Actinidia(Actinidiaceae)is of economic importance for its edible fruits.Traditional taxonomy divided the genus into four sections,Leiocarpae Dunn,Maculatae Dunn,Strigosae Li,and Stellatae Li.However,phylogenetic studies based on morphology and molecular markers have posed challenges to the four-section scheme.It appears that the natural classification of the genus points to the existence of two groups,one comprising Leiocarpae,and the other Maculatae,Strigosae,and Stellatae.Single-or low-copy genes would probably be useful in untangling the perplexity and the reticulate evolution of the genus.However,any phylogenetic studies must be firmly based on sound taxonomy and identification.Population sampling throughout the distribution range of the taxa should be carried out in order to study the variation pattern of the morphology and,ultimately,to clarify the confusion existing in some taxa.A combination of morphometrics and molecular data is highly desirable for resolving the uncertainty in Actinidia taxonomy.

The fossil history of turtle and whale barnacles(Coronuloidea:Chelonibiidae,Platylepadidae,Coronulidae and†Emersoniidae)is fragmentary and has only been investigated in part.Morphological inferences and molecular phylogenetic analyses on extant specimens suggest that the roots of whale barnacles(Coronulidae)are to be found among the chelonibiid turtle barnacles,but the hard-part modifications that enabled early coronuloids to attach to the cetacean skin are still largely to be perceived.Here,we reappraise a fossil chelonibiid specimen from the Miocene of insular Tanzania that was previously referred to the living species Chelonibia caretta.This largely forgotten specimen is here described as the holotype of the new species†Chelonibia zanzibarensis.While similar to C.caretta,†C.zanzibarensis exhibits obvious external longitudinal parietal canals occurring in-between external longitudinal parietal septa that abut outwards to form T-shaped flanges,a character so far regarded as proper of the seemingly more derived Coronulidae and Platylepadidae.Along with these features,the presence of a substrate imprint on the shell exterior indicates that†C.zanzibarensis grasped its host’s integument in much the same way as coronulids and platylepadids,albeit without the development of macroscopic parietal buttresses and bolsters.Thin section analyses of the inner parietal architecture of some extant and extinct coronuloids conclusively demonstrate that vestiges of comparable external parietal microstructures are present in some living members of Chelonibiidae.This observation strengthens the unity of Coronuloidea while significantly contributing to our understanding of the evolution of the coronuloid shell structure in adapting to a diverse spectrum of hosts.

The halictid genus Lasioglossum,as one of the most species-rich bee groups with persistently contentious subgeneric boundaries,is one of the most challenging bee groups from a systematic standpoint.An enduring question is the relationship of La-sioglossum and Homalictus,whether all halictine bees with weakened distal wing ve-nation comprise one or multiple genera.Here,we analyzed the phylogenetic relation-ships among the subgroups within Lasioglossum s.***.based on thousands of single-copy orthologs and ultraconserved elements,which were extracted from 23 newly sequenced low-coverage whole genomes alongside a published genome(22 ingroups plus 2 out-groups).Both marker sets provided consistent results across maximum likelihood and coalescent-based species tree approaches.The phylogenetic and topology test results show that the Lasioglossum and Hemihalictus series are reciprocally monophyletic and Homa-lictus and Rostrohalictus are valid subgenera of Lasioglossum.Consequently,we lower Homalictus to subgenus status within Lasioglossum again,and we also raise Rostrohalic-tus to subgenus status from its prior synonymy with subgenus Hemihalictus.Lasioglossum przewalskyi is also transferred to the subgenus Hemihalictus.Ultimately,we redefine La-sioglossum to include all halictine bees with weakened distal wing venation.

