Genetic Diversity of the Palestinian Fig (<i>Ficus carica</i>L.) Collection by Pomological traits and RAPD Markers

Analysis of differentiation (genetic diversity and related relationships) among 22 landrace (Ficus carica L. sativa) and 2 wild form (F. carica L. caprificus) accessions of fig growing under the same environmental conditions in the Palestinian Fig Collection, Til, Nablus, Palestine, using PCR-based Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and pomological markers, revealed considerable genetic diversity. The phenotypic analysis shows that pomological traits were permitted to evaluate morphological variability of fig landraces. The Jaccard similarity coefficient between landraces was determined by cluster analysis using the UPGMA method. Based on the genetic relationships among genotypes as illustrated by the dendrograms, generated from pomological and RAPD data by UPGMA clustering method, the following 12 genotypes: Qaisi, Mwazi, Barqawi, Inaqi, Swadi, Kharobi, Hmadibiadi, Sfari, Khdari, Biadi, Qrawi, and Slati, may be considered as distinct landraces. The remaining genotypes may be considered as synonymous (4) (Hmadi and Hmari, and Ajloni and Adloni), or closely related (6) landraces (Zraqi and Ghzali, Blati and Neami, and Qraee and Khurtmani). The wild fig forms clustered together and may be considered as distinct genotypes. Clustering patterns obtained from the combined (pomological and RAPD) markers had higher discriminatory power to discriminate fig landraces than using either pomological or RAPD markers alone. These results proved the importance of both pomological and RAPD markers to elucidate in part denomination problems and relationships among cultivars. Wide phenotypic and molecular diversity found in fig germplasm indicates a considerable potential for improving this crop.

Detection of Favorable Alleles for Quality- and Yield-related traits in Wheat Using a Backcross Population

Development of wheat varieties with high yield and good quality has been a major objective in wheat breeding.A BC 1 F 2-3 population was used to detect QTLs for wheat quality related traits: SDS-sedimentation value (Ssd),grain protein content (GPC),grain hardness (GH) and 11 mixograph parameters,as well as five agronomic traits: spike length (SL),spikelet number per spike (SPN),grain number per spike (GN),thousand-grain weight (TGW),and plant height (PH).A total of 44 putative QTLs were detected in the present study,31 for quality parameters and 13 for important agronomic traits,including three important major QTLs.One major QTL for Ssd QSsd.saas-1B.1,linked to barc137,explained on average 21.1% of the phenotypic variation in three environments.The allele increasing Ssd at this locus also significantly increased GN.The second locus on chromosome 1B with the linked marker Barc 61 was a major locus for mixograph parameters.It explained 21.3%-32.5%,24.3%-30.6%,30.6%-37% and 20.1%-22.7% of phenotypic variation for mixing tolerance (MT),weakening slope (WS),midline peak time (MPTi) and midline time x =8 value (MTxW),respectively.The third major QTL,explaining above 40% of plant height variation,close to Rht-B 1 on the short arm of chromosome 4BS,co-located with QTL for quality and yield-related traits.

Segregation Correlation of SSR Markers and Flower traits in Aneuploid Tobacco

Few reports have been seen on the segregation of polyploids and on the relationship between the segregation of SSR loci and that of the morphological traits in polyploid progeny. This paper attempted to gain an insight into the segregation of the hexaploid tobacco progeny and to understand the correlation of the segregation of SSR loci with that of the flower morphological traits. The segregation was evaluated with both SSR markers and morphological traits of the flowers. Twenty pairs of SSR primers were screened and a total of 42 SSR loci were identified. Chi-square analysis showed that the segregation ratio of the SSR loci in the aneuploid progeny was between 1:1 and 2:1. Six morphological traits of flowers, including the lengths of the flower and the calyx, the widths of the calyx, the corolla tube and the corolla, and the coloring of the flower, from 180 progeny and 2 progenitor plants, were determined and Chi-square analyzed. All traits were in consistent also with a segregation ratio of 1:1 to 2:1 except the width of the calyx.

