A preliminary study on ecological waterdemand estimation in the arid region─A case in the qaidam basin

The paper emphasized the relationship between environment and water taking ecological demand water (EWD) in the qaidam basin─an inner basin in northwestern China, as a key issue to discuss based on landscape umpping. First of all. the spatial heterogeneity of ecosystem can be reflected well by landscape pattern; secondly, landscape patterns adjust closely with environmental changes; finally, water condition is the key ecological factor for landscape pattern in the arid *** landsat TM image of 1:100,000 on September 22, 1996 were calibrated with topographical map of the same scale, and then landscape patterns were interpreted and mapped. As a result the qaidam basin could be divided into 14 main types, including 67 subtypes. Concerning the characteristics of the EWD of each sub-type, the EWD in the whole basin could be estimated according to the following formula:V= (E - P ) * S = r (KEo - P ) * S Where, V is the ecological demand for Water (m3), E is the evaporation potential on terrestrial surface (m). P is the precipitation in landscape unit (m), S is the area of landscape unit (m2), Eo is the evaporation potential on water surface (m), K is the evaporation coefficient, and r is the *** to the results, the ecological demand for water of desert vegetation is about 9,65×108m3, while it is about 24.48×108m3 for the lake in the inner basin. Therefore, the total EWD occupies approximately 65.7％ of the total water resources in the basin. In conclusion, the quantitative method based on landscape ecological mapping is feasible, which attentively transfers the 'point'information to the 'area'. However, the preliminary results are expccted to improve by further field delta.

Study on optimization of the population system and its coordination with natural resources and environment in the qaidam basin

The population system is the only subsystem tha has charecteristic of subjectivity in theregional PRED system. Influenced by the particular status quo of natural resources and environmentconditions, the population subsystem of the qaidam basin is very different from those of otherregions'. Based on the on-the-spot investigation to the qaidam basin in July 1997, the authors of thispaper sum up several characters of the population subsystem of the basin. (1) Population mainlyconsisting of the big volume of immigrants and floating population increases very fast. (2) With highpopulation mobility there was great discrepany between the actual number of population (aggregatepopulation) and the statidtical population. (3) Degree of urbanization is very high, and employmentconcentrates mainly on the industrial and teftiary industrial sectors. (4) Sex ratio remains veryunbalanced, especially in the youth group of population which exerts high pressure on employmentand training because of the young age structure. (5) Population quality is relatively high as a wholeWhile educahonal level characterizes the undeveloped regions. In order to predict the futurepopulation of the basin. according to the characters of population system, this paper puts forward away called dividing-steps-forecast-sum to do the prediction till 2050, use both modeling forecastingmethod and empirical evaluation. The results indicated that the total population of the basin whllreach 1 .28 million in 2050. Among them, the natural increment and immigrant and floating incrementoccupy 34.99% and 60.86%, respectively, with another 4.13% of special population. In terms ofcharactedstics of population and predicted results as well as the status quo of natural resources andenvironment this paper suggests several thoughts to optimize and adjust the population system of theqaidam basin. They are, firsuy, to control the number of population as well as improve thepopulation quality, and secondly, to reghate the floating

Standardization of Qilian Juniper ring-width series in the eastern margin of the qaidam basin

Standardization is one of the important procedures in dendroclimatology. We used abundant Qilian juniper （Sabina przewalskii Kom.） tree-ring samples from the eastern margin of the qaidam basin to develop a new standardization method, i.e. total growth curve （TGC）. The samples that contained the complete pith and reached to the growing culmination around the 40th-60th year were used to fit TGC, and the generalized negative exponential function was used to fit the curve. Usually, most cores cannot reach the arboreal pith for some reasons and it is difficult to determine the arboreal cambial age. The empirical model of initial radial growth （IRG） was employed to estimate the number of rings missing from the pith by the same data and IRG model explained 90.9% of the variance. When developing the chronology, the cambial ages of cores that contained the complete pith were regarded as beginning from the first year and others were determined by the numbers of missing and included rings in the core. Standardization was accomplished by dividing each tree-ring series by corresponding TGC. The chronologies developed by TGC can retain more low-frequency variational information and TGC helps to develop more reliable tree-ring width chronology.

Distribution characteristics of lipids from salt sediments in qaidam basin and their astrobiological significance

On Earth,salt environments are the most relevant analogues to Martian salt deposits with regard to the search for preserved *** this study,we analyzed the distribution of lipids in salt samples from Dalangtan and Qarhan in the qaidam basin,which is the most important area to carry out analog research of Mars in ***,we compared the lipids distribution results with that from other typical Martian analog sites such as the Atacama *** samples in the qaidam basin are enriched with fatty acid compounds,including normal fatty acids,unsaturated fatty acids,branched fatty acids,and acyclic isoprene *** addtion,glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers(GDGTs)and archaeol compounds were also detected in these salt *** with the hypersaline samples,the clay samples not only have higher abuandance of fatty acids,GDGTs and archaeol compounds,but also a more diversed lipids *** a few lipids were detected in the pure-saline samples,such as archaeol *** clues suggest that content of salt minerals is the major factor affecting the distribution of *** study provides an analogy for detecting and evaluating the traces of life that may exist on Mars.

In this study the plants species and their distribution and groundwater was investigated in the qaidam basin, northeastern section of the Plateau of Tibet,and the relation between these plants and the groundwater was illustrated through the field *** results showed that the major plant species are deserta,xerophyte and halophyte in the study area,including Ephedra equisetina Bunge,arbor,Carex,shorten Phragmites australis,and Apocynum venetum *** Ephedra equisetina Bunge is distributed in groundwater recharge area in piedmont area,and Carex,shorten Phragmites australis,and Apocynum venetum *** distributed in the groundwater discharge area in alluvial *** plant species and distribution exhibit a strip-shaped appearance from the top to the bottom of alluvial *** results also illustrated that the major dominant factors controlling them are the moisture and *** species of Ephedra equisetina Bunge is mainly controlled under the moisture which is from the vadose zone and independent- *** species of Ephedra equisetina Bunge,arbor, Carex,Phragmites australis and Apocynum venetum *** closely related to the depth to water table and the salinity in the vadose *** boundary between naked soil and soil with appearance of plant in the groundwater discharge area is dominated by the salinity in vadose zone.
