Monitoring and detection of steel bridge diseases:A review

Finite element model updating of existing steel bridge based on structural health monitoring

Based on the physical meaning of sensitivity,a new finite element(FE) model updating method was proposed. In this method,a three-dimensional FE model of the Nanjing Yangtze River bridge(NYRB) with ANSYS program was established and updated by modifying some design parameters. To further validate the updated FE model,the analytical stress-time histories responses of main members induced by a moving train were compared with the measured ones. The results show that the relative error of maximum stress is 2.49% and the minimum relative coefficient of analytical stress-time histories responses is 0.793. The updated model has a good agreement between the calculated data and the tested data,and provides a current baseline FE model for long-term health monitoring and condition assessment of the NYRB. At the same time,the model is validated by stress-time histories responses to be feasible and practical for railway steel bridge model updating.

Value of Charpy impact test results with sub-and half-size specimens extracted from overage steel bridge members

For the maintenance of steel bridges,the mechanical properties of steel used in the bridges must be *** enough dimensions of specimens cannot be extracted from the actual members,miniaturized specimens are used for *** the case of the Charpy impact test,sub-and half-size specimens are specified instead of full-size specimens of which the thickness is 10 *** value of absorbed energy and energy transient temperature obtained by Charpy impact tests with sub-size and half-size specimens were investigated from the viewpoint of maintenance of bridges in this *** absorbed energy was not in proportion to the thickness of specimens of steel used in the actual overage *** tendency of energy transient temperature obtained by thin specimens of the overage steel differed from that of the present steel.A method for evaluating the performance against brittle fracture occurrence based on the WES3003 criterion was *** results show the significance of evaluation based on the energy transient temperature for reasonable maintenance of bridges.

Research on heavy-haul adaptive technology and strengthening measures for existing railway steel bridge

Purpose–This research addresses the diverse characteristics of existing railway steel bridges in China,including variations in construction age,design standards,structural types,manufacturing processes,materials and service *** also focuses on prominent defects and challenges related to heavy transportation conditions,particularly low live haul reserves and severe fatigue ***/methodology/approach–The study encompasses three key aspects:(1)Adaptability assessment:It begins with assessing the suitability of existing railway steel bridges for heavy-haul operations through comprehensive analyses,experiments and engineering applications.(2)Strengthening:To combat frequent crack defects in the vertical stiffener end structure of girder webs,fatigue performance tests and reinforcement scheme experiments were *** experiments included the development of a hot-spot stress S-N curve for this structure,validating the effectiveness of methods like crack stop holes,ultrasonic hammering and flange angle steel.(3)Service life extension:Research on the cruciform welded joint structure(non-fusion transfer type)focused on fatigue performance over the long life *** led to the establishment of a fatigue S-N curve,enhancing Chinese design ***–The research achieved several significant outcomes:(1)Successful implementation of strengthening and retrofitting measures on a 64-m single-span double-track railway steel truss girder on an existing heavy-duty line.(2)Post-reinforcement,a substantial 26%to 32%reduction in live haul stress on bridge members was achieved.(3)The strengthening and retrofitting efforts met design expectations,enabling the bridge to accommodate vehicles with a 30-ton axle haul on the railway ***/value–This research systematically tackles challenges and defects associated with Chinese existing railway steel bridges,providing valuable insights into adaptability assessment,strengthening techniques and service

This study is concerned with the diagnosis of discrepancies in a steel truss bridge by identifying dynamic properties from the vibration response signals of the *** vibration response signals collected at bridges under three different vehicular speeds of 10 km/hr,20 km/hr,and 30 km/hr are analyzed using statistical features such as kurtosis,magnitude of peak-to-peak,root mean square,crest factor as well as impulse factor in time domain,and Stockwell transform in the time-frequency *** considered statistical features except for kurtosis show uncertain *** Stockwell transform showed low-resolution outcomes when the presence of noise in the recorded vibration *** elimination of noise and extraction of meaningful dynamic properties from the vibration responses is done by applying a new method which comes from the fusion of Hilbert transform with Spectral kurtosis and bandpass *** outcomes obtained from Hilbert transform processed residual signals which are further filtered using bandpass filter show more robustness and accuracy in characterizing bridge modal frequencies from the noisy vibration *** proposed method produces a high-resolution frequency response which can unveil the joint discrepancy in the bridge structure.

