The grey-green divide:multi-temporal analysis of greenness across 10,000 urban centres derived from the Global Human Settlement Layer(GHSL)

The presence of green spaces within city centres has been recognized as a valuable component of the city *** provides a variety of benefits including energy saving,improved air quality,reduced noise pollution,decreased ambient temperature and psychological *** also shows that the amount of vegetation,known as‘greenness’,in densely populated areas,can also be an indicator of the relative wealth of a ***‘grey-green divide’,the contrast between built-up areas with a dominant grey colour and green spaces,is taken as a proxy indicator of sustainable management of cities and planning of urban *** and continuous assessment of greenness in cities is therefore essential for monitoring progress towards the United Nations sustainable development goal *** availability of multi-temporal greenness information from Landsat data archives together with data derived from the city centres database of the Global Human Settlement Layer(GHSL)initiative,offers a unique perspective to quantify and analyse changes in greenness across 10,323 urban centres all around the *** this research,we assess differences between greenness within and outside the built-up area for all the urban centres described by the city centres database of the *** also analyse changes in the amount of green space over time considering changes in the built-up areas in the periods 1990,2000 and *** results show an overall trend of increased greenness between 1990 and 2014 in most *** effect of greening is observed also for most of the 32 world *** conclude that using simple yet effective approaches exploiting open and free global data it is possible to provide quantitative information on the greenness of cities and its changes over *** information is of direct interest for urban planners and decision-makers to mitigate urban related environmental and social impacts.

Distribution dynamics,regional differences,and convergence of sustainable development of cities and communities in China

China is one of the most populated and rapidly urbanizing countries worldwide and was among the earliest countries to integrate sustainable development into urban *** achieve high-quality development and implement the objectives of“Transforming Our World:The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development”,it is crucial to measure and analyze the current level of sustainable development of cities in *** the principles of relevance,scientific rigor,universality,reliability,and timeliness,this study constructs an assessment index system for sustainable development,covering seven themes corresponding to the UN sustainable development goal *** detailed calculations,we obtained sustainable development indices for 139 Chinese cities from 2016 to 2022 and analyzed them in three dimensions:distribution dynamics,regional differences,and *** key findings are as ***,the level of sustainable development showed improvement,with the average score of included cities increasing by 11.88%from 2016 to ***,the level of sustainable development was relatively balanced,maintaining low Gini coefficients between 0.05 and ***,a weak overallσconvergence feature existed,with increased differentiation in *** a regional perspective,aσconvergence feature was observed in the northeastern but not in the western ***,both overall absoluteβ-convergence and conditionalβeffects were *** absoluteβ-convergence and conditionalβ-convergence were also *** study contributes to the literature by providing evidence of China’s urban sustainable development,offering policy insights for deepening the implementation of development goals in the future,and providing experiential reference for other developing countries to achieve sustainable development.
