Brain metastasis in children with stage 4 neuroblastoma after multidisciplinary treatment

Introduction: Brain metastasis is common in relapsed neuroblastoma patients, but the characteristics of brain metastasis remain largely unknown. This study aimed to investigate the status of brain metastasis with neuroblastoma in South ***: In this retrospective case?based study, 106 patients with stage 4 neuroblastoma from the Department of Pediatric Oncology in Sun Yat?sen University Cancer Center between January 2004 and May 2013 were included. The incidence, risk factors, and survival status of these patients were reviewed and ***: Of the 106 patients, 11(10.4%) developed brain metastasis, accounting for 20.0% of 55 patients with relapse or progression. The age at initial diagnosis of the 11 patients ranged from 2 to 10 years(median 4 years), which was younger than that of the patients without brain metastasis(median 5 years, range 1–10 years, P = 0.073). The male to female ratio of the 11 patients was 8:3, which was not signiicantly diferent from that of the patients with?out brain metastasis(P = 0.86). Patients with brain metastasis had higher lactate dehydrogenase levels than those without brain metastasis, but the diferences were not signiicant(P initial diagnosis to the develo= 0.076). Eight patients died, and 3 patients survived. The median interval from thepment of brain metastasis was 18 months(range 6–32 months). The median survival was 4 months(range 1 day to 29 months) after the diagnosis of brain metastasis. The median interval from the manifestation of brain metastasis to death was 3 months(range 1 day to 11 months).Conclusions: High?risk factors for brain metastasis in cases of neuroblastoma include bone marrow involvement and a younger age at initial diagnosis. Nevertheless, multiple treatment modalities can improve disease?free survival.

Pilot Study on Nanofiltration Combined with Ozonation and GAC for Advanced Drinking Water treatment

A pilot-scale study of advanced drinking water treatment was carried out in test site, and a combination of ozonation, granular activated carbon (GAC) and nanofiltration was employed as the experimental process. By optimizing the operational parameters of ozonation and GAC, a large quantity of micro-pollutants in drinking water was removed, which made the post-positioned nanofiltration operate more reliably. It was evident that nanofiltration shows good performance for removing residual organic matter, meantime partial minerals can also be retained by nanofiltration. Therefore the quality of drinking water can be further improved. In addition, NF membrane fouling and scaling can be solved by concentrate recycling, anti-scalant dosing and chemical rinsing effectively. By GAC adsorption for the residue chlorine and ozone self-decomposition, their oxidation on NF membrane material can be eliminated completely.

Influence of Weave on Fabric Wrinkle Recovery Property before and after Resin treatment

Cotton fabrics with different weaves are designed and the influence of weave on wrinkle recovery property and tensile property is analyzed. Weave type plays a prominent part in determining fabric wrinkle recovery property and tensile property. Weave factor C is in direct relation to wrinkle recovery angle and in inverse relation to tensile property. This trend also exists after resin treatment. 3/1 left-twill fabric shows good wrinkle recovery angle and lest tensile loss after resin treatment.

Giant Cell Tumor： Role of Conservative treatment

Giant cell tumor is aggressive bone tumor. Surgical treatment is considered to be the only effective method of treatment ofthese tumors. The problem of inoperable patients with giant cell tumors is a challenge. A total of 8 patients had giant cell bone tumorsof pelvis and sacrum. 3 patients were treated by bisphosphonates, radiation therapy and embolization of tumor-nutrient arteries. 5patients received denosumab. The efficiency was assessed according to clinical data and CT scan control. Median follow up is 28months. All 8 patients had reduction of pain intensity. treatment with denosumab demonstrated more than 30% tumor regression. Allof the patients are in remission.

Enzymatic surface modification of Kevlar fibers

Horseradish peroxidase catalyzed grafting of acrylamide (AM) onto Kevlar fibers has been studied. The modified fiber has been characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis and the grafting yield. From the SEM micrographs, the surface of the grafted Kevlar fiber is rougher than that of the untreated fiber, and the elemental analysis indicated that the nitrogen content of the treated fibers is higher than that of the untreated fiber. All the results suggested that AM must have been grafted onto the Kevlar surface through HRP-mediated radical initiated grafting reaction. The probably mechanism of HRP catalyzed grafting of AM onto Kevlar surface is proposed.

Identification of Some AOX Compounds Formed in Wool Chlorination Using Model Chemicals

The AOX (adsorbable organic halogens) problem in wool shrinkproofing effluents has attracted more attention in recent years. The probable origins and structures of AOX compounds were proved by the reaction of DCCA with the model substances of different amino acid residues. The GC-MS results indicated that available chlorine could chlorinate the side chain of tyrosine, histidine and trypotophan and generate AOX load in the effluent.

Process of Waste Sludge Facultative Metabolism

Laboratory- scale experiments were conducted to determine new technology of waste sludge facultative metabolism . 10-L laboratory-scale facultative reactors were operated during 24-hour sludge residence time (SRT) and in room temperature . Results show that the organic matter in waste sludge after hydrolysis acidification will be reduced by 75.39%, the removal rate of CODer above 85% . Advantage of the process is hydrolysis-acidification in ambient air temperature as there is no need for facilities to be sealed or heated. In addition, the sludge will be recycled into the wastewater treatment system and finally towards zero-discharge.
