Short-Term Impact of Elemental sulfur on Cranberry Nutrition and Crop Performance

Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) is an ammophilous plant grown on acid soils (pH 4.0 - 5.5). Elemental sulfur is commonly applied at a recommended rate of 1120 kg S ha−1 per pH unit to acidify cranberry soils, potentially impacting the plant mineral nutrition. The general recommendation may not fit all conditions encountered in the field. Our objective was to develop an equation to predict the sulfur requirement to reach pHwater of 4.2 to tackle nitrification in acidic cranberry soils varying in initial pH values, and to measure the effect of elemental sulfur on the mineral nutrition and the performance of cranberry crops. A 3-yr experiment was designed to test the effect of elemental sulfur on soil and tissue tests and on berry yield and quality. Four S treatments (0, 250, 500 and 1000 kg S ha−1) were established on three duplicated sites during two consecutive years. We ran soil, foliar tissue, berry tissue tests, and measured berry yield, size, anthocyanin content (TAcy), Brix, and firmness. Nutrients were expressed as centered log ratios to reflect nutrient interactions. Results were analyzed using a mixed model. Soil Ca decreased while soil Mn and S increased significantly (p ≤ 0.05). sulfur showed no significant effects on nutrient balances in uprights. The S impacted negatively berry B balance, and positively berry Mn and S balances. A linear regression model relating pH change to S dosage and elapsed time (R2 = 0.53) showed that to reach pHwater of 4.2 two years after S application, 250 - 1000 kg S ha−1 could be applied depending on initial soil pH value. The stratification of surface-applied elemental S in the soil profile should be further examined in relation to plant rooting and nutrient leaching.

Volume expansion and polysulfide shuttle effect are the main barriers for the commercialization of lithium-sulfur(Li-S) battery.In this work,we in-situ polymerized a cross-linked binder in sulfur cathode to solve the aforementioned problems using a facile method under mild conditions.Polycarbonate diol(PCDL),triethanolamine(TEA) and hexamethylene diisocyanate(HDI) were chosen as precursors to prepare the cross-linked binder.The in-situ polymerized binder(PTH) builds a strong network in sulfur cathode,which could restrain the volume expansion of sulfu r.Moreover,by adopting functional groups of oxygen atoms and nitrogen atoms,the binder could effectively facilitate transportation of Li-ion and adsorb polysulfide chemically.The Li-S battery with bare sulfur and carbon/sulfur composite cathodes and cross-linked PTH binder displays much better electrochemical performance than that of the battery with PVDF.The PTH-bare S cathode with a mass loading of 5.97 mg/cm^2 could deliver a capacity of 733.3 mAh/g at 0.2 C,and remained 585.5 mAh/g after 100 cycles.This in-situ polymerized binder is proved to be quite effective on restraining the volume expansion and suppressing polysulfide shuttle effect,then improving the electrochemical performance of Li-S battery.

The diffusion property of sulfur on the soda-lime-silicate float glass surface was studied by using secondary ion mass spectroscopy（SIMS）.According to the Fick＇s Second Law,two models of diffusion of sulfur on the glass surface were built.When the diffusion of sulfate（S^6＋） is considered uniquely,the concentration-depth profile of sulfur can not be fitted very well,especially on the top surfaces of the air side and tin side of float glass.So the diffusion of sulfide（S^2-） on the profile of sulfur can not be ignored.The concentration-depth profile of sulfur on both sides of glass can be fitted more exactly when both S^6＋ and S^2- are considerd.Based on the above-mentioned fitting results,it is concluded that the diffusion coefficents of S^6＋ and S^2- of tin side are larger than those of the air side.Moreover,the diffusion coefficents are related to the contacted medium.

