Manifestations of sustainable design require renewable resources, impact the environment minimally, and connect people with the natural environment. This article is aimed to investigate the concept of Iranian traditional courtyards, as microclimate modifiers, for sustainable building design in hot-arid regions. To this end, a quantitative field survey is conducted to analyze various physical elements including the orientation, dimensions and proportions of enclosed and open spaces, physical bodies （opaque walls）, and transparent surfaces （openings） as well as natural elements （water and soil） in nine valuable Iranian traditional courtyard houses from BWhs mesoclimate. In conclusion, all survey-based data are integrated to propose a physical-environmental design model for courtyards in this region. Proposed model can be generalized to all design cases, where located in BWhs mesoclimate with similar environmental conditions.

Based on the advanced integrated technology of materials preparation and formation, a new pattern Zn-Al-Mg-RE anti-corrosion coating for steel structure sustainable design was manufactured by cored wires and high velocity arc spraying (HVAS) technologies. The developments of thermally sprayed coatings for steel structure protection were described. Based on Al, Zn, Zn-Al and Zn-Al-Mg coatings, the anti-corrosion properties of new-pattern Zn-Al-Mg-RE coating were evaluated through electrochemical methods including electrochemical polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) coupled with SEM and XRD. The models of Zn-Al-Mg-RE coating undergoing corrosion with the initial pinhole defect and the latter with accelerated products were also discussed. The results show that Zn-Al-Mg-RE coating exhibites excellent corrosion resistance for long-term immersion, which is helpful for the sustainable design of steel structure in aggressive corrosion conditions. And the corrosion products seem to possess certain self-sealing function.

The sustainable design approach presented in this paper supports an increased commitment to environmental stewardship and conservation, and results in an optimal balance of cost, environmental, societal, and human benefits while meeting the mission and function of the intended space structure. The aim of this paper is to develop the guidelines that could be applied in the design of a space structure in order to achieve the optimal overall lifetime performance of the space structure. Space structures are more than inanimate hunks of metal, glass and fabric. Every space structure that we design as structural engineers is like a child - a child that is conceived with a passionate vision of its form, structure and purpose; nurtured through the schematic design phase and the development of construction documents; and cared for during the labor pains of plan check corrections, requests for information, shop drawing review, and construction observation. Like children, our space structures mature, perform necessary functions during their lives, and eventually, grow old and die. The design of a sustainable space structure is a much more challenging and cross-disciplinary process than in the past and therefore it is necessary that the space structure is viewed as an integrated system and that all members of the design team work in a fully integrated fashion.

A compressive design and analysis of a turbofan engine is presented in this paper. The components of jet engine have been analyzed based on mechanical design concept. An attempt has been to select materials based on sustainability and green design considerations. The energy content （e） of the materials has been one of the parameters for material selection. The choice of material has a substantial impact on cost, manuthcturing process, and the life cycle efficiency. All components nose cone, fan blade, inlet shaft, including compressor has been solid modeled using Siemens NX 11.0 CAD software. The finite element analysis of every component was performed and found safe. A tolerance analysis was performed before assembly of the turbofan engine. A numerical analysis was completed on blade and inlet geometries to determine a more efficient turbofan engine. Thermal analysis was executed oi1 the cone and suitable corrections were made. Finally, the cost and the total energy were estimated to show how much energy is needed to manufacture a turbofan jet engine.

Growing environmental concerns require efforts for application of sustainability in construction industry. Today, there is an increasing need for sustainable building design. Besides, BIM （building information modeling） is one of the most noteworthy developments in construction industry. BIM is used to make the planning, design, construction, and operation process more integrated. The purpose of this paper is to survey application of BIM in sustainable building design. This exploration is done by reviewing the existing studies in the field of BIM and sustainable design. There have been few attempts to evaluate and analyze the benefits of BIM in sustainable design, and existing researches have not developed integrated analysis to evaluate different aspects of BIM application. In this study, BIM and sustainable design researches are categorized into some major areas. First, frameworks and design strategies for better implementation of sustainable design have been developed. Other application of BIM software is for improving sustainable design in which some case studies have been presented for this purpose. Another major area is focusing on a specific aspect of sustainable buildings such as using natural resources, energy simulation, daylighting analysis and carbon emissions. Scrutiny review of the current studies shows excellent potential for interaction of BIM with sustainable construction.

Driving is a highly demanding and responsible job in which both the driver and passengers are exposed to several occupational risks. However, poor design of driver’s workplace is a major risk factor responsible for the uncomfortable conditions which operators of this highly technological system are exposed to especially when engaged in long distance driving. This study aimed at developing anthropometric model for business bus drivers in Nigerian which would facilitate sustainable design of driver’s workplace. A sample size of 161 drivers was randomly selected among strata of operators of buses in selected motor parks in the study area for the ergonomic study. Twelve anthropometric data were collected and analysed to obtain their 5th, 50th and 95th percentiles with which the anthropometric model were developed. Anthropometric model developed from 1932 data points was presented in forms of table showing measurement of sitting driver’s body parts in his workspace indicating design for average as well as extremities of 5th and 95th percentiles. The model represents a database from which designers, manufacturers of equipment, machine, automobiles and household goods can obtain relevant body measurement of the population under study in relation relevant to specific product feature and for development of sustainable workspace design.

The contemporary artificial intelligence technology is moving towards the 2.0 stage in the generalized development. Explaining the upgrading path of sustainable design driven by the new generation of artificial intelligence can provide a certain basis and support for the rational application of artificial intelligence technology in design. Based on the research of artificial intelligence 2.0 application technology and a large number of design practice case, this paper focuses on the "artificial intelligence +" technical thinking, through relational comparison and hierarchical structure analysis, studies the value-added effect and new characteristics exhibited by the content, method, process, form, effect and other aspects of design under the concept of sustainability, and explores the upgrading mode and technology application approach of sustainable design. sustainable design has clear demand for artificial intelligence, and its development and evolution is also obviously influenced by the new generation of artificial intelligence technology, which has formed four upgrading paths: sensation, thinking, simulacrum and construction. The continuous integration of sustainable design and artificial intelligence is an obvious trend, which will endow design and its object with intelligent function and multi meaning value from four dimensions of cognition, thought, expression and action. New tools and subjects will profoundly affect the value creation of design in the three dimensions of environment, economy and society.

Wetland park has become an important content of urban landscape design in China, and it is urgent to explore the ways of ensuring scientifi c planning and design and successful implementation of the planning and design in the preparatory stage and the late habitat management and monitoring stage. Taking Hong Kong Wetland Park for example, this paper reviewed the successful design concepts and scientifi c management practices on the basis of sorting out its planning, construction, management and monitoring experience, to provide useful references for the planning, design and management of wetland park in other regions.

Environmental awareness is going deeply into the hearts of people in nowadays. Interior environment design of buildings is one of the manifestations of life quality, and furniture is one of the important elements composing interior design. In order to realize using the lowest cost to enjoy the best home life, the paper discusses sustainable design methods from different perspectives, and uses science and technology to integrate art, culture and nature. For the development status of furniture market, the paper researches how to solve the problems faced by furniture market by sustainable design, for achieving continuable, recycle and recoverable objective to control cost and enrich home life of consumer.
