Exploring influential factors and endogeneity of traffic flow of different lanes on urban freeways using Bayesian multivariate spatial models

The traffic flow pertinent modelling is essential for distinct strategy formulations.However,the present literature illustrated some needed improvements for such models,especially those related to lane-specific flow.Given such context,this study aims to bridge the research gap by generating regression models to investigate influential factors for traffic flow based on the data collected from one multilane freeway.With the Full Bayesian specification,the hierarchical models were built by accounting for three types of random effects:the structured and unstructured spatial effects,and the one addressing the multivariate heterogeneity across multiple lanes.The endogenous relationship of traffic flow of adjacent lanes was also explored by utilizing the capability of multivariate correlation structure for simultaneous estimation of lane flow.The model estimates revealed the presence of endogeneity with statistical significance for the flow of neighbouring lanes for both directions of travel.The impact of flow was not only limited to the adjacent lanes but also to non-adjacent lanes.The multivariate specification also confirmed interdependency for lane flows.Compared to conventional approaches,the more accurate model estimation in the study indicates the advantage of incorporating the various correlation structures in the models.

This paper investigates traffic flow of connected and automated vehicles at lane drop on two-lane highway. We evaluate and compare performance of an optimization-based control algorithm(OCA) with that of a heuristic rules-based algorithm(HRA). In the OCA, the average speed of each vehicle is maximized. In the HRA, virtual vehicle and restriction of the command acceleration caused by the virtual vehicle are introduced. It is found that(i) capacity under the HRA(denoted as C_(H)) is smaller than capacity under the OCA;(ii) the travel delay is always smaller under the OCA, but driving is always much more comfortable under the HRA;(iii) when the inflow rate is smaller than C_(H), the HRA outperforms the OCA with respect to the fuel consumption and the monetary cost;(iv) when the inflow rate is larger than C_(H), the HRA initially performs better with respect to the fuel consumption and the monetary cost, but the OCA would become better after certain time. The spatiotemporal pattern and speed profile of traffic flow are presented, which explains the reason underlying the different performance. The study is expected to help for better understanding of the two different types of algorithm.

In this paper,we describe a numerical technique for the solution of macroscopic traffic flow models on networks of roads.On individual roads,we consider the standard Lighthill-Whitham-Richards model which is discretized using the discontinuous Galerkin method along with suitable limiters.To solve traffic flows on networks,we construct suitable numerical fluxes at junctions based on preferences of the drivers.We prove basic properties of the constructed numerical flux and the resulting scheme and present numerical experiments,including a junction with complicated traffic light patterns with multiple phases.Differences with the approach to numerical fluxes at junctions fromČanićet al.(J Sci Comput 63:233-255,2015)are discussed and demonstrated numerically on a simple network.

Prompt and accurate traffic flow forecasting is a key foundation of urban traffic management.However,the flows in different areas and feature channels(inflow/outflow)may correspond to different degrees of importance in forecasting flows.Many forecasting models inadequately consider this heterogeneity,resulting in decreased predictive accuracy.To overcome this problem,an attention-based hybrid spatiotemporal residual model assisted by spatial and channel information is proposed in this study.By assigning different weights(attention levels)to different regions,the spatial attention module selects relatively important locations from all inputs in the modeling process.Similarly,the channel attention module selects relatively important channels from the multichannel feature map in the modeling process by assigning different weights.The proposed model provides effective selection and attention results for key areas and channels,respectively,during the forecasting process,thereby decreasing the computational overhead and increasing the accuracy.In the case involving Beijing,the proposed model exhibits a 3.7%lower prediction error,and its runtime is 60.9%less the model without attention,indicating that the spatial and channel attention modules are instrumental in increasing the forecasting efficiency.Moreover,in the case involving Shanghai,the proposed model outperforms other models in terms of generalizability and practicality.

