Challenges faced by African countries in achieving the goals of sustainable development are similar and trans-boundary. Previous analysis of Africa’s progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has largely beennon-spatial, reducing the ability to find spatial relationships between countries and SDGs to help cooperationand proffer country-specific interventions. This study adopted techniques of exploratory and inferential spatialstatistics to assess the successes of African countries from 2016 to 2020 in achieving the goals of sustainable de-velopment. Also, the study sought to understand how the spatial synergies and trade-offs between SDGs vary percountry and time. The results revealed that spatial hotspots of countries with high SDGs scores were mostly con-fined to northern African countries with significant coldspots within central and eastern Africa and few patchesin western and southern Africa for 2016. In 2020, the number of countries forming hotspots reduced, with Cen-tral African countries as significant cold spots. Five main spatial relationships: positive linear, negative linear,concave, convex and undefined complex, were found among countries and the SDGs. However, these spatialrelationships were fluid as they changed over time and with different levels of influence from 2016 to 2020.The study concludes that generic solutions and policies by development agencies, governments, developmentfinance instiutions and other impact investors will not be enough in achieving the SDGs because of the spatialheterogeneity of the continent. Tailored and country-specific policies based on results of spatial statistics matter.

Resampling in neural networks with application to spatial analysis

In developing Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs),the available dataset is split into three categories:training,validation and testing.However,an important problem arises:How to trust the predic-tion provided by a particular ANN?Due to the randomness related to the network itself(architecture,initialization and learning procedure),there is usually no best choice.Considering this issue,we provide a framework,which captures the randomness related to the network itself.The idea is to perform several training and test trials based on the Jackknife resampling method.Jackknife consists of iteratively deleting a single observation each time from the sample and recomputing the ANN on the rest of the sample data.Consequently,interval prediction is available instead of point prediction.The proposed method was applied and tested using pH,Ca and P data obtained by analyzing 118 georeferenced soil points.The results,based on the dataset size simulation,showed that 60%reduction in available dataset offers compatible accuracy in relation to full dataset,and therefore a higher cost of sampling in the field would not be necessary.The re-sampling method spatially characterizes the points of greater or lesser accuracy and uncertainty.The re-sampling method increased the success rate by using interval prediction instead of using the mean as the most probable value.Although we restrict it to the regression neural network model,the resampling method proposed can also be extended to other modern statistical tools,such as Kriging,Least Squares Collocation(LSC),Convolutional Neural Network(CNN),and so on.

Urban restaurants and online food delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic:a spatial and socio-demographic analysis

In this research,we analyzed the delivery service areas of restaurants,customer satisfaction,and restaurant sales of urban restaurants during the COVID-19 pandemic.We obtained the datasets on food ordering options and restaurant rankings based on Google Maps,Open Street Map,and widely known online food order applications in Iran.Based on this analysis we further modeled suitable areas for future extension of restaurants.We analyzed the online food order data of restaurants’sales and food delivery reports for 1050 restaurants in the city of Tabriz.We collected and analyzed data on the restaurant locations,the number of food orders for each restaurant,and the number of customers and their locations.Our results revealed that the spatial dimension of the newly emerging food delivery areas is of utmost importance for the success of restaurants.This indicates that an optimal location is not longer only dependent on factors like population density and competitors in the direct vicinity but on the services density even from more distant competitors.The results indicate that an optimized spatial distribution of the restaurants together with efficient quality in services can contribute to optimistic urban development.

Exploring the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of the border land use multifunctionality(LUMF)provides insights for taking advantage of border land use and optimizing border land use policies.Based on the improved Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution(TOPSIS)mode,this study identifies and evaluates the LUMFs in the China-Vietnam border area between 2000 and 2018 from the perspectives of agricultural production,social security,ecological service,landscape recreation,and national security.The results show that:1)The comprehensive land use functions in most counties and cities continued to be improved.2)The comprehensive land use function exhibits remarkable spatial divergence and aggregation characteristics.The high-value area of the agricultural production function and social security function evolves from the east to the west.In addition,the spatial evolution of ecological service function is complicated,without an obvious spatial divergence and aggregation pattern.The landscape recreation function shows different spatial differentiation characteristics in the early and middle stage,and forms a large cluster in the later stage.Finally,the spatial evolution pattern of the national security function is significant.3)Designing differentiated border land policies,improving border land use security,and establishing a long-term mechanism for ecological protection and ecological compensation can aid in optimizing the LUMF level in the border area.

We used spatial, global trend and post-blocking analysis to examine the effectiveness of a progeny trial in a tree breeding program for Chinese fir （Cunninghamia lanceolata （Lamb.） Hook） on a hilly site with an environmental gradient from hill top to bottom. Diameter at breast height （DBH） and tree height data had significant spatial auto-correlations among rows and columns. Adding a firstorder separable autoregressive term more effectively modelled the spatial variation than did the incomplete block （IB） model used for the experimental design. The spatial model also accounted for effects of experimental design factors and greatly reduced residual variances. The spatial analysis rel- ative to the IB analysis improved estimation of genetic parameters with the residual variance reduced 13 and 19% for DBH and tree height, respectively; heritability increased 35 and 51% for DBH and tree height, respectively; and genetic gain improved 3-5%. Fitting global trend and postblocking did not improve the analyses under IB model. The use of a spatial model or combined with a design model is recommended for forest genetic trials, particularly with global trend and local spatial variation of hilly sites.

