Our research group used sequence data from all three genomes:nuclear ITS1 and ITS2, plastid trnS-rps4-trnT-trnL-trnF and rpll6,and mitochondrial nad5 intron,to study the familial delimitation,generic phylogeny and morphological evolution of the Neckeraceae.The family was shown to be a sistergroup of the Lembophyllaceae and to be monophyletic in its new circumscription.The Thamnobryaceae has sometimes been recognized as an independent family, but most of its members are nested within the Neckeraceae,as are also those of the Leptodontaceae.Some taxa,particularly among the South American Porotrichum(plus Dixonia), fall outside of the Neckeraceae and together with Orthostichella form a separate,as yet undescribed,family.Other taxa that do not belong in the Neckeraceae but whose relationships need further study are Homalia webbiana,Baldwiniella kealeensis and Isodrepanium lentulum. The genera Homaliadelphus and Bissetia have already been transferred to the recently described Miyabeaceae.

The phylogenetic relationship in Actinidia, Saurauia, and Clematoclethra has long been under debate. Early floral development was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and compared in Clematoclethra scandens and Saurauia nepaulensis (Actinidiaceae). In Saurauia nepaulensis, five sepals are initiated in two-fifths quincuncial sequence, while five petals appear in one whorl with a delay time. The five-petals primordial are swollen long after the sepals are shaped well, and meanwhile the first whorl of about 17 stamens are also obviously initiated. During the development progress, the outer stamen primordium is divided into two or three secondary primordial of stamens to the side and outward. So, there are about 40-50 stamen primordial formed by a centrifugal sequence. At the same time, one whorl of five carpels primordial is also swollen at the same speed to the stamen primordial. The syncarpous primordial don’t fuse so highly that basal-axial placentation develops. In Clematoclethra scandens, five sepals are initiated in two-fifths qunicuncial sequences, while five petals appear with a unidirectional sequence from abaxial to adaxial side of floral primordium. Two petal primordial abaxial side appear earlier than the rest three ones adaxial side. When five petal primordial are swollen to the same size, one whorl of five outer stamen primordial are produced alternately with five petals. And then comes one whorl of five inner stamen primordial which are alternate with the outer stamens. The outer stamen primordial are of lager size than those of the inner ones when elongating inwards. It reveals that two whorls of 10 stamens in Clematoclthra are produced by centripetal sequence. After the two whorls of stamens primordial are formed well, one whorl of five carpels occurs in the top mount of the floral primordium. Comparative floral organogenesis in Actnidiaceae indicates that each genus has its own unique floral development patterns. Both five sepals and five petals are produced in two-fifiths quincuncial seq
