Currently, curing spinal cord injury （SCI） is one of the most difficult problems worldwide. Olfactory ensheathing cell transplantation （OECT） is a putative new treatment. This bibliometric analysis was based on the Science Citation Index and conducted to demonstrate global research on OECT for SCI. Searches of the Institute of Scientific Information Web of Science used the Key words "olfactory ensheathing cells", "OECs", "olfactory ensheathing glia", "OEG", "olfactory ensheathing glia cells" or "OEGs" and "spinal cord injury", "SCI", "spinal injury" or "spinal transaction" limiting publication from 1985 to May 2012. Analyses were performed using analysis functions from the Web of Science data and statistics in Microsoft Excel. All selected literature was evaluated in the following aspects: Publication Year, Document Type, Language, Authors, Institutions, Times Cited, Web of Science Category, Source Title, Country/Territory and Funding Agencies. The earliest literature record was April 1995, and 414 articles addressing OECT for SCI were added to the data library in the past 18 years with an annually increasing trend. Of 415 records, 405 were in English. There were 259 articles ranked by document type, among which 10 articles are regarded as classic references. Ten core source titles published 143 articles （34.5% of 415）. The journal Experimental Neurology published the most literature （32 records） followed by Glia. The United States published the most articles, followed by China. In addition, Yale University was the most productive institution in the OECT for SCI field. Experimental Neurology published the most OECT literature in America, while Neural Regeneration Research published the most in China. This analysis demonstrates the current situation and trends of OECT for SCI research. Furthermore, the analysis could partly offer direction for international cooperation and teamwork on OECT for SCI, to obtain a more effective treatment for SCI.
