An ion exchanger was prepared by sulfonation of cork-waste chars. The exchange properties of the resultant material were characterized using Na+, Ca2+ or Fe3+ aqueous solutions. The content of metal ions in the solutions were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. On the basis of the results obtained, the chemical equilibrium and its thermodynamic aspects related to the ion exchange process were studied. It was found that equilibrium constant K varies by the order: Na+0 and △5°>0, with -△G° following the sequence: Ca2+>Na+>Fe3+.

A new ion exchange membrane based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and sulfonated poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) was prepared by in-situ polymerization. The incorporation of sulfonic groups into the polyvinylidene fluoride composite membrane was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy (IR), ion exchange capacity (IEC) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). Area resistance, IEC and water uptake of the treated membrane were evaluated. When 20% of the crosslinked membrane was sulfonated at 80degreesC for 22 h, the PVDF ion exchange membrane can attain 0.8 Omega . cm(2) area resistance in NaCl aqueous solution at 25degreesC, IEC is as high as 2.43 millimoles per grain of the wet membrane. The hydrophilicity of PVDF membrane is also significantly improved after treatment. When 60% of crosslinked membrane was sulfonated at 80degreesC for 6 h, water uptake of the treated membrane can attain 64.7%.

A novel approach is designed to optimize the synthesis of sulfonic-functionalized silica material. Results from 29Si and 27AI NMR suggest that the AI acts as the bridging atom connecting the methanesulfonate and silica matrix. Further pyridine-FTIR spectra followed by catalytic activity tests demonstrate that compared with previous methods, our new approach results in higher Lewis acid site concentration, higher thermal stability and superior catalytic activity. Moreover, the whole catalysis preparation procedure is environmentally friendly. Specifically, the silica matrix is synthesized through hydrolysis of tetrae- thylorthosilicate employing formic acid as hydro-catalyst, in which no surfactant species or precursors were involved.

The development of a benign environmental catalyst for the generation of biodiesel is an area of importance to reduce the overall usage of fossil fuels. In the current work, biochar was produced by slow pyrolysis of Irul wood sawdust. The optimization for biochar generation was carried out for different reaction temperatures and heating durations. The biochar was used to prepare solid acid catalysts by sulfonation process. The characterization of biochar and the sulfonated catalyst were carried out using Elemental analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), Powder X-ray Diffraction(XRD), Thermo Gravimetric Analysis(TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and Surface area analyzer(BET). The characterization results showed that sulfonation of biochar resulted in biochar based solid acid catalyst containing various functional acidic groups like weak acidic\\OH groups, strong acidic\\COOH and SO3 H groups. The total acid density and sulfonic acid group density of catalyst were estimated and showed excellent acidic sites concentration which gives a good catalytic activity for biodiesel production through simultaneous esterification and transesterification. The enhanced catalytic activity is due to the high acid density of SO3 H groups and the reactant accessibility towards acidic sites as well as the strong affinity between the hydrophilic reactants and the neutral OH groups which are bonded with the polycyclic aromatic carbon rings. The performance of biochar catalyst for the production of biodiesel was evaluated by comparing the yield obtained. The FTIR and Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectroscopy(GC–MS) were also carried out for the analysis of biodiesel produced.

With the application of HIGEE process intensification technology, petroleum sulfonate surfactant used for enhanced oil recovery was synthesized from petroleum fraction of Shengli crude oil with three sulfonating agents, including diluted liquid sulfur trioxide, diluted gaseous sulfur trioxide and fuming sulfuric acid. For each sulfonating agent, different operation modes (liquid-liquid or gas-liquid reaction with semi-continuous or continuous operation) were applied. The effects of various experimental conditions, such as solvent/oil mass ratio, sulfonating agent/oil mass ratio, gas/liquid ratio, gas concentration, reaction temperature, rotating speed, circulation ratio, reaction time and aging time, on the content of active matter and unsulfonated oil were investigated. Under relatively optimal reaction conditions, the target product was prepared with high mass content of active matter (up to 45.3%) and extremely low oil/water interfacial tension (4.5×10 –3 mN·m –1 ). The product quality and process efficiency are higher compared with traditional sulfonation technology.

Sulfonated syndiotactic polystyrene ionomers (SsPS) with 1.8 mol% degree of sulfonation have been studied. WAXD shows that the crystallinity of SsPS ionomers was decreased with increasing diameter size of the counter ions and sPS > SsPS-H > SsPS-K > SsPS-Zn. Moreover, SsPS ionomers only have alpha crystal form, while original sPS has two crystal forms: alpha and beta crystal form. TGA shows that the thermal stability of SsPS ionomers is higher than that of the original sPS and SsPS-Zn > SsPS-K > SsPS-H. DSC shows that all the glass transition temperatures (T-g) of SsPS ionomers are higher than that of the neat sPS and SsPS-Zn > SsPS-Na > SsPS-K > SsPS-H. However, the melting temperature (T-m) and crystallization peak temperature (T-p) of SsPS ionomers are lower and SsPS-H > SsPS-Zn > SsPS-K > SsPS-Na, while the crystallinity (X-c) of SsPS-Zn is the lowest. Nonisothermal crystallization kinetics shows that the Avrami index of sPS and SsPS-H are both about 4, suggesting the nucleation growth of SsPS-H with lower degree of sulfonation still keeps its three-dimension form. FTIR spectra of SsPS ionomers show a splitting absorption band for asymmetric stretching vibration of sulfonation group. The CH in-plane bending vibration of benzene ring shifted to higher wavenumber and the symmetric stretching vibration of sulfonation group changed slightly with different counter ion neutralized SsPS ionomers.

In order to improve the proton conductivity of hollow silica spheres （HSS）/perfluorosulfonic acid ion-exchange （PFSA） composite membranes as proton exchange membrane,sulfonic acid groups were grafted onto the surfaces of HSS via post grafting *** images and FT-IR spectra of the obtained sulfonic acid groups modified hollow silica spheres （SAMHSS） illustrated that the sulfonic acid groups were successfully grafted onto the surfaces of *** uptake and swelling degree of SAMHSS/PFSA composite membranes were found much higher than those of HSS/PFSA membranes due to the introduction of hydrophilic sulfonic acid *** a range from 50 ℃ to 130 ℃,the highest conductivity of composite membranes was obtained when 5 wt% SAMHSS was *** maximum conductivity reached 7.5×10-2 S·cm-1 at 100 ℃ and 100% relative humidity,even the temperature increased to 130 ℃,the conductivity of composite membranes with 5 wt% SAMHSS could reach 3.7×10-2 S·cm-1 at 100 % relative humidity,while the conductivity of the recast PFSA was only 2.2×10-3 S·cm-1.

1, 2-Diliydro-4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)(2H)phthalazin-1-one(DHPZ) was sulfonated in concentrated Sulfuric acid. Poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) containing pendant sodium sulfonate group was synthesized from sulfonated and pure 1,2-dihydro-4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)(2H)phthalazin-1-one, and 4,4'-difluorodiphenylketone. The sulfonated monomer and sulfonated polymer were characterized with FT-IR and H-1-NMR.
