The current article addresses a new strategy for the preparation of polylactic acid/cellulose nanocrystal(PLA/CNCs)nanobiocomposite films with improved structural morphology,mechanical and barrier properties for food packaging applications.The addition of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)and sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS)as cationic and anionic surfactants respectively,was found to play a crucial role in preventing re-aggregation of the CNCs during drying and improving the dispersion of CNCs in the PLA.The coated paper was characterized using mechanical tests,water vapor permeability(WVP),X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and air permeability.The results showed that the paper coated with PLA containing 7.5%CNCs and 0.15%CTAB based on weight of PLA,gives the highest measured paper properties,where an increase in tensile strength(+133%),Young’s modulus(+309%),tear index(+183%),burst(+60.8)and a decrease in air permeability(−92%)was obtained.

Reversible double water in oil in water(W/O/W)emulsions were developed to contain subsurface hydrocarbon spills during their remediation using surfactant flushing.Double emulsions were prepared by emulsifying CaCl2 solutions in canola oil,and subsequently by emulsifying the W/O emulsions in aqueous sodium alginate solutions.The formation of double emulsions was confirmed with confocal and optical microscopy.The double emulsions reversed and gelled when mixed with the surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)and cocamidopropyl betaine(CPB).Gels can act as’emulsion locks’to prevent spreading of the hydrocarbon plume from the areas treated with surfactant flushing,as shown in sand column tests.Shear rheology was used to quantify the viscoelastic moduli increase(gelation)upon mixing the double emulsion with SDS and CPB.SDS was more effective than CPB in gelling the double emulsions.CPB and SDS could adsorb at the interface between water and model hydrocarbons(toluene and motor oil),lowering the interfacial tension and rigidifying the interface(as shown with a Langmuir trough).Bottle tests and optical microscopy showed that SDS and CPB produced W/O and O/W emulsions,with either toluene or motor oil and water.The emulsification of motor oil and toluene in water with SDS and CPB facilitated their flow through sand columns and their recovery.Toluene recovery from sand columns was quantitated using Gas-Chromatography MassSpectroscopy(GC-MS).The data show that SDS and CPB can be used both for surfactant flushing and to trigger the gelation of’emulsion locks’.Ethanol also gelled the emulsions at100 mL/L.

Four surfactants, sodium cholate（SC）, n-dodecyl-β-D-maltopyranoside（DDM）, lauryldimethylalnine oxide（LDAO） and Triton X-100（TX）, which are generally used in photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes preparation, were studied on their interaction with photosynthetic membrane from Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.1 by elec- trochromic absorption band-shift of endogenous carotenoids and by vesicle size measurements as well. The surfactant critical micelle concentration（cmc） was found to be negatively correlated with the capability of enhancing the per-meability of photosynthetic membranes to proton, and more elaborated model of snrfactants interacting with membranes was obtained. The electrochromic absorption band-shill measurement might develop into a useful tool to evaluate the effects of surfactants on various membranes.

Reservoir wettability plays an important role in various oil recovery processes.The origin and evolution of reservoir wettability were critically reviewed to better understand the complexity of wettability due to interactions in crude oil-brine-rock system,with introduction of different wetting states and their influence on fluid distribution in pore spaces.The effect of wettability on oil recovery of waterflooding was then summarized from past and recent research to emphasize the importance of wettability in oil displacement by brine.The mechanism of wettability alteration by different surfactants in both carbonate and sandstone reservoirs was analyzed,concerning their distinct surface chemistry,and different interaction patterns of surfactants with components on rock surface.Other concerns such as the combined effect of wettability alteration and interfacial tension （IFT） reduction on the imbibition process was also taken into account.Generally,surfactant induced wettability alteration for enhanced oil recovery is still in the stage of laboratory investigation.The successful application of this technique relies on a comprehensive survey of target reservoir conditions,and could be expected especially in low permeability fractured reservoirs and forced imbibition process.

The effect of Ca 2+ on the removal of Alexandrium sp. LC3 under HDTMAB stress was investigated. The results showed that the toxic effect of HDTMAB on Alexandrium sp. LC3 was significantly reduced in the presence of Ca 2+, especially under 4 mmol/L of Ca 2+. To understand the underlying mechanism, the SH group and MDA content of the cell membrane and membrane permeability were measured. It was found that the SH content of cell member increased, the MDA content and membrane permeability decreased when Alexandrium sp. was treated with Ca 2+ and HDTMAB complex, compared with using HDTMAB only. The data suggested that Ca 2+ might promote HDTMAB stress resistance of Alexandrium sp. LC3 by reducing the permeability and increasing the stability of cell membrane.

