Litter Dynamics of Three subalpine forests in Western Sichuan

Litter production, components and dynamics were investigated and forest floor litter was quantified throughout awhole year in three subalpine forests, dominated by tree species of spruce (SF), fir (FF) and birch (BF), in WesternSichuan, China, in order to understand the key factors that influenced litter production and dynamics. Litterfall in thethree forests consisted mainly of leaves, woody litter, reproductive organs and moss. Contribution of leaf litter to thetotal litterfall was significantly (P < 0.05) greater than that of woody litter, reproductive organs or moss. Regardlessof the stands, litterfall exhibited a marked monthly variation with the maximum litterfall peaks occurring in October,with smaller peaks occurring in February for SF and FF, and May for BF. The analysis indicated that tree species,stand density, leaf area index (LAI), stand basal area and stand age were the key factors determining litter *** tree species and phenology controlled the litter dynamics, with wind and snow modifying the litter componentsand dynamics.

Stem CO_(2) efflux of Abies fabri in subalpine forests in the Gongga Mountains,Eastern Tibetan Plateau

Aims Despite the importance of stem cO_(2)efflux(Es)in ecosystem carbon cycling and energy balance,little is known about temporal variation in the temperature coefficient(Q10)and sapwood nitrogen concen-trations([N])and their intrinsic links with *** objectives of this study were:(i)to examine the response of Es to temperature in a subalpine region and(ii)to explore the influence of stem diameter and[N]on ***,we will test the hypothesis that(i)Es in trees has thermal acclimation and(ii)Es will be well correlated with diameter at breast height(DBH)and[N].Methods Here,a horizontally oriented soil chamber technique was applied to measure Es of Abies fabri in two subalpine forest stands in Southwestern china from May to December *** also exam-ined the variability in Es,Q10 and[N]in trees and monitored the relationship between temperature,[N],DBH and *** Findings During the measurement period,Es showed an apparent seasonal trend,following the change in air temperature,increasing from May and peaking in July,then continuously decreasing until *** mean Es for the growing and dormant seasons were 1.45 and 0.25μmol·m^(−2)·s^(−1),respectively,and Es in the mature forest was sig-nificantly higher than in the immature *** area-based Es was positively correlated with DBH and sapwood width(SW),while volume-based Es showed negative relationship with DBH and *** the five diameter classes,69.8-89.0%of the variation in Es could be explained by air *** temperature sensitiv-ity(Q10)of Es ranged from 2.98 to 5.61 during the measurement period,with a higher Q10 appearing in the growing season than in the dormant *** was a significant linear relationship(P<0.01)between[N]and Es(expressed based on two different units).Additionally,exponential models of Es against[N]and air temperature were applied to estimate Es.

Assessing Post-Storm Forest Dynamics in the Pyrenees Using High-Resolution LIDAR Data and Aerial Photographs

We evaluated how historical storm events have shaped the current forest landscape in three Pyrenean subalpine forests(NE Spain).For this purpose we related forest damage estimations obtained from multi-temporal aerial photographic comparisons to the current forest typology generated from airborne Li DAR data, and we examined the role of past natural disturbance on the current spatial distribution of forest structural *** found six forest structural types in the landscape: early regeneration(T1 and T2), young even-aged stands(T3), uneven-aged stands(T4) and adult stands(T5and T6).All of the types were related to the timing and severity of past storms, with early-regeneration structures being found in areas markedly affected in recent times, and adult stands predominating in those areas that had suffered lowest damage levels within the study *** general, landscapes where high or medium levels of damage were recurrent also presented higher levels of spatial heterogeneity,whereas the opposite pattern was found in the less markedly affected landscape, characterized by thepresence of large regular *** results show the critical role that storm regimes in terms of timing and severity of past storms can play in shaping current forest structure and future dynamics in subalpine *** knowledge gained could be used to help define alternative forest management strategies oriented toward the enhancement of landscape heterogeneity as a measure to face future environmental uncertainty.

How to accurately simulate the distribution of forest species based upon their biological attributes has been a traditional biogeographical *** gap models are very useful tools for examining the dynamics of forest succession and revealing the species structure of *** the present study,the GFSM(Gongga Forest Succession Model) was developed and applied to simulate the distribution,composition and succession process of forests in 100 m elevation *** results indicate that the simulated results of the tree species,quantities of the different types of trees,tree age and differences in DBH(diameter at breast height) composition were in line with the actual situation from 1400 to 3700 MASL(meters above sea level) on the eastern slope of ***,the dominant species in the simulated results were the same as those in the surveyed ***,the GFSM model can best simulate the features of forest dynamics and structure in the natural conditions of *** work provides a new approach to studying the structure and distribution characteristics of mountain ecosystems in varied ***,the results of this study suggest that the biogeochemistry mechanism model should be combined with the forestsuccession model to facilitate the ecological model in simulating the physical and chemical processes involved.