Genetic Variation in Growth traits of Toonaciliata Families in Guangdong Province

The height and diameter at breast height were assessed for 173 Toona ciliata families at age 18 months. Analysis of varianceshowed that there were highly significant differences on height and diameter at breast height at Xinhui with 4.60 to 15.08 of Fvalue, indicating the family and replicate could affect the growth. The significant differences were also found on height anddiameter at breast height among provennances and replicates, however there was no significant differences on diameter at breastheight among families at Liangping, indicating the nearly growth speed on diameter at breast height. The coefficient of geneticvariation of height and diameter at breast height were 42.19% and 44.89% at Xinhui while those were 42.10% and 44.23% atLiangping. Heritabilities were were 0.88 for height, 0.90 for diameter at breast height at Xinhui and 0.97 for height, 0.37 fordiameter at breast height at Liangping. Family No. 169, 143, 154, 149 and 153 had significantly slowest growth whereas familyNo. 8, 1, 4, 116 and 39 were the higher growing at Xinhui. Family No. 134, 11, 86, 121 and 43 had significantly slowest growthwhereas family No. 123, 24, 89, 105 and 51 were the higher growing on height at Liangping. Furthermore, the mean values ofheight were nearly in two sites, however the diameter at breast height at Xinhui were bigger than Lianping probably due to theinsect pest.

Evaluation of Pear Varieties for Physiochemical traits Grown under Climatic Conditions of Soon Valley, Pakistan

The study carried out aimed at characterizing the pear cultivars and to explore the specific cultivar most suitable to be commercially grown in Soon valley region. Nine pear varieties (Leconte, Bagugosha, Bartlet pear, Concord, Pear selection-1, Pear Red, Pear White, Kashmiri Nashpati and Kashmiri Nakh) were tested for their physiochemical quality attributes. The observations made during the study revealed that variety Bagugosha scored maximum (7.95, 8.10) in taste and flavor respectively. The same variety produced maximum fruit size (5081 mm2), fruit weight (205 g), soluble solid contents (15%) and total sugars (9.56%). However, fruit yield per plant was maximum (98.80 kg) in Bartlet pear variety and Bagugosha produced fruitweight of 60.20 kg. Titratable acidity was determined maximum (0.44%) in Kashmiri Nakh. Number of seeds were maximum (8.20) in Bartlet Pear as well as in Bgugosha. The exploration of this research study revealed that the Bagugosha is the prime quality cultivar to be suggested for commercial cultivation in Soon valley compared to all nine evaluated varieties.

The factorial structure of self-reported androgen-promoted physiological traits

Androgens make major contributions to average sex differences in anatomy, physiology, and behavior. Despite having established their crucial role in sexual differentiation, much remains to be learned about how androgens coordinate their influences. The present study was undertaken to shed light on androgenic effects on the body using self-reported survey data. We analyzed the ratings provided by over 11,000 college students on the magnitude of eleven traits that previous research has shown to be influenced by testosterone or other androgens. Predictably, the average values for all eleven traits were significantly greater in males than in females. Nevertheless, when data were analyzed separately according to sex of the respondents, some of the traits failed to positively correlate with one another, suggesting that not all an-drogen-influenced traits differentiate in a simple fashion. Factor analysis of these eleven traits by sex reinforced this view by identifying four factors. In men, the primary factor loaded most heavily on: masculine body build, masculine mannerisms, overall physical strength, upper body strength, and lower body strength. The primary factor for women was limited to: upper body strength, lower body strength, and overall physical strength. In both sexes, the primary factor was interpreted as reflecting the influence of perinatal and post-pubertal testosterone exposure. The other three factors may reflect the effects of other androgens (e.g., androstenediol), or the influence of female hormones such as estradiol. Findings were discussed in terms of future use of self-reported physiological measures for assessing androgenic effects on the human body.

