In Search of“Voices”:Linguistic Choice and Construction of subjectivity in Lu Xun’s Early Translations and Writings

Unlike Hu Shih and Chen Duxiu,among other leading intellectuals in the May Fourth New Literature Movement,Lu Xun had no experience of writing in vernacular Chinese(baihua)in his early years.Except Jules Verne’s two novels translated by Lu Xun in the 1900s,all his translations and writings before 1918 were produced in classical Chinese(wenyan),until“Diary of a Madman”(Kuangren riji)was published in May 1918.Despite the well-known fact that Lu Xun wrote his first vernacular fiction at the quest of Qian Xuantong,the sudden and seemingly effortless change in Lu Xun's linguistic choice remains a mystery.This article attempts to shed new light on the problem by focusing on Lu Xun’s understanding and practice of voices(sheng)in his early works.First,I explore the meaning of the term"voices of the heart"(xinsheng)in Lu Xun's thoughts and connect it to the rendering of subjectivity in his writings and translations in the late Qing dynasty.The archaic style he chose implies,paradoxically,both his effort to deliver inner"voices of the heart"and his self-awareness of the difficulty in conveying it.Then along this line,I try to grasp Lu Xun;s intrinsic motivation for the change in his linguistic choice.Vernacular Chinese provided Lu Xun with a channel of constructing inter-subjectivity by appealing to a broad public,thus emancipating him from the dilemma of expressing“voices of the heart.”Throughout the first two decades of the twentieth century,Lu Xun's perception and application of written language were closely interwoven with his concern for subjectivity.

Construction of Female subjectivity in the Yan’an Period under the Intersubjective Perspective

In the practice of intersubjective ideological education,human subjectivity can be fully developed in three dimensions:practical dimension,value dimension and social dimension,thus improving the effectiveness of ideological education.Liberation Daily in the Yan’an period is an important carrier for the Chinese Communist Party to carry out the ideological education of women.Taking the reports on women’s work in Liberation Daily as samples,this paper analyzes the construction of female subjectivity in Yan’an from the perspective of intersubjective ideological education.Development is conducive to deepening the study of the effectiveness of the ideological education of women,and it also has practical significance for deepening the party’s women work.

Cultivation of Cultural subjectivity from the Perspective of Cultural Self-Confidence

Economic and cultural globalization has strong impacts on the culture of each country.How to maintain the integrity of the local culture in the course of globalization and how to develop on the basis of the inheritance and innovation are the questions worthy of being studied.This paper firstly expounds the important meaning of cultural subjectivity in the view of cultural self-confidence,then explores the roots for the loss of cultural subjectivity consciousness and finally indicates the strategies of cultivating cultural subjectivity.Cultivating cultural subjectivity is an effective way to maintain the integrity of the local culture and the cultural self-confidence.

Introduction to the Special Topic on ＂Subjects and subjectivity in the Era of Neoliberal Globalization＂

Before Citizen:Lyric subjectivity and the Language of Experience in Claudia Rankine’s Nothing in Nature is Private

This essay analyzes Claudia Rankine’s first book,Nothing in Nature is Private,showing that although the book is formally dissimilar to her later work,it includes themes that continue to be foundational to her writing practice.From the title of the first poem,“American Light,”in this first book,to the subtitle of her two most recent books of poetry(“An American Lyric”)Rankine has dwelt in the history and multiple meanings of the“American.”Nothing in Nature is Private allows us to deeply consider a black female subject’s relationship to the American landscape,history,and literary lineages.Moreover,this analysis enlarges debates both about how subjectivity is framed and how it is related to poetic form.

基于“三域”理论的结果连词主观性研究

文章基于“三域”理论，对汉语中6个常用因果连词的使用域进行统计，考察其主观性大小，结果为：“可见”＞“所以”＞“因此/因而”＞“于是”＞“结果”，并发现连词主观性大小对句子的认知和合法性会产生影响。其次，发现零形式标记比显性标记使用频繁，常用于“非意愿性行域”“非因果知域”和“言域”。研究结果有助于汉语教学中对结果连词使用域的解释和结果连词的区分。

Gaze and Oppositional Gaze: On Sethe's subjectivity Construction in Beloved

Beloved is generally considered as one of the most accomplished and renowned works by Toni Morrison.In Beloved,Sethe is constantly under the gaze of whites and is reduced to the Other situated at the bottom of the power structure of society.Under the school teacher's disdainful gaze,she becomes the Other between animal and human and loses her subjectivity.Under Amy's sympathetic gaze,Sethes feels ashamed of her status as a black woman and falls into identity crisis.However,Sethe struggles to resist whites' oppression and reconstruct her subjectivity through the oppositional gaze.The reversal of the subject and object of the gaze exposes the cruelty and inhumanity of slavery and deconstructs the binary opposition between blacks and whites.

A Survey of Engagement, subjectivity and Inter-subjectivity

Engagement and subjectivity focus on the non-propositional meaning of discourse, and inter-subjectivity is concerned with the relationship between a writer/speaker and his potential readers/addressees. This article first introduces the definitions of engagement, subjectivity and inter-subjectivity, and then attempts to discuss the relationships among them. The analysis shows that subjectivity and inter-subjectivity are closely related and that the process of engagement is an interaction of speaking subject and his/her potential readers and social behavior of inter-subjectivity and social practice as well.