DNA barcoding is a supplementary tool in plant systematics,extensively used to resolve the species level controversies.This paper details the identification of DNA barcodes for seven species of Momordica,using the chloroplast gene mat K.Since the species M.cymbalaria has been confused as a member of the genus Luffa,26 accessions of Momordica belonging to seven Indian species and two accessions of Luffa acutangula were included in this study.Analysis of mat K sequences has yielded distinct barcodes in M.charantia var.charantia,M.subangulata subsp.renigera,M.cochinchinensis,M.balsamina,M.cymbalaria and also in Luffa acutangula.Evolutionary status of each species was reflected as nucleotide polymorphisms in each sequence.The wild species M.dioica and M.sahyadrica have yielded one barcode but failed to get differentiated.Further,this study provides conclusive proof that M.cymbalaria is a member of Momordica genus.The phylogram generated was successful to distinguish the monoecious species of this genus,M.charantia,M.balsamina and M.cymbalaria,from the dioecious species M.dioica,M.sahyadrica,M.subangulata subsp.renigera and M.cochinchinensis.Thus,mat K locus,by accumulating the evolutionary sequence variations,is proven efficient to differentiate the Momordica species and to reveal their relatedness.

During a study on the diversity of ciliated protists in Lake Weishan Wetland,the largest wetland in northern China,four epibiotic sessilid peritrichs were isolated from aquatic host animals.Two of them,i.e.,Epistylis cambari Kellicott,1885 and Epistylis lwof Fauré-Fremiet,1943,were known species whereas the other two,i.e.,Parapiosoma typicum gen.nov.,sp.***.and Orborhabdostyla gracilis sp.nov.,are new to science.The new genus Parapiosoma gen.***.is characterized by its branched non-contractile stalk,everted peristomial lip,obconical macronucleus and transverse silverlines.Two species are assigned to the new genus,namely Parapiosoma typicum sp.***.and Parapiosoma gasterostei(Fauré-Fremiet,1905)comb.nov.Morphologically,P.typicum sp.***.is recognized by its goblet-shaped zooids,single-layered peristomial lip,dichotomously branched stalk,and infundibular polykinety 3(P3)containing three equal-length rows.Orborhabdostyla gracilis sp.***.is characterized by its slender zooid,curved macronucleus,and three equal-length rows in infundibular P3.Improved diagnoses and redescriptions of E.cambari and E.lwof are provided including,for the frst time,data on the ciliature of E.cambari.Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA,ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2,and LSU rDNA sequence data strongly support the assertion that the family Epistylididae comprises morphospecies with diferent evolutionary lineages and indicate that Parapiosoma gen.***.may represent a new taxon at family level.

On the basis of Hauser-Feshbach theory and some approximations,parametrized formulae of isomeric cross section ratio including two adjustableparameters for(n,t)reaction at 14.6MeV are derived.By fitting these formulae to theavailable measured data,parameters are obtained and the systematic behaviour of theisomeric cross section ratio are studied.The isomeric cross section ratio predicted by thepresent work is in good agreement with the limited measured data.

In sharp contrast to their pelagic relatives,the oligotrichs,the overwhelming majority of hypotrich ciliates inhabit the benthos.Only a few species,including those of the genus Hypotrichidium Ilowaisky,1921,have adapted to a planktonic lifestyle.The ontogenetic mode of the highly differentiated ciliate,Hypotrichidium tisiae(Gelei,1929)Gelei,1954,is unknown.In this study,the interphase morphology and the ontogenetic process of this species are investigated.Accordingly,the previously unidentified ciliary pattern of Hypotrichidium is redefined.The main morphogenetic features are as follows:(1)The parental adoral zone of membranelles is inherited completely by the proter and the oral primordium of the opisthe arises in a deep pouch.(2)Five frontoventral cirral anlagen(FVA)are formed:FVA I contributes to the single frontal cirrus,FVA II–IV generate three frontoventral cirral rows,FVA V migrates and forms postoral ventral cirri.(3)All marginal cirral row anlagen develop de novo:each of the two left anlagen forms a single cirral row,while the single right anlage fragments into anterior and posterior parts.(4)Two dorsal kinety anlagen occur de novo,with the right one fragmenting to form kineties 2 and 3.(5)Two long caudal cirral rows are formed at the ends of dorsal kineties 1 and 3.On the basis of the morphogenetic features and phylogenetic analyses,the assignment of Hypotrichidium to the family Spirofilidae Gelei,1929 within Postoralida is supported.The establishment of separate families for the slender“tubicolous”spirofilids and the highly helical spirofilids is also validated.
