We report the modulation of epsilon-near-zero(ENZ)wavelength and enhanced third-order nonlinearity in indium tin oxide(ITO)/Au multilayer *** samples consisting of five-layer 40 nm ITO films spaced by four-layer ultrathin Au films of different thickness,i.e.,ITO(40 nm)/[Au(x)/ITO(40 nm)]4,were prepared by magnetron sputtering at room *** ENZ wavelength in the multilayer films is theoretically calculated and experimentally *** nonlinear refractive index and nonlinear absorption coefficient of the samples of x=0,2,3,4 nm were determined using the Z-scan method at a wavelength of 1.064μ*** large nonlinear refractive index n2=1.12×10^(−13) m^(2)=W and nonlinear absorption coefficient β=−1.78×10^(−7) m=W in the sample of x=4 nm are both four times larger than those in the single-layer ITO *** large optical nonlinearity due to the ENZ enhancement and carrier concentration is *** results indicate that the ITO/Au multilayer films are promising for advanced all-optical devices.

Recently,hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN)has become a promising nanophotonic platform for on-chip information devices due to the practicability in generating optically stable,ultra-bright quantum *** an integrated information-processing chip,high optical nonlinearity is indispensable for various fundamental functionalities,such as all-optical modulation,high order harmonic generation,optical switching and so *** we study the third-order optical nonlinearity of free-standing h-BN thin films,which is an ideal platform for on-chip integration and device formation without the need of *** films were synthesized by a solution-based method with abundant functional groups enabling high third-order optical *** the highly inert pristine h-BN films synthesized by conventional methods,the free-standing h-BN films could be locally oxidized upon tailored femtosecond laser irradiation,which further enhances the third-order nonlinearity,especially the nonlinear refraction index,by more than 20 *** combination of the free-standing h-BN films with laser activation and patterning capability establishes a new promising platform for high performance on-chip photonic devices with modifiable optical performance.

Enhancement of absorptive optical nonlinearity of asymmetrically coupled quantum well structures

The third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) of asymmetrically coupled quantum well (ACQW) structure is calculated by employing a V-type three-level model. The efficiency of absorptive optical nonlinearity, which we define as the ratio of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) to the linear absorptive coefficient α0, is analysed for different electronic coherence oscillation frequencies. We show that the efficiency is enhanced with the increase of the electronic coherence oscillation frequency between the two wells but is degenerated as that of a single quantum well when the electronic coherence oscillation frequency is zero. Compared with single quantum well, the ACQW designed has the property of nonlinear absorption and dispersion depending strongly on the external electric field along the growth direction. We predict that ACQW structures can provide both high efficiency limiters and controllable optical Kerr switch in future communication systems.

The input pulse of the laser PEARL with energy of 18 J and pulse duration of about 60 fs was compressed to 10 fs after passage through a 4-mm-thick KDP crystal and reflection at two chirped mirrors with sum dispersion of-200 fs^(2).The experiments were performed for the B-integral values from 5 to 19 without visible damage to the optical elements,which indicates that small-scale self-focusing is not a significant *** was shown that,by virtue of the low dispersion of the group velocity,the KDP crystal has some advantages over silica:a larger pulse compression coefficient,especially at a small value of the B-integral(B=5,...,9),lower absolute values of chirped mirror dispersion,and also a possibility to control the magnitude of nonlinearity and dispersion by changing crystal orientation.

The nonlinear optical properties of Al-doped nc-Si-SiO2 composite films have been investigated using the time-resolved four-wave mixing technique with a femtosecond laser. The off-resonant third-order nonlinear susceptibility is observed to be 1.0 × 10-10 esu at 800nm. The relaxation time of the optical nonlinearity in the films is as short as 60fs. The optical nonlinearity is enhanced due to the quantum confinement of electrons in Si nanocrystals embedded in the SiO2 films. The enhanced optical nonlinearity does not originate from Al dopant because there are no Al clusters in the films.

A supercontinuum white laser with ultrabroad bandwidth,intense pulse energy,and high spectral flatness can be accomplished via synergic action of third-order nonlinearity(3rd-NL)and second-order *** this work,we employ an intense Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser with a pulse duration of 50 fs and pulse energy up to 4 mJ to ignite the supercontinuum white ***,we use water instead of the usual solid materials as the 3rd-NL medium exhibiting both strong self-phase modulation and stimulated Raman scattering effect to create a supercontinuum laser with significantly broadened bandwidth and avoid laser damage and *** the supercontinuum laser is injected into a water-embedded chirped periodically poled lithium niobate crystal that enables broadband and high-efficiency second-harmonic *** output white laser has a 10 dB bandwidth encompassing 413 to 907 nm,more than one octave,and a pulse energy of 0.6 *** methodology would open up an efficient route to creating a long-lived,high-stability,and inexpensive white laser with intense pulse energy,high spectral flatness,and ultrabroad bandwidth for application to various areas of basic science and high technology.
