History,status and trend about the research of paleoseismology

Paleoseismology was originated in the late nineteen century, but the modern paleoseismology formed at the end of the 1970s. Three stages (appearance, development and maturity) can be identified for paleoseismology in China. Great progress has been made in the aspects of trench technology, recognition signs, dating method and theoretical model, however,they are not developed to such a level at which the highly reliable data can be provided for the probability prediction of earthquakes. The main questions further concerned in the future include the study of geological evidence, chronology and displacement, the theoretical model about reliability, paleoearthquake feature in the region and large-earthquake reoccurrence, and new branches related with the paleoseismology in the stable continent region, usage of new technology and frontier sciences.

Renewable Energy Sources A Promising Opportunity for Remote Mine Sites

Mining industry is a substantial consumer of the energy indispensable to power mining and mineral processing equipment and processes. As more and more mine operations move to remote locations, the access to reliable, secure and environment friendly energy sources becomes a key concern. At present, a great majority of remote mines relies heavily on diesel fuel that has to be transported over long distances. In this context, some of the renewable energy sources such as wind power or solar energy seem to provide potentially interesting and viable alternatives. Mine operations, however, have a very particular character, much different from other industries and from other potential applications of renewable power sources. This paper presents operational conditions of some mining operations, particularly those in remote regions, in the context of their energy needs. The authors analyse current and future capacities to decrease a reliance of remote mines on conventional fuels and energy. The paper also analyses and discusses the conditions to be met by alternative energy sources so that they might become a viable alternative for remote mining operations.

On a Method of Climatological Observations Processing

The task of climate observation data processing is central to the quality of an assessment of future climate change impact. The current state-of-the-art is based on the long-running observation records of the meteorological stations. However, it is common for the developing states to have only relatively short and/or intermittent record histories. The issue becomes even more aggravated under an effort to assess the climatic trends.for specific territories with few meteorological stations. The paper offers a simple and effective technique to handle the climate observations; the technique makes the most complete use of an available data set by counting the data provided by all meteorological stations including those with short records and omissions. The method is based on numeric differentiation of source data samples.