＜正＞ X-ray radiographic testing was carried out for the welds of steel plate that is 10 mm in thickness and used in constructing the sky walk. 37 welding specimens from 7 strips of the welds that picked randomly from a batch of welds in field were tested. The energy of X-ray radiation was 170 kV and 5 mA, and the exposure time was 2 minutes at FFD （focus to film distance） of 75 cm. The testing method is introduced, and the characteristics of welding images obtained from X-ray radiography are compared. The results show that the appearance of faulty welds are multiplicity, and their main defects exhibited the behaviors with cold solder joint, missing welding brokenly, dross, dirt inclusions, pinhole, air bubble etc. According to the properties and amount of the welding defects, they can be divided into four levels with A, B, C and D. The distribution of welds with different defect level and properties are given for evaluating the acceptable defect level of the welds of steel bridge.

Controlling deflection of long steel I-shaped girder bridge using two V-shaped pre-tensioning cables

Despite appropriate design of girder under bending and shear,the deflection of long steel girders usually exceeds the allowable range,and therefore the structural designers encounter challenges in this *** significant features of the cables,namely,low weight,small cross section,and high tensile strength,they are used in this research so as to control the deflection of long girder bridges,rather than increasing their *** this study,theoretical relations are developed to calculate the increase in pre-tensioning force of V-shaped steel cables under external loading as well as the deflection of steel girder bridges with V-shaped cables and different support *** verify the theoretical relations,the steel girder bridge is modeled in the finite element ABAQUS software with different support conditions without cable and with V-shaped *** obtained results show that the theoretical relations can appropriately predict the deflection of girder bridge with V-shaped cables and different support *** this study,the effects of the distance from support on the deflection of mid span are studied in both simply supported and fixed supported girder bridge so as to obtain the appropriate distance from support causing the minimum deflection.

Statistical determination of significant curved I-girder bridge seismic response parameters

Curved steel bridges are commonly used at interchanges in transportation networks and more of these structures continue to be designed and built in the United States. Though the use of these bridges continues to increase in locations that experience high seismicity, the effects of curvature and other parameters on their seismic behaviors have been neglected in current risk assessment tools. These tools can evaluate the seismic vulnerability of a transportation network using fragility curves. One critical component of fragility curve development for curved steel bridges is the completion of sensitivity analyses that help identify influential parameters related to their seismic response. In this study, an accessible inventory of existing curved steel girder bridges located primarily in the Mid-Atlantic United States （MAUS） was used to establish statistical characteristics used as inputs for a seismic sensitivity study. Critical seismic response quantities were captured using 3D nonlinear finite element models. Influential parameters from these quantities were identified using statistical tools that incorporate experimental Plackett-Burman Design （PBD）, which included Pareto optimal plots and prediction profiler techniques. The findings revealed that the potential variation in the influential parameters included number of spans, radius of curvature, maximum span length, girder spacing, and cross-frame spacing. These parameters showed varying levels of influence on the critical bridge response.

Condition survey and analysis of epoxy asphalt concrete pavement on Second Nanjing Yangtze River bridge:a ten-year review

To obtain a complete picture of the epoxy asphalt pavement condition on the Second Nanjing Yangtze River bridge, an on-site survey is conducted to collect information regarding traffic composition and extents of pavement distresses. The survey shows that 30 m2 out of the entire 3.8 × 104 m2 pavement exhibits potholes and alligator cracks. Other surface cracks are also found, including regular longitudinal cracks, short hairline cracks, bubble cracks, and ring cracks. Rutting and shoving are not observed on the pavement. The causes of pavement distresses are discussed by analyzing the pavement mechanical response with actual traffic composition. Research results indicate that the regular longitudinal cracks occurring at ribs near wheelpaths are due to fatigue damage. Short hair cracking and bubble cracking are mainly related to construction defects. Alligator cracks are the results of the development of regular, short hair and bubble cracks lacking effective maintenance. Potholes are induced by the cracking and moisture ingression.
