Background： Pine bark is a rich source of phytochemical compounds including tannins, phenolic acids, anthocyanins, and fatty acids. These phytochemicals have potential to significantly impact on animal health and animal production. The goal of this work is to measure the effects of tannins in ground pine bark as a partial feed replacement on feed intake, dietary apparent digestibility, nitrogen balance, and mineral retention in meat goats. Results： Eighteen Kiko cross goats （initial BW = 31.8 ± 1.49 kg） were randomly assigned to three treatment groups （n = 6）. Dietary treatments were tested： control （0 % pine bark powder （PB） and 30 % wheat straw （WS））; ] 5 % PB and 15 % WS, and 30 % PB and 0 % WS. Although dry matter （DM） intake and digestibility were not affected （P〉 0.10） by feeding PB, neutral detergent fiber （linear; P= 0.01）, acid detergent fiber （linear; P= 0.001） and lignin digestibility （linear; P= 0.01） decreased, and crude protein （CP） digestibility tended to decrease （P=0.09） as PB increased in the diet, apparent retention of Ca （P= 0.09）, P （P=0.03）, Mg （P= 0.01）, Mn （P= 0.01）, Zn （P= 0.01） and Fe （P= 0.09） also increased linearly. Nitrogen intake and fecal N excretion were not affected （P〉 0.05） by addition of PB in the diet, but N balance in the body was quadratically increased （P〈 0.01） in the 15 % PB diet compared to other diets. This may be due to more rumen escape protein and less excreted N in the urine with the 15 % PB diet. The study showed that a moderate level of tannin-containing pine bark supplementation could improve gastrointestinal nitrogen balance with the aim of improving animal performance. Conclusion： These results suggest that tannin-containing PB has negative impact on fiber, lignin, and protein digestibility, but positively impacted on N-balance.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of 10 weeks supplementation of Quebracho tannins(QT; 0 [control], 100 [QT100] or 200 g/[cow$d] [QT_(200)]) to 30 multiparous postpartum buffalo cows(10 cows per group) on milk yield and composition, blood metabolites and reproductive performance.Supplementation of QT100 had no significant effect on milk yield, whereas QT_(200) decreased(P < 0.05) this trait. Compared with the control group, both QT levels decreased(P < 0.05) fat-corrected milk(FCM)yield, but no significant effects were found on percentages of milk fat and protein. Contrariwise, yields of milk fat, lactose and milk protein were decreased(P < 0.05) when QT_(200) was supplemented. The solids nonfat(SNF) percentage and yield were decreased(P < 0.05) with QT100 supplementation. Moreover, QT tended to numerically reduce total number of ovarian follicles, number of small follicles, peripheral progesterone concentration and conception rate. Supplementation of QT_(200) numerically increased number of large follicles, mean diameter of large follicle, number and diameters of corpora lutea. The inclusion of QT_(200) shortened days open(DO) and decreased number of services per conception.Contrariwise, QT did not show significant effects on serum total protein, albumin, globulin, glucose,cholesterol and triglycerides concentrations. Supplementation of QT100 caused an increase(P < 0.05) of serum urea compared with that in control and QT_(200) groups. Generally, QT decreased(P < 0.05) serum creatinine concentration. Therefore, the supplementation of a commercial QT to early lactating Egyptian buffalo cows displayed negative consequences on their productive and reproductive performances.

Naturally occurring plant compounds including tannins, saponins and essential oils are extensively assessed as natural alternatives to in-feed antibiotics.tannins are a group of polyphenolic compounds that are widely present in plant region and possess various biological activities including antimicrobial,anti-parasitic, anti-viral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulation, etc.Therefore, tannins are the major research subject in developing natural alternative to in-feed antibiotics.Strong protein affinity is the well-recognized property of plant tannins, which has successfully been applied to ruminant nutrition to decrease protein degradation in the rumen, and thereby improve protein utilization and animal production efficiency.Incorporations of tannin-containing forage in ruminant diets to control animal pasture bloat, intestinal parasite and pathogenic bacteria load are another 3 important applications of tannins in ruminant animals.tannins have traditionally been regarded as "anti-nutritional factor" for monogastric animals and poultry, but recent researches have revealed some of them, when applied in appropriate manner, improved intestinal microbial ecosystem, enhanced gut health and hence increased productive performance.The applicability of plant tannins as an alternative to in-feed antibiotics depends on many factors that contribute to the great variability in their observed efficacies.

Objective:To evaluate the protective effect of tannins from Ficus racemosa(F.racemosa) on the lipid profile and antioxidant parameters in high fat meal and streptozotocin induced hypercholestremia associated diabetes model in rats.Methods:The crude tannin fraction was separated from the acetone(70%v/v) bark extract of F.racemosa.Oral administratipn of tannin fraction(TF)(100 & 200 mg/kg body weight) to rats fed with high fat meal for 30 days (4%cholesterol,1%cholic acid,0.5%egg albumin) and injected with streptozotocin(35 mg/ kg i.***.in citrate buffer on 14th day).Results:The administration of TF significantly reverse the increased blood glucose,total cholesterol,triglycerides,low density lipoprotein and also significandy restored the insulin and high density lipoprotein in the serum.In addition tannins significantly restored the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase,catalase and decreased the,glutathione peroxidase,and glutathione,thereby restoring the antioxidant status of the organs to almost normal levels.Conclutions:The results of this study show that two different doses of tannin supplementation had a favorable effect on plasma glucose and lipid profile concentrations.It also had an influence on attenuating oxidative stress in diabetic tats.