Sub-Grouping Healthy Subjects’ Sensitivity to Pain and Its Relationship to Personality traits: Results of a Cluster Analysis

Objective: Individual differences in the sensitivity to pain and the factors that may contribute to these differences are well studied. Nevertheless, there is no single test that can reliably classify subjects as being sensitive or insensitive to pain. Methods: In the present study, hierarchical clustering and K-means cluster analysis was used to identify subgroups among 191 healthy subjects (105 females, 86 males) according to their sensitivity to pain. Group determination was based on the subjects’ response to experimental noxious stimuli of heat (pain intensity), cold (cold pain threshold, tolerance, and intensity), and conditioned pain modulation (CPM, tested by co-administering repeated short painful heat stimuli and a conditioning tonic cold pain stimulation). In addition, in order to determine if the subjects in these subgroups differed on personality traits scores on Cloninger’s Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ, outcome measure) for the three dimensions of personality: Novelty Seeking (NS);Harm Avoidance (HA);and Reward Dependence (RD) were calculated. Results: Based on pain scores, subjects were grouped as low pain (57%) with a low level of sensitivity in pain parameters, or high pain (43%) cluster members. The high pain had significant higher scores of HA (p = 0.05) and RD (p = 0.05) than the low pain group. Conclusions: This method of sub-grouping may be useful for identifying the mechanisms underlying individual variability in the sensitivity to pain and may point to groups at risk for experiencing high levels of clinical pain.

Personality traits and Cognitive Determinants——An Empirical Investigation of the Use of Smartphone Security Measures

In the last years, increasing smartphones’ capabilities have caused a paradigm shift in the way of users’ view and using mobile devices. Although researchers have started to focus on behavioral models to explain and predict human behavior, there is limited empirical research about the influence of smartphone users’ individual differences on the usage of security measures. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of individual differences on cognitive determinants of behavioral intention to use security measures. Individual differences are measured by the Five-Factor Model;cognitive determinants of behavioral intention are adapted from the validated behavioral models theory of planned behavior and technology acceptance model. An explorative, quantitative survey of 435 smartphone users is served as data basis. The results suggest that multiple facets of smartphone user’s personalities significantly affect the cognitive determinants, which indicate the behavioral intention to use security measures. From these findings, practical and theoretical implications for companies, organizations, and researchers are derived and discussed.

The Relationship Between Learners’Personality traits and EFL Learning

In the process of foreign language learning, many factors interact to influence the learners’ learning achievement, including teaching, the learner, and the context, among which the individual difference attracted many researchers’ attention. They attempted to find out the relationship between these individual differences, especially personality traits and the learner’s foreign language learning achievements. However, the results and findings of the researches are sometimes contradictory and not always unquestionable. This research is designed for verifying the results of other studies and finding out the relationship between personality traits and EFL learning in the Chinese context, thereby making some contributions to the EFL teaching and learning. This thesis consists of five parts. The first part is a brief introduction to the research. In the second part, some theories on personality are surveyed first, and some researches are reviewed. Part Three presents the method of the research, including a description of the research methodology, subjects, and data-collecting procedures. Part Four reports the results and the data obtained in the research. In the last part, the results of the present research are compared with those of other researches, the implications and limitations of the research are discussed, and some suggestions for further studies are also put forward.

Developmental stages and quality traits of giant African land snails [<i>Archachatina marginata</i>(swainson)] eggs

Sixty sexually mature purebred black-skinned Archachatina marginata snails with weight ranging from 120.50 g to 135.70 g were used to generate eggs in this study. The eggs collected were incubated in a chamber filled with loamy soil for appropriate observation and assessment (cracking at four days intervals to check snailet’s development). Results obtained from the study showed that at laying snail egg weights ranged from 1.54 - 2.45 g (mean of 2.00 g). The egg lengths and widths ranged from 13.50 - 16.90 mm (mean of 15.20 mm) and 10.00 - 12.70 mm (mean of 11.40 mm) respectively. The results also revealed that at laying (day one) the egg content was translucent or clear (blank) when observed with light from a powered microscope. Observation of eggs on day four showed the formation of embryo with a semi-transparent cup attached to a long string body. On day 12, some specific organs of the snailet had developed, and there was a reduction in the liquid content. On day 28, the snailet was fully formed, but the shell still contained very small volume of liquid. The snailet hatched on day 29.