With the rapid growth in electronic device performance,there has been an increasing demand for thermally conductive polymer composites to handle the thermal management issue,thus contributing to the great importance to develop the graphene framework,which is evaluated as the most promising reinforcements for enhancing the thermal conductivity of polymer.Vacuum filtration is a common method to fabricate graphene framework,whereas,it is available to prepare a framework with centimeter-scale thickness by filtrating the graphene-water dispersion,due to the fact of sample cracking caused by the mismatch of surface tension between graphene and water.In this work,a surfactantassisted strategy was proposed by adjusting the surface tension of the water close to that of graphene first,then performing a conventional filtration process,to fabricate graphene framework.As a result,a thick graphene framework(thickness:3 cm)was successfully prepared,and after embedding into epoxy,the framework endows the composite(13.6 wt%)with a high in-plane thermal conductivities of12.4 W/mK,which is equivalent to≈64 times higher than that of neat epoxy.Our method is simple and compatible with the conventional filtration process,suggesting great potential for the mass-production of graphene framework to meet the practical application requirements.

Enhanced Oil Recovery(EOR)processes aim at increasing the performance and operative life of oilfields while newer,greener and more efficient energy sources are developed.Among the chemical EOR techniques,surfactant flooding is one of the most well-known methods,applied mainly in low-and medium-viscosity oilfields.surfactants diminish the interfacial energy between the oleous and aqueous phases,reducing the forces responsible of the capillary trapping phenomenon and mobilizing the remaining oil.This paper presents the study of a novel two-dimensional surfactant flooding simulator for a four-component(water,petroleum,chemical,salt),two-phase(aqueous,oleous)system in porous media.It is aimed mainly at discussing the influence of the physical phenomena present in the reservoir during the recovery,namely:rock compressibility,diffusion,capillary pressure and adsorption.The system is numerically solved using a second-order finite difference method using the IMPEC(IMplicit Pressure and Explicit Concentration)scheme.The oil recovery factor was negatively affected when these phenomena were considered,being strongly sensitive to the adsorption.The other phenomena decreased the efficiency of the process to a lesser extent,whilst the capillary pressure did not affect significantly the flooding performance.The presence of salt in the reservoir rendered the adsorption process more relevant,with water-in-oil emulsions being more sensitive to the presence of this fourth component.This paper shows the importance of the design and optimization of chemical agents to be used in EOR before its field application.

Based on the features of surfactant flooding, a mathematical model for surfactant flooding is established. The adsorption-retentlon, convection diffusion of surfactant and influence of concentration change upon relative permeability curve are included in the model. The novel description of adsorption quantity of surfaetant and relative permeability curve are presented, which enhance the coincidence between mathematical model and field practice, the relative errors of main development indexes arc within 6%. The model is applied to the numerical research of the surfactant flooding in the untabulated beds of Xingl-3 surfactant flooding pilot site of No. 4 Oil Production Company of Daqing Oilfield, the influences of surfaetant concentration, injection quantity, slug combination mode upon the development effect and economic benefit are quantitatively analyzed, the injection scheme is optimized as follows： surfaetant concentration is 0.5%, slug volume is 0.02 PV, slug combination mode is 2 slugs. After the implementation of scheme in oilfield, the cumulative increase of oil is 2186.0 t, up to nearly 30%.

Accelerating leaching of copper ore with surfactant and the analysis of reaction kinetics

To solve the problem of low permeability and lower extraction rates of high-mud ores, a surfactant was added as a penetrant to the pregnant leaching solution during column leaching tests. On the basis of the theories of physical chemistry and seepage flow mechanics, the mechanism by which seepage is enhanced under the effects of the surfactant was analyzed. The results show that the action modes of the surfactant were divided into four aspects: changing the wettability of the ore, reducing the viscosity of the leaching solution, adsorbing onto the surface of ore, and enhancing the permeability effect. The findings of column leaching tests demonstrated that permeability was substantially improved by the surfactant. In the later period of leaching, the permeability coefficient was two times higher than that of the control group. Meanwhile, the ore extraction rate increased by approximately 10%. During the leaching process, the surface tension of the solution did not substantially change, and that of the solution with surfactant increased slightly. The kinetics analysis of ore column leaching illustrated that the leaching processes were controlled by both internal diffusion(principal factor) and chemical reaction.

SSZ-39 zeolite with AEI framework structure is a good catalyst candidate for the methanol-to-olefins(MTO)reaction.However,the diffusion limitation and coke formation often results in fast deactivation of the SSZ-39 zeolite catalyst.One solution for this challenge is to introduce mesoporosity in the SSZ-39 zeolite.Herein,we report the synthesis of mesoporous SSZ-39 zeolite using an organosilane surfactant,,-dimethyl--(3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl)octan-1-aminium chloride,as a mesopore template and,-dimethyl--2,6-dimethylpiperidinium as a micropore template.The obtained zeolites were characterized by X-ray diffraction,N sorption,scanning electron microscopy,temperature programmed desorption of ammonia,and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance of Al.The results show that the mesoporous SSZ-39 zeolite has high crystallinity,meso/microporosity,high surface area,cuboid morphology,and abundant acidic sites.More importantly,this mesoporous SSZ-39 zeolite exhibits enhanced catalyst lifetime in the MTO reaction due to the presence of mesoporosity for fast mass transfer,compared with a conventional SSZ-39 zeolite without mesoporosity.
