Prevalence and factors associated with non-adherence to therapy among partners of pregnant women with syphilis in a city of northeastern Brazil

BACKGROUND One of the main difficulties faced in the prevention of the vertical transmission of syphilis is the inadequate treatment of pregnant women and their *** disease causes serious repercussions in infected *** To evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with the therapeutic adhesion among partners of pregnant women with syphilis in a county in Northeastern *** This is a descriptive,analytic,quantitative,cross-sectional study that was carried out through interviews with 46 pregnant women diagnosed with syphilis between 2017 and 2018 as well as with their *** interviews aimed at collecting data regarding sociodemographic characteristics,obstetric variables and information about syphilis,and partners’related *** Our results showed that 73.91%of the partners did not undergo appropriate treatments,and obtaining negative results in syphilis tests was the main reason for the absence of *** following factors were significantly associated with the lack of treatment among partners:Being a partner that is not the current mate of the pregnant woman,having a level of schooling inferior to 8 years[oddsratio(OR)=10.28],and the pregnant woman undergoing up to two syphilis tests during the prenatal care(OR=8.6).The study found a higher odds of absent treatment among partners if the pregnant woman is not white(OR=13.88)or if the partner has less than 8 years of schooling(OR=21.00)or has a monthly income of less than half the minimum wage(OR=13.93).CONCLUSION The findings of this study show a high prevalence of partners that are not adequately treated for syphilis,a phenomenon that is strongly associated with socioeconomic factors.

Objective:Laboratory diagnosis of neurosyphilis(NS)remains a great *** study was the aimed to identify miRNA candidates as biomarkers to distinguish between NS,non-neurosyphilis,and healthy controls(HCs).Methods:We analyzed miRNA expression profiles in peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMCs)from six patients with NS,eight patients with secondary syphilis(SS),and five HCs using microarray *** differentially expressed miRNAs were validated in 33 NS samples,31 SS samples,and 30 HC samples using TaqMan miRNA real-time qPCR(qRT-PCR).Results:Thirty-nine miRNAs were differentially expressed in SS and NS patients compared with *** miRNAs were randomly selected to validate their expression levels in the same samples used in microarray assay by *** miRNAs were upregulated in SS and NS samples compared with ***-PCR analysis of the expression of the 13 miRNAs in a second cohort(76 samples)showed that the average expression levels of nine miRNAs were higher in SS than in NS(SS:0.185,NS:0.136,P=3.8E-10),while the expressions of the other four miRNAs were lower in SS than in NS(SS:0.000757,NS:0.000873,P=0.022).ROC curve analysis of the 13 miRNAs showed the area under the curve value to be 1.00 for distinguishing SS patients from HCs,1.00 for distinguishing NS patients from HCs,1.00 for distinguishing SS and NS patients from HCs,and 0.968 for distinguishing NS from SS ***:The present study is the first one that identified differentially expressed miRNAs in PBMCs from patients with *** results suggest that the 13 candidate miRNAs in PBMCs may be novel noninvasive biomarkers for NS diagnosis.

Objective:To identify the frequency of syphilis among Iranian HIV-positive ***:A cross-sectional study on the prevalence of syphilis and HIV co-infection among 450 patients diagnosed with HIV infection was conducted between 2004 and 2008 at Imam Khomeini hospital,Tehran,*** lab tests including CD4 cell count,cerebrospinal fluid,veneral disease research laboratory(VDRL),fluorescent treponema antibody-absorption(FTA-Abs)and viral load were performed for all the *** regarding medical history and their demographics were also ***:Of all 450 HIV-positive patients,24(5.3%)had a positive VDRL test and only two men had a FTA-Abs positive test which means 0.45%of them had a definite co-infection of syphilis.65.3%of the HIV-positive patients were injection drug users that the co-infection prevalence of them was 0.7%.We did not find any patient with ***:Considering the increasing prevalence of HIV and also extensive use of highly active antiretroviral therapy in developing nations,the diagnosis of syphilis should be timely established using screening tests among such patients.

