different between microhabitats,and,in litter samples,they were negatively correlated with DBH and plant richness,*** contrast,none of the soil and litter physiochemical properties were significantly correlated with microbial *** results show that significant shifts in enzyme activity,microbial biomass,and diversity in the microhabitats were driven by key abiotic and biotic factors depending on the soil or litter sample type.

Response of Somatal Characteristics and its Plasticity to Different Light Intensities in Leaves of Seven tropical Woody Seedlings

Stomatal characteristics and its plasticity were surveyed in leaves of four canopy species, Shoreachinensis, Pometia tomentosa, Anthocephalus chinensis, Calophyllun polyanthum and three middle-layerspecies, Barringtonia pendula, Garcinia hanburyi, Horsfieldia tetratepala, acclimated to different lightconditions for more than one year. All plants stomata are distributed on the abaxial of leaves. Pometiatomentosa and Barringtonia pendula have higher stomatal density and the guard cell length of Anthocephaluschinensis and Calophyllun polyanthum were much greater than others. Stomatal density and stomatal index(ratio of stomatal numbers to epidermal cell number) were increased with growth irradiance increased, whilenumbers of stomata per leaf were higher in the low than the high relative PFD, and stomatal conductance ofleaves was the highest in the 50% of full light except for Anthocephalus chinensis. The relative PFD has littleeffects on the guard cell length of all seven plants. We have also found a significant negative correlationbetween stomatal density and leaf area, but the stomatal conductance was not significantly positive with thestomatal conductance. The analysis of phenotypic plasticity of stomatal characteristics showed: plasticityindex for stomatal index and numbers of stomatal per leaf were similar for canopy and middle-layer species,while the plasticity index of stomatal density and stomatal conductance were significantly greater for canopyspecies than middle-layer species. The high plasticity of canopy species was consistent with the hypothesisthat specialization in a more favorable environment increases plasticity.

A preliminary comparison of the bryoflora of rainforest with similar climate was *** mountain and Wangxia limestone mountain in China(18°57′-19°11′N,109°03′-109°17′E,alt.980-1510 m),and six forests in Ogun state,Nigeria(Oil palms plantation 6°36′11″N,3°56′08″E alt.56 m;Rubber plantation 6°55′09″N,3°42′09″E,alt.72 m;OOU-Biome 6°55′24″N,3°52′25″E,alt.60 m;Apoje7°01′11″N,4°07′11″E,alt.110 m;Cocoa and Kola nuts plantations 7°01′12″N,3°48′22″E,alt.72 m;Onigambari reserve 7°11′28″N,3°52′59″E,alt.160 m) were explored for *** collecting sites weredivided into three:evergreen broadleaved forest,old cultivation of trees and tree plantation *** availablemicrohabitats were searched for *** proceedure for bryological identification of species *** families(Ogun=66%;Hainan=7%) and 62 genera(Ogun=43%;Hainan=31%) were *** have in common 27%families and 26%genera.A total of 34 new genera were add with(Ogun=79%;Hainan=21%).Diversity of genera showed higher index and evenness(H1=4.69;E=89) in Hainan bryoflora thanin Ogun state ones(H1=4.24;E=77).New additions of genera increased Hainan bryoflora from 241 to 248 and to45 of Nigerian *** findings have significant implications for the biodiversity application of the tropicalrainforest.