Emergency supplies scheduling needs to consider the state of the demanders,and reasonably scheduling and resource allocation are the heart of efficient rescue.Taking rescue time,scheduling cost and demanders’satisfac-tion as goals,in this paper,an emergency supplies scheduling model based on multi-objective optimization was proposed to provide a wealth of decision-making information.Then four multi-objective optimization algorithms are employed to obtain the optimal set of scheduling models.In addition,we design the minimum time cost model and the shortest route cost model by considering the change of the road network status.The extensive simulation experiments are conducted on a real urban traffic dataset.The experimental results show that the two cost models can serve different scheduling needs and provide efficient scheduling for emergency supplies.

As the number of automobiles continues to increase year after year,the associated problem of traffic congestion has become a serious societal issue.Initiatives to mitigate this problem have considered methods for optimizing traffic volumes in wide-area road networks,and traffic-flow simulation has become a focus of interest as a technique for advance characterization of such strategies.Classes of models commonly used for traffic-flow simulations include microscopic models based on discrete vehicle representations,macroscopic models that describe entire traffic-flow systems in terms of average vehicle densities and velocities,and mesoscopic models and hybrid(or multiscale)models incorporating both microscopic and macroscopic features.Because traffic-flow simulations are designed to model traffic systems under a variety of conditions,their underlyingmodelsmust be capable of rapidly capturing the consequences of minor variations in operating environments.In other words,the computation speed of macroscopic models and the precise representation of microscopic models are needed simultaneously.Thus,in this study we propose a multiscale model that combines a microscopic model—for detailed analysis of subregions containing traffic congestion bottlenecks or other localized phenomena of interest-with a macroscopic model enabling simulation of wide target areas at a modest computational cost.In addition,to ensure analytical stability with robustness in the presence of discontinuities,we discretize our macroscopic model using a discontinuous Galerkin finite element method(DGFEM),while to conjoin microscopic and macroscopic models,we use a generating/absorbing sponge layer,a technique widely used for numerical analysis of long-wavelength phenomena in shallow water,to enable traffic-flow simulations with stable input and output regions.

This paper presents a cellular automaton traffic flow model with an open boundary condition to describe the traffic flow at a roundabout crossing with an inner roundabout lane and an outer roundabout lane. The simulation results show that the boundary condition, bottlenecks and the self-organization affect the traffic flow at the roundabout crossing. Because of the effect of bottlenecks, jams easily appear on the inner roundabout lane. To improve the capacity of the roundabout system, proper values of the enter probability α and the out probability βcan be chosen.

With the development of traffic systems, some issues such as traffic jams become more and more serious. Efficient traffic flow theory is needed to guide the overall controlling, organizing and management of traffic systems. On the basis of the cellular automata model and the traffic flow model with look-ahead potential, a new cellular automata traffic flow model with negative exponential weighted look-ahead potential is presented in this paper. By introducing the negative exponential weighting coefficient into the look-ahead potential and endowing the potential of vehicles closer to the driver with a greater coefficient, the modeling process is more suitable for the driver’s random decision-making process which is based on the traffic environment that the driver is facing. The fundamental diagrams for different weighting parameters are obtained by using numerical simulations which show that the negative exponential weighting coefficient has an obvious effect on high density traffic flux. The complex high density non-linear traffic behavior is also reproduced by numerical simulations.

To further investigate car-following behaviors in the cooperative adaptive cruise control（CACC） strategy,a comprehensive control system which can handle three traffic conditions to guarantee driving efficiency and safety is designed by using three CACC models.In this control system,some vital comprehensive information,such as multiple preceding cars’ speed differences and headway,variable safety distance（VSD） and time-delay effect on the traffic current and the jamming transition have been investigated via analytical or numerical methods.Local and string stability criterion for the velocity control（VC） model and gap control（GC） model are derived via linear stability theory.Numerical simulations are conducted to study the performance of the simulated traffic flow.The simulation results show that the VC model and GC model can improve driving efficiency and suppress traffic congestion.