Background Following the increased human immunodeficiency virus （HIV） notification （infection） rates via sexual transmission and increased abuse of new synthetic drugs instead of heroin in China, a study on HIV infections and risk factors among synthetic drugs and heroin users in Beijing was conducted to provide a cue for further development of targets and strategies of HIV/AIDS control and prevention for different drug populations. Methods A total of 428 subjects including 224 heroin users and 204 new synthetic drug users was recruited from communities in Beijing by convenience sampling. A X2 test was used to compare HIV and syphilis infections between the two subpopulations. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate factors related to HIV, syphilis infections and abuse of synthetic drugs. Results Unbalanced distributions of demographics were detected between the two subpopulations. Compared with heroin users, most users of synthetic drugs were migrants, single and of younger age （age 〈30 years）. Ten HIV infections and twenty-four syphilis infections were confirmed among 428 subjects. No significant difference in HIV infection was found between the two subpopulations （crude odds ratio （OR） =0.46, 95% confidence interval （CI）： 0.07-15.80 and adjusted odds ratio （AOR） =1.26, 95% Ch 0.09-18.28） while four times as many syphilis infections were identified among users of synthetics drugs （AOR=3.92, 95% CI： 1.06-14.56）. HIV and syphilis infections appeared to work *** migrants who were of Han ethnicity, single and who had stayed in Beijing for more than six months were more likely to abuse synthetics drugs. Conclusions The new synthetic drug users and heroin users are different subpopulations. We optimistically speculate that HIV has not yet been introduced into the former in Beijing, but considering higher syphilis infections in synthetic drug users and the role of syphilis in HIV infection, synthetic drug users, as a possible and important driver

Acute Syphilitic Hepatitis in the Early Secondary Phase: A Case Report and Literature Review

Background: The incidence of syphilis is clearly increasing. It is a source of visceral damage, particularly in the secondary phase. Acute syphilitic hepatitis is a rare clinical entity classically described but under-diagnosed because of its non-specific presentation. Case Presentation: We report the case of a 25-year-old French woman, without comorbidity, sexually active, having unprotected sex with only one partner. She was admitted to our unit for jaundice and a disturbed liver function test preceded 3 weeks earlier by a rash. The patient did not consume alcohol and did not report the introduction of a new medication. A skin rash compatible with syphilitic roseola and generalized adenopathy were found. The liver workup showed alanine aminotransferase (ALT) at 1984 U/L, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) at 1377 U/L, total bilirubin at 221 μmol/L, alkaline phosphatase activity (APL) at 419 U/L, gamma glutamyl transferase activity (GGT) at 229 U/L and a prothrombin concentration at 73%. The search for the most common etiologies of acute hepatitis was negative. Syphilitic serology was positive with a Treponema Pallidum Hemagglutinations Assay (TPHA) titration of 5120 IU and Veneral Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) of 64 IU. Abdominal ultrasound revealed only homogeneous hepatomegaly and splenomegaly with no focal lesions. Other sexually transmitted infections (STI) were negative and her partner had positive syphilis serology. After a single dose of Benzathine benzylpenicillin, the clinical signs regressed after one week and the hepatic balance tended to normalize 20 days later. Conclusion: This highlights the need for a high index of suspicion for syphilitic hepatitis in sexually active patients presenting with acute hepatitis associated with a cutaneous rash.

The purpose of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to assess knowledge level regarding signs and symptoms, prevention, treatment of STIs among a sample of residents from Southeastern Texas. One hundred and fifty-seven participants age 18 and over responded to the 23 questionnaire items. Questionnaires were distributed to mostly public places such as hair salons, fitness centers, health centers, gas stations, apartments, and stores. Results indicated that 50.3% of participants reported syphilis was not curable;while over 61% reported gonorrhea was incurable. Over 64% of respondents reported they did know the symptoms for syphilis and over 70% believed that syphilis was vaccine preventable. The data collected from this study indicated that some residents from Southeast Texas lack basic information concerning syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia with regard to prevention, signs and symptoms, and treatment. The cost and effort to increase educational programs and educational messages appear to be justified. Implications for practice include increasing funding and efforts to provide more educational programs focusing on sexually transmitted disease prevention, health literary education to dispel the myths and stigma related to STIs and community wide collaboration efforts to increase awareness.