A growing demand for utilizing biotransformation to improve the or-ganoleptic profile of beer has changed the way hop-forward beer recipes are approached.While the analysis of terpene biotransformation has been well documented,there remains a gap in knowledge in sulfur com-pounds due to their extremely low concentrations(sometimes in concentrations of parts per trillion)and high volatility.Analysis of sulfur compounds requires precise and sensitive analytical methodology to detect them.While sulfur compounds have been successfully detected using gas chromatography mass spectrometry(GC-MS),a pulsed flame photometric detector,and a GC sulfur chemiluminescence detector(GC-SCD),the research presented here utilizes a GC-SCD via a stir bar sorptive extraction methodology previously used to track aroma in-tensities in optimizing harvest picking windows.This work shows an identification of 10o thiol and sulfur compounds found in both un-hopped and hopped wort(with Amarillo,Cashmere,Idaho-grown Saaz,and Czech Saaz)and tracks them through the fermentation pro-cess,confirming the volatility of some thiols and most notably the presence of 4-methyl-4-mercaptopentan-2-one in the final beer at a retention time of 9.5 min,a compound that contributes a catty,blackcurrant/Sauvignon Blanc aroma character.Differences in hop varieties were compared with an American ale yeast,and the effect of yeast strain as well as temperature on thiol production with vGxPo1 was compared between an American ale,German lager,Belgian saison,and Brettano-myces bruxellensis strain.

5 heats of GCr15 bearing steel of different sulfur contents ranging from 0.009-0.092% （wt.）were smelted. The role of sulfur in bearing steel and its effect on contact fatigue properties andfracture toughness KICWere studied. It was shown that as the sulfur content increases the sulfur content dissolved in the steelsubstrate remains unchanged. The best contact fatigue property appears at the sulfur content of0.045% （wt.）, and the influence of sulfur content on the fracture toughness of bearing steel is notobvious. Finally, the mechanism of the role of sulfur was investigated.

The role of sulfur in the pyrolysis of kerogen

sulfur plays an important role in the generation and evolution of hydrocarbon from organic matter. Here, a pyrolysis experiment in closed system was performed on Maoming oil shales kerogen (Type Ⅰ), Maoming oil shales kerogen added with sulfur ether and Maoming oil shales kerogen added with sulphur. The results suggest that the existence of sulfur can result in: (i) higher yield of hydrocarbons generated from the kerogen; (ii) decrease of the temperature for the maximum generation of heavy hydrocarbons (the C15+ fraction) by 20℃; (iii) decrease of the temperature for the maximum generation of the aromatics fraction by 40℃, and (iv) acceleration of the aromatization process. The pyrolysates from kerogen added with sulfur are similar to the heating products of the sulfur-rich kerogen as reported in the literatures. It seems that the sulfur catalysis is also an important factor that can make the sulfur-rich kerogen generate low-mature oil at the earlier diagenesis stage, except for the weakness of the C-

Distribution Characteristics of sulfur and the Main Harmful Trace Elements in China's Coal

To promote the rational development and use of clean coal resources in China, data on the regional and age distribution of sulfur, arsenic and other harmful elements in Chinese coal was broadly collected, tested for content, and analyzed. Coal in northwestern China is characterized by low to extremely low levels of sulfur; the coal of the Taiyuan Formation in northern China mainly has high-sulfur content; that of the Shanxi Formation is mainly characterized by low sulfur coal; and the Late Permian coal in southern China has overall higher sulfur content; other regions have low sulfur coal. The average content of harmful trace elements in the bulk of China＇s coal is similar to the corresponding content in the coal of the North America and the rest of the world, whereas the content of various elements （Hg, Sb and Se） is different in magnitude to the corresponding percentage in the crust. The average content of the elements Cr, Se, Co, Be, U, Br in Late Permian coal in S China ranks first in the country whereas the average content of Hg and CI in the coals of Late Carboniferous to Early Permian age in N China are the highest. The average content of Mn in Early and Middle Jurassic coal is higher in NW China. The high content of harmful elements in some coal should cause particular concern both in the development and utilization of coal.
