Variation of photosynthesis,secondary metabolites and antioxidant activities in third generation of spaceflight-induced Salvia miltiorrhiza

Objective: Spaceflight has long been perceived as an effective way to improve the quantity and quality of plants with wide applications. In order to obtain stable and inheritable descendants of spaceflightinduced Salvia miltiorrhiza lines, we investigated and analyzed four lines m16, m50, m51, m57(three individuals of each line) and the ground control(three individuals) of the third generation of spaceflight-induced S. miltiorrhiza from primary/secondary metabolism and antioxidative abilities.Methods: A portable photosynthesis system(Li-6400) with red/blue LED light source was used to perform the photosynthetic characteristics to evaluate their primary productivity. The secondary metabolites(phenolic acids, tanshinones, total phenolics and flavonoids) and antioxidant activity of roots were analyzed to assess their quality.Results: Compared with control, line m16 presented weak photosynthetic ability, but high apparent quantum yield(AQY), higher contents of secondary metabolites, and stronger antioxidative abilities.Line m57 had a strong gas exchange ability, relatively higher secondary metabolites contents, and ascending antioxidative abilities. Lines m50 and m51 were in the middle level of lines m16 and m57.The principal component analysis for all the original data revealed three components including a rootrelated index, a leaf-related index, and a CO_(2) response parameter could be used to distinguish spaceflight-induced S. miltiorrhiza lines.Conclusion: Line m57 could be an appropriate material for the investigation of targeted breeding towards high production, and line m16 could be used to identify essential genes and unravel sophisticated pathways underlying the secondary metabolisms.

A review of third generation SiC fibers and SiC_f/SiC composites

Compared with the first and second generations SiC fibers, the third generation SiC fibers have obvious improvement in heat-resistance, oxidation-resistance and creep-resistance, which promote the development of SiCf/SiC composite materials. Therefore, the third generation SiC fibers have more advantages and broader prospects in engineering applications. In this paper, the fabrication and properties of the third generation SiC fibers are compared and discussed. The preparation processes of the third generation SiC fibers reinforced SiC matrix composites and their application in aeroengine and nuclear energy fields are summarized, while their future development is prospected as well.

We think that the current classification of solar cells is not reasonable.We suggest that the first generations should be defined as element（silicon）solar cells,including monocrystalline,multicrystalline,microcrystalline,nanocrystalline,amorphous Si cells;the second generations should be defined as compound solar cells,including CdTe,CIGS,GaAs,CZTSSe cells,etc;the third generations should be hybrid（composite）solar cells,including dye-sensitized cells,perovskite cells,organic cells,quantum dot cells,etc.As two typical examples,perovskite solar cells and dye-sensitized solar cells are introduced.Dye-sensitized solar cell（DSSC）have become one of the typical representatives of the third generation solar cells owing to its low cost,easy preparation,high efficiency and environment benignity.Focusing on the PV technology golden triangle issues:efficiency,cost and stability,the scientists have devoted a great deal of endeavor since 1991.Ten important processes of DSSCs are introduced and emphasized.Lead halide amine perovskite solar cells（PSCs）have been dominant photovoltaic research topic in this decade owing to their low cost,easy preparation,and higher efficiency compared with other photovoltaic devices,as well as their unique features of perovskite.The PSCs have obtained a great progress with power conversion efficiency（PCE）of 3.8%in 2009 to more than 22%at present,and become the research hotspots of the third generation solar cells.Ten important processes of PSCs are introduced and emphasized.

＜正＞In ancient China,it would take hundreds of years to establish a new poetic form,but after 1911,when the Ch’ing Dynasty was overthrown,a drastic change took place in poetic form from the classical style of writing to writing in the vernacular,from regulated verse to free verse,as a result of dramatic changes involving people’s concepts or viewpoints as well as the open-door policy China had to take.The introduction of foreign poetries to China was also an important factor in the radical changes from traditional Chinese poetry.The development of modern transportation and communications accelerated all kinds of cultural exchanges with foreign countries,including the literary exchanges with the United States.The 20th century witnesses two upsurges in introducing foreign literatures into China around the 1920s and since the 1970s,both of which provided Chinese and American poets with good chances for them to compare notes on poetry.This essay recalls the dialogues between Chinese and American poets in the 20th century and in the new century.It consists of five parts:Ⅰ.Introduction;Ⅱ.The First Upsurge in the 1920s;Ⅲ.Communication between Chinese and American Poets in the 1930s and 1940s;Ⅳ.The Second Upsurge since the 1970s;andⅤ.The dialogues between Chinese and American poets in the new century.（Here in this book only the 1st, 3rd and 4th chapters are selected for publication just because of the limited space of this book for such a gigantic essay of up to 44 pages in A4 size.）

＜正＞ Hot Carrier solar cells have long been recognized as an attractive contender in the search for high efficiency photovoltaic devices but their fabrication requires solution of two important material challenges: finding materials with drastically reduced carrier cooling rates and realization of selective energy contacts to extract the photogenerated carriers. This paper is concerned with the problem of absorber phononic engineering to reduce carrier cooling rates. The physics of carrier cooling is explored and experimental data of other authors are discussed with a view to assessing the potential of state-of-the art nanostructured materials for PV conversion. A tentative initial calculation based on the thermalisation in these nanostructures and assuming all other aspects as ideal, gives 54% efficiency at 2500suns as compared to 54% for no thermalisation at all. Phononic band gap engineering to further reduce carrier cooling or bring down the threshold concentration is discussed.
