Flavonoids such as baohuoside I and icaritin are the major active compounds in Epimedii Folium(EF)and possess excellent therapeutic effects on various ***,in 2022,icaritin soft capsules were approved to reach the market for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)by National Medical Products Administration(NMPA)of ***,recent studies demonstrate that icaritin can serve as immune-modulating agent to exert anti-tumor ***,both production efficiency and clinical applications of epimedium flavonoids have been restrained because of their low content,poor bioavailability,and unfavorable in vivo delivery ***,various strategies,including enzyme engineering and nanotechnology,have been developed to increase productivity and activity,improve delivery efficiency,and enhance therapeutic effects of epimedium *** this review,the structure-activity relationship of epimedium flavonoids is ***,enzymatic engineering strategies for increasing the productivity of highly active baohuoside I and icaritin are *** nanomedicines for overcoming in vivo delivery barriers and improving therapeutic effects of various diseases are ***,the challenges and an outlook on clinical translation of epimedium flavonoids are proposed.

Bioactive compounds of sea cucumbers and their therapeutic effects

Abstract Sea cucumbers belong to the Class Holothuroidea of marine invertebrates. They are commercially valuable and prized as a food and folk medicine in Asia. Nutritionally, sea cucumbers have an impressive profile of valuable nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and amino acids. A number of unique biological and pharmacological activities/properties, including anticancer, anticoagulant/antithrombotic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antihyperlipidemic, antihyperglycemic, anti-inflammatory, antihypertension and radioprotective, have been ascribed to various compounds isolated from sea cucumbers. The therapeutic properties and medicinal benefits of sea cucumbers can be linked to the presence of a wide array ofbioactives, especially triterpene glycosides, acid mucopolysaccharide, sphingoid bases, glycolipids, fucosylated chondroitin sulfate, polysaccharides, phospholipids, cerebrosides, phosphatidylcholines, and other extracts and hydrolysates. This review highlights the valuable bioactive components as well as the multiple therapeutic properties of sea cucumbers with a view to exploring their potential uses as functional foods and a natural source of new multifunctional drugs.

Verification of the Physiological therapeutic effects of Harvesting Activities in a Patient with Moderate Alzheimer’s Disease with Long-Term Agricultural Experience

Background: Harvesting activities have proven effective in reducing stress in patients with dementia. At a psychiatric hospital, occupational therapists (OT) made patients with dementia perform vegetable harvesting activities as a part of their treatment. The patients became calmer and began to smile not only after but also before and during harvesting activity. Therefore, this study aimed to measure autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses over time in a female patient in her 80s with moderate Alzheimer’s disease (AD) who had experience in farming when performing harvesting activities. Additionally, this study aimed to consider factors associated with changes in ANS responses over time and to verify the physiological therapeutic effects of harvesting activities. Methods: An OT with more than 10 years of experience and a good relationship with the patient conducted one-on-one sessions with the patient. Harvesting activity was performed in a courtyard with trees. The patient harvested lettuce (three lettuce plants) grown in a planter while sitting on a chair. Additionally, the planter was set up on a desk. ANS responses were measured over time from before to after the activity for different events at six time periods. Changes in the patient’s ANS responses were assessed during each period. Results: With the involvement of environmental factors and OT during harvesting activities, parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity significantly increased. This may lead to improved mental stability. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that implementing harvesting activities may have a positive effect on the PNS in patients with AD with long-term agricultural experience. However, further studies with a larger sample size and multidimensional evaluations are needed.

Direct anastomosis of contralateral C_7 nerve root transfer with affected-side inferior trunk for repair of brachial plexus avulsion injury

AIM： To observe the effect of direct anastomosis of contralateral C7 nerve root transferred through prespina route with affected-side infedor trunk for repair of brachial plexus avulsion injury, and investigate its feasibility. METHODS ： Two male patients, with the age of 24 and 41 years respectively, were retrieved. When admitted to the hospital, they were diagnosed as brachial plexus avulsion injury. They subjected the operation in the 252 Hospital of Chinese PLA in March 2006 and May 2006 respectively. The proximal end of contralateral C7 nerve root was dissociated to nerve root pore and the distal end was dissociated to anterior and posterior divisions of middle trunk. The injured C7 nerve root was widely dissociated to inferior trunk, medial cord, ulnar nerve and medial head of median nerve. When elbow and shoulder joints were in flexion, the injured C7 nerve root was directly anastomosed with contralateral C7 nerve root in the gap between affected-side cervical vagina vasorum and esophagus with no tensions. RESULTS： During 3 to 5 hours of operation, little hemorrhage was found, nerves were not used for connection. Dyspnea, hoarse voice and other complications did not appear, either. In the postoperative 7^th to 8^th months, electromyogram examination showed that the growth velocity of anastomosed nerve was normal. CONCLUSION ： Direct anastomosis of contralateral C7 nerve root transferred through prespinal route with affected-side inferior trunk can be used for repair of brachial plexus avulsion injury with satisfying therapeutic effects.

Electrochemotherapy for rat implanted liver tumour

The most common interventional therapies for liver cancer at present include transcatheter hepatic arterial chemoembolization （TACE）, percutaneous ethanol injection and radiofrequency ablation, but all these therapies have some intrinsic disadvantages. Since the advent of electrochemotherapy （EChT）, it has been accepted as a safe and effective therapy for malignant tumors There are only a few experimental studies reporting the use of EChT in the treatment of liver cancer in the foreign medical literature. However, there have been some clinical studies, and even fewer reports of experimental studies on EChT for liver cancer in China. We used a rat implanted liver cancer animal model to monitor changes in tumour size, tumour necrosis, cellular apoptosis, expression of peripheral immunological markers （IL-2, slL-2R, IL-6 and TNF-α） and survival.
