Family characteristics on self-reported toothache among Indonesian children aged 12-14 years

Objective： toothache was reported as a reason for school absenteeism, sleeping difficulties, loss of appetite, and seeking dental treatment among children. These represented some impacts of dental problems on health, quality of life, and socioeconomic problems. The aims of this study were to describe the prevalence of toothache among 12-14-year-old children in Indonesia and their family characteristics and to analyze the associations of family characteristics on the toothache. Methods： We analyzed the data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey 5 in 2014-2015. A total of 2,377 children aged 12-14 years were included in this survey. This age is the early stage of eruption of all permanent teeth. Children were asked about their experience on toothache in the last 4 weeks as a dependent variable. The independent variables were the family socioeconomic characteristics including father＇s and mother＇s highest educational level, family income, and the number of children in the family. A logistic regression was applied to analyze the relationship of family characteristics with toothache experience of children. Results： toothache experience was reported from 13.9% of the respondents. Descriptive statistics showed that higher percentages of toothache were experienced by male children and children from family with lower parental education and economic position as well as from bigger family. However, logistic regression showed that only the number of children in the family had a statistically positive association with self-reported toothache of the children. Children living in the family with more than four children were more likely reported toothache than living in the family with one or two children （P=0.012; odds ratio [OR] = 1.53）. Children living with more siblings may experience less attention from their parents on oral health hygiene. Poor oral health habits could result in dental pain. Although pain of dental origin is the most common orofacial pain, other non-odontogenic pains can af-fect the orofacial region and occasionally mimic den-tal pain. These non-odontogenic pains may pose a diagnostic dilemma for the dental practitioner who routinely diagnoses and treats dental pain. Knowledge of the various non-odontogenic pains will ultimately prevent misdiagnosis and the delivery of incorrect and sometimes irreversible and invasive procedures to patients. The purpose of this article is to review the clinical presentations of the various types of non-odontogenic pains which may be mistaken as dental pain: myofascial, cardiac, sinus, neurovascular, neuropathic, neoplastic and psychogenic pain.

Purpose To explore the feasibility of treating toothache with the acupoints in Liver Meridian. Method According to syndrome differentiation, toothache was divided into pathogenic wind-fire type and deficiency-fire type. Twenty patients were treated by needling Tai-chong (LR 3) o! the affected side. Reducing manipulation was performed for toothache due to pathogenic windfire while early-reducing-late-tonifying was performed for toothache due to deficiency-fire type. Results The pain disappearance occurred in 14 cases, improved in 5 cases and no effect in one case. Conclusion Needling Tai-chong( LR 3) was effective for toothache.

Objective To observe the clinical therapeutic efficacy of acupuncture in trea ng toothache. Methods Acupuncture was carried out at Nǚxī（女膝 EX）,Tàichōng（太冲 LR 3）,Nèi ng（内庭 ST 44）,Tàixī（太溪 KI 3）,Hégǔ（合谷 LI 4）,Yángxī（阳溪 LI 5） and other acupoints for the 864 patients with toothache,and the treatment was given once a day. Results Six hundred and eighty-two pa ents were healed,which accounted for 78.9%,180 pa ents were improved,which accounted for 20.8%,two patients were invalid,which accounted for 0.3%. Conclusion The clinical therapeu c effi cacy of acupuncture in trea ng toothache is sa sfactory.

Background: Self-medication is the inappropriate use of drugs to treat self-diagnosed disorders or symptoms. Even though Self-medication has benefits as it enhances better use of clinical skills and increases access to medication;it is also associated with risks such as adverse drug reactions and antibiotics resistance. Objectives: To determine prevalence of self-medication practices among dental out-patients, triggering factors that influence self-medication practice and common source of drugs. Materials and methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the Clinic of the Department of Preventive Dentistry, Lagos University Teaching Hospital over a period of 6 months using self-administered questionnaires adapted from previous studies. Data obtained was analysed and expressed as frequencies and percentages. Test of associations was done using chi-square (p Results: Age of respondents ranged from 16 to 78 years (32.24 ± 13.47). M:F was 1:1. Prevalence of self-medication was 45.5%;toothache was the most prevalent reason for self-medication (71%). The frequently used drugs for self-medication were analgesics (65%) while the most common source for the drugs was the pharmacy (60%). Educational status (X2 = 12.85, P 2 = 6.42, P 2 = 10.38, P Conclusion: This study revealed high prevalence of self-medication with toothache as the predominant trigger and pharmacy, the most common source.
