Analysis for Effects of temperature rise of PV Modules upon Driving Distance of Vehicle Integrated Photovoltaic Electric Vehicles

The development of vehicle integrated photovoltaics-powered electric vehicles (VIPV-EV) significantly reduces CO2 emissions from the transport sector to realize a decarbonized society. Although long-distance driving of VIPV-EV without electricity charging is expected in sunny regions, driving distance of VIPV-EV is affected by climate conditions such as solar irradiation and temperature rise of PV modules. In this paper, detailed analytical results for effects of climate conditions such as solar irradiation and temperature rise of PV modules upon driving distance of the VIPV-EV were presented by using test data for Toyota Prius and Nissan Van demonstration cars installed with high-efficiency InGaP/GaAs/InGaAs 3-junction solar cell modules with a module efficiency of more than 30%. The temperature rise of some PV modules studied in this study was shown to be expressed by some coefficients related to solar irradiation, wind speed and radiative cooling. The potential of VIPV-EV to be deployed in 10 major cities was also analyzed. Although sunshine cities such as Phoenix show the high reduction ratio of driving range with 17% due to temperature rise of VIPV modules, populous cities such as Tokyo show low reduction ratio of 9%. It was also shown in this paper that the difference between the driving distance of VIPV-EV driving in the morning and the afternoon is due to PV modules’ radiative cooling. In addition, the importance of heat dissipation of PV modules and the development of high-efficiency PV modules with better temperature coefficients was suggested in order to expand driving range of VIPV-EV. The effects of air-conditioner usage and partial shading in addition to the effects of temperature rise of VIPV modules were suggested as the other power losses of VIPV-EV.

For permanent magnet linear synchronous motor(PMLSM) working at trapezoidal speed for long time, high thrust brings high temperature rise, while low thrust limits dynamic performance. Thus, it is crucial to find a balance between temperature rise and dynamic performance. In this paper, a velocity planning model of the PMLSM at trapezoidal speed based on electromagnetic-fluid-thermal(EFT) field is proposed to obtain the optimal dynamic performance under temperature limitation. In this model, the winding loss is calculated considering the acceleration and deceleration time. The loss model is indirectly verified by the temperature rise experiment of an annular winding sample. The actual working conditions of the PMLSM are simulated by dynamic grid technology to research the influence of acceleration and deceleration on fluid flow in the air gap, and the variation rule of the thermal boundary condition is analyzed. Combined with the above conditions, the temperature rise of a coreless PMLSM(CPMLSM) under the rated working condition is calculated and analyzed in detail. Through this method and several iterations, the optimal dynamic performance under the temperature limitation is achieved. The result is verified by a comparison between simulation and prototype tests, which can help improve the dynamic performance.

Uncertainty of temperature rise under nationally determined contributions and carbon neutral policies

Nationally determined contributions raised by Paris Agreement aim to control the temperature rise below 2°C or even 1.5°C at the end of the 21st century,compared to pre-industrial levels.However,the climate response of the Nationally Determined Contributions(NDCs)remains uncertain due to unstable policies and their credibility.In this study,we calculated the uncertainty of global temperature rise caused by uncertain NDCs and carbon-neutral policies and discussed the difficulty of policy implementation.The results show that there will be 8 GtC uncertainty in emission at the end of the 21st century,responsible for the temperature rise of 0.37°C(1.73–2.10°C).A delayed policy in emission reduction by major emitters would result in a temperature rise of over 2°C,while under non-delay policy,the 2°C target will be possibly achieved.Besides,low-emission countries would introduce a 30 GtC cumulative emission uncertainty at the end of the 21st century if there are no restrictions,leading to a 0.3°C global warming uncertainty.Developed countries need more substantial reductions in carbon intensity to achieve their climate policies while developing countries are under less pressure.The reduction of carbon intensity requires the strengthening of technical and economic methods.This study provides a reference for the realization of emission policies and temperature rise targets.

Short circuit analysis of a fault-tolerant current-limiting high temperature superconducting transformer in a power system in presence of distributed generations

Power transformers are key elements for the safe and reliable delivery of electrical energy generated by renewable energy resources to consumers via transmission lines.Fault‐tolerant current‐limiting High temperature Superconducting(FTCL HTS)transformers are type of superconducting transformers that tolerate fault for seconds and limit the fault current without the threat of burnout or delamination of tapes and deformation of windings.In this paper,the fault performance of a FTCL HTS transformer in a standard IEEE power system is investigated.The studied transformer is a 50 MVA 132 kV/13.8 kV transformer where both windings are made up of HTS tapes.The understudied power system consists of two microgrids with distributed generators.Part of the power in microgrids is supplied by the upstream grid which is connected to the microgrids through the HTS transformers.Two fault scenarios have been considered in this power system,in each one of these scenarios,a fault happens in one of the microgrids.Two considered fault scenarios have an approximate fault current of 18x to 23x of the rated current in the secondary windings.Results showed that insulated windings in FTCL HTS transformers could substantially reduce the peak temperature of the HTS windings,compared to bare windings.Afterwards,post‐fault loading is imposed on the HTS windings,to observe their performance against the current increase after fault clearance.In this case,for the first scenario of the faults,the FTCL HTS transformer could tolerate 192%of post‐fault overloading,while this number for the second fault scenario is 170%.Finally,the impact of post‐fault loading on the full recovery time was discussed.

Three-dimensional flow field,temperature field and thermal deformation of solid in spool valve with notches and without notches was calculated by using software FLUENT and ANSYS.The numerical results showed that the temperature distribution of fluid and solid was nonuniform in the spool valve.The temperature of the jet flow close to the solid wall was high,and the temperature in the center of the jet flow was low.In addition,the highest temperature located on the solid wall near to the orifice and on the wall in valve chamber impacted by the jet.The maximum deformation in spool and valve body caused by the temperature rise could come up to several microns,and there was an overall bending deformation in the spool and valve body.These two types of deformation could directly lead to the phenomenon of spool clamping.