The tannins immobilized chitosan-Ce4+ resins(TCCR) were prepared. The optimum conditions on activating and coupling of chitosan resins were obtained by means of orthogonal design experiments. TCCR were characterized by DSC and FT-IR. The adsorption capacity for bovine serum albumin(BSA) of TCCR was investigated. The results show that TCCR have an excellent adsorption capacity for BSA in water,comparing with chitosan-Ce4+ resins(CCR) . The TCCR can be a novel functional material for removal protein in some beverages.

In order to make Mucuna seeds consumable, seeds are treated according to the following procedures: boiling, soaking followed by boiling in the presence of 0.5% KOH and finally soaking for a long time followed by boiling in the presence of 0.5% KOH, so that tannins can be removed. Preliminary studies done on the raw seeds of four Mucuna species revealed the presence of tannins. The results showed that the crushed seeds contained all high tannin with the content of 0.370 g GAE/100g DM, 0.336 g GAE/100g DM;0.266 g GAE/100g DM and 0.203 g GAE/100g DM for Mucuna deerigiana, Mucuna nagaland, Mucuna cochinchinensis and Mucuna rajada respectively. The different methods of seed treatment significantly reduced the tannin content in Mucuna seeds. The method of soaking the seeds for 12 hours and then scalding in the presence of 0.5% KOH reduced tannins in Mucuna deerigiana, Mucuna nagaland, Mucuna cochinchinensis, and Mucuna rajada seeds by 47.29%;48.21%;66.16%;and 15.76% respectively. This method gave the highest tannin reduction rate.

Objective:To investigate the changes in total phenols,flavonoids,tannins,vitamin E, β-carotene and antioxidant activity during soaking of three white sorghum varieties.Methods: The changes in total phenols,total ilavonoids,tannins,phenolic acids compounds,flavonoid components,vitamin E,P-carotene and antioxidant activity during soaking of sorghum grains were determined.Results:Total phenols,total flavonoids,tannins,vitamin E,P-carotene and antioxidant activity in raw sorghum were ranged from 109.21 to 116.70,45.91 to 54.69,1.39 to 21.79 mg/100 g,1.74 to 5.25,0.54 to 1.19 mg/kg and 21.72%to 27.69%and 25.29%to 31.97%,respectively. The above measured compounds were significantly decreased after soaking.p-Hydroxybenzoic acid,vanillic acid,syringic acid and cinnamic acid represent the major phenolic acids in Dorado variety.While ferulic acid,p-coumaric acid,gallic acid and caffeic acid represent the major phenolic acids in Shandaweel-6.On the other hand,protocatechuic acid represents the major phenolic acids in Giza-15.Regarding flavonoids components,Dorado was the highest variety in kampferol and naringenin while Shandaweel-6 was the highest variety in luteolin, apigenin,hypersoid,quercelin and christen.Finally,Giza-15 was the highest variety in catechin. Phenolic acids,flavonoid compounds and antioxidant activities were decreased after soaking. Conclusions:Sorghum varieties have moderate quantities from total phenols,total flavonoids, tannins,phenolic acids compounds,flavonoid components,vitamin E,P-carotene and antioxidant activity which decreased after soaking.

Background:Recently,interest in the use of herbs and phytogenic compounds has grown because of their potential role in the production and health of livestock animals.Among these compounds,several tannins have been tested in poultry,but those from chestnut wood and grape-industry byproducts have attracted remarkable interest.Thus,the present study aimed to gain further insights into the mechanisms involved in the response to the dietary supplementation with extracts of chestnut wood or grape pomace.To this purpose,864 broiler chickens were fed a control diet(C)or the same diet supplemented 0.2%chestnut wood(CN)extract or 0.2%grape pomace(GP)extract from hatching until commercial slaughtering(at 45 days of age)to assess their effects on performance,meat quality,jejunum immune response and whole-transcriptome profiling in both sexes at different ages(15 and 35 d).Results:Final live weight and daily weight gain significantly increased(P<0.01)in chickens fed GP diets compared to CN and C diets.The villi height was lower in chickens fed the CN diet than in those fed the C diet(P<0.001);moreover,a lower density of CD45~+cells was observed in chickens fed the CN diet(P<0.05)compared to those fed the C and GP diets.Genes involved in either pro-or anti-inflammatory response pathways,and antimicrobial and antioxidant responses were affected by GP and CN diets.There was no effect of the dietary treatment on meat quality.Regarding sex,in addition to a lower growth performance,females showed a lower occurrence of wooden breast(16.7%vs.55.6%;P<0.001)and a higher occurrence of spaghetti meat(48.6%vs.4.17%;P<0.001)in pectoralis major muscles after slaughtering than those in males.Based on the results of whole-transcriptome profiling,a significant activation of some molecular pathways related to immunity was observed in males compared with those of females.Conclusions:The GP supplementation improved chicken performance and promoted immune responses in the intestinal mucosa;moreover,age and sex were associated with the most relevan