Electromagnetic-thermal-mechanical characteristics with active feedback control in a high-temperature superconducting noinsulation magnet

High-temperature superconducting(HTS) magnets consisting of no-insulation(NI) double-pancake coils(DPCs) with high thermal stability have been proposed for use in the preparation of high-field magnets. However, increased ramp time is a known disadvantage of the NI approach. To solve this problem, a proportional and integral(PI) active feedback control has been proposed in the charging experiments of the NI magnet. In this study, the electromagnetic-thermal-mechanical characteristics of an NI magnet with and without PI are analyzed to ensure the safety and reliability of PI control. Due to the increase in the radial current of the magnet, the turn-to-turn loss energy of the magnet with PI is more than twice that without PI. However, the magnetization loss energy of the magnet has a small difference with and without PI. It can be also found that the NI magnet with PI has a large temperature rise, and thus it has a low thermal stability margin. Moreover, in the high field, the hoop stress and hoop strain peaks of a magnet with PI are larger than those without PI. Thus, PI control can induce a relatively high risk of mechanical damage in the applications of NI magnets.

Dynamic, thermal, and vibrational analysis of ball bearings with over-skidding behavior

The term“over-skidding”indicates that the cage rotational speed ratio exceeds the theoretical value as ball purely rolls on the raceway.Different from the skidding phenomenon that occurs in low-load and high-speed bearing,over-skidding usually occurs in large-size angular contact bearings,and it is still difficult to suppress under high load conditions.The main forms of damage to the raceway by over-skidding are spinning and gyro slip.To further explore the vibration characteristics and thermal effects of this phenomenon,a set of over-skidding tests of an angular contact bearing with a bore diameter of 220 mm were conducted on an industrial-size test bench.Through the experiment,the influence of axial load,rotational speed,and lubrication conditions on the occurrence of over-skidding were determined.Based on a previous dynamics model,the heat generation and thermal network models were integrated in the present study to predict the over-skidding and its thermal behavior.The model was validated in terms of the measured degree of over-skidding and temperature rise.The results showed that the degree of over-skidding reaches up to 12%of the theoretical value,and the friction power loss of the ball-pocket accounts for 30%of the total power loss.The analysis of the vibration signal showed a strong correlation between the bearing vibration characteristics and over-skidding behavior,thereby providing a way to indirectly measure the degree of over-skidding.

A perspective on biochar for repairing damages in the soil-plant system caused by climate change-driven extreme weather events

There has been more than 75%rise in the number of extreme weather events such as drought and flood during 2000-2019 compared to 1980-1999 due to the adverse effects of climate change,causing significant deterioration of the soil and water quality.Simultaneously,the growing human population has been exerting pressure on available water and soil resources due to overuse or unplanned use.While greenhouse gas emissions have intensified,the fertility of agricultural soils has declined globally due to the exposure of soils to frequent flooding,desertification,and salinization(resulting from extreme weather events).The current review aims to give an overview of damages caused to the soil-plant system by extreme weather events and provide a perspective on how biochar can repair the damaged system.Biochar is known to improve soil fertility,increase crop productivity and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions via sustainable recycling of bio-waste.Beneficial properties of biochar such as alkaline pH,high cation exchange capacity,abundant surface functional groups,remarkable surface area,adequate porosity,excellent water holding capacity,and sufficient nutrient retention capacity can help repair the adverse effects of extreme weather events in the soil-plant system.This paper recommends some cautious future approaches that can propel biochar’s use in improving the soil-plant systems and promoting sustainable functioning of extreme weather-affected areas via mitigation of the adverse effects.

Conceptual design of the CEPC dumping system

Background The circular electron–positron collider(CEPC)is a double-ring collider proposed by Chinese scientists.It will be operated at centre-of-mass energy of 240,90,160 GeV and maybe also 360 GeV.Purpose The total energy stored in the collider is up to 20 MJ.It is important to extract beams safely and not to damage the dump.In this paper,a dumping system including dilution kickers and absorber core with iron shielding is discussed.Methods The Monte Carlo code FLUKA is used to obtain the deposited energy and dose-equivalent distributions.The temperature rises are calculated assuming no heat conduction.Results Compared with the melting point and upper limit of dose equivalent,the magnets parameters are determined and the dimensions of the core and shielding are optimized.Conclusion The design of the dumping system meets the requirement that the energy stored in the collider can be absorbed safely.

A review on the generation, determination and mitigation of Urban Heat Island

Urban Heat Island （UHI） is considered as one of the major problems in the 21st century posed to human beings as a result of urbanization and industrialization of human civilization. The large amount of heat generated from urban structures, as they consume and re-radiate solar radiations, and from the anthropogenic heat sources are the main causes of UHI. The two heat sources increase the temperatures of an urban area as compared to its surroundings, which is known as Urban Heat Island Intensity （UHII）. The problem is even worse in cities or metropolises with large population and extensive economic activities. The estimated three billion people living in the urban areas in the world are directly exposed to the problem, which will be increased significantly in the near future. Due to the severity of the problem, vast research effort has been dedicated and a wide range of literature is available for the subject. The literature available in this area includes the latest research approaches, concepts, methodologies, latest investigation tools and mitigation measures. This study was carded out to review and summarize this research area through an investigation of the most important feature of UHI. It was concluded that the heat re-radiated by the urban structures plays the most important role which should be investigated in details to study urban heating especially the UHI. It was also concluded that the future research should be focused on design and planning parameters for reducing the effects of urban heat island and ultimately living in a better environment.