spatial analysis of Traffic Accidents in the City of Medina Using GIS

The general objective of this research is to determine how to use the spatial analysis of traffic accidents in Medina Menorah City through geographic information systems. This research aimed to identify, locate and define the sites where traffic accidents are concentrated and determine the need to apply specific safety standards to reduce accidents and identify their causes thereof. This current research applied the analytical descriptive approach for its relevance with this specific research. This research collected traffic accidents data from the Ministry of the Interior, Department of General Traffic. That data captured the hotspots accidents in Medina Menorah City. Some of the most important results of the study are as follows: many roads were selected as High Accident Location HAL, such as Central Ring Roads, King Faisal bin Abdul-Aziz Road, Prince Abdul Majid bin Abdul-Aziz Road, and King Abdulla bin Abdel-Aziz Road. The high-speed roads are heavily linked to the massive increase of traffic accident rates, and the increase in the street section length led to the soaring number of total accidents. The study recommended performing more studies and different highway safety studies to identify and locate accident patterns on road networks. Due to the fact that the accidents concentration is intensely focused on Medina City center and Prophet’s Mosque, it is a must to increase the number of public transportations to and from Prophet’s Mosque, particularly during the Hajj period, because of the fact that the visitors of Prophet’s Mosque is on the increase during the said period. This study can be applied in other cities because knowing the locations of traffic crash hotspots can provide us with valuable insights into the causes of accidents and this knowledge helps decision-makers to better assess the risk associated with accidents.

Background Tuberculosis is one of the most significant infectious diseases for global public health.The reallocation of healthcare resources and the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic have hindered access to TB diag-nosis and treatment.Increases in unfavorable outcomes of the disease have been observed in Brazil.The objective of this study was to analyze the spatial distribution of unfavorable TB treatment outcomes in Brazil before and during the pandemic.Methods An ecological study with spatial analysis was conducted with all 5569 municipalities in Brazil.All reported cases of tuberculosis between January 2010 and December 2021,as well as reported cases of COVID-19 from Febru-ary 2020 to December 2021,were included.The outcomes studied encompass loss to follow-up,drug-resistant tuber-culosis,and death.The Getis Ord GI*technique was employed to assess spatial association,and the Kernel density estimator was used to identify areas with concentrated increases or decreases in outcomes.Bivariate Local Moran's/was used to examine the spatial association between outcomes and cOVID-19 incidence.The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Ribeirao Preto Nursing School,University of Sao Paulo.Results There were 134,394 cases of loss to follow-up,10,270 cases of drug resistance,and 37,863 deaths.Clusters of high and low values were identified for all three outcomes,indicating significant changes in the spatial distribu-tion patterns.Increases in concentrations were observed for lost to follow-up cases in the Southeast,while reductions occurred in the Northeast,South,and Midwest.Drug-resistant tuberculosis experienced an increase in the Southern and Southeastern regions and a decrease in the Northeast and South.TB-related deaths showed notable concentra-tions in the Midwest,Northeast,South,and Southeast.There was an increase in high occurrence clusters for deaths after 2020 and 2021 in the Northeast.Conclusions The pandemic has brought additional challenges,emphasizing the importance of enhancing e

Background:Tuberculosis(TB)is an infectious disease of major public health concern.The disease has demonstrated large space-time variations.This study aims to explore the space-time dynamics of TB cases in an economically and geographically dynamic province in China with specific references of TB control for policy makers.Methods:Data on all reported TB cases from 2009 to 2012 were collected from the TB program at the Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention.We employed time series and exploratory spatial data analyses,including Moran’s I,Local Getis’s G_(i)^(*),and Kulldorff’s space-time scan statistics,to identify the temporal trends and spatial patterns of TB at a county level.Results:A total of 147,941 TB cases were reported during 2009–2012 in Zhejiang.A higher proportion of TB cases were younger,male,and registered permanent residents among all TB cases notified in the province.TB cases were reported most frequently in April with small peaks in June,July,and October.This disease was spatially clustering with Moran’s I values ranged from 0.29 to 0.32(p<0.001).A most likely cluster and ten secondary clusters were identified,mainly concentrated in the southeast and west counties of the province.Conclusions:This study identified seasonal patterns and significant space-time clusters of TB cases in Zhejiang,China.Poverty,migration,and seasonal effects may play important roles in potential clusters.

Identifying disaster-related tweets and their semantic,spatial and temporal context using deep learning,natural language processing and spatial analysis:a case study of Hurricane Irma

We introduce an analytical framework for analyzing tweets to(1)identify and categorize fine-grained details about a disaster such as affected individuals,damaged infrastructure and disrupted services;(2)distinguish impact areas and time periods,and relative prominence of each category of disaster-related information across space and time.We first identify disaster-related tweets by generating a human-labeled training dataset and experimenting a series of deep learning and machine learning methods for a binary classification of disasterrelatedness.We employ LSTM(Long Short-Term Memory)networks for the classification task because LSTM networks outperform other methods by considering the whole text structure using long-term semantic word and feature dependencies.Second,we employ an unsupervised multi-label classification of tweets using Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA),and identify latent categories of tweets such as affected individuals and disrupted services.Third,we employ spatiallyadaptive kernel smoothing and density-based spatial clustering to identify the relative prominence and impact areas for each information category,respectively.Using Hurricane Irma as a case study,we analyze over 500 million keyword-based and geo-located collection of tweets before,during and after the disaster.Our results highlight potential areas with high density of affected individuals and infrastructure damage throughout the temporal progression of the disaster.

Quantitative evaluation of the risk induced by dominant geomorphological processes on different land uses, based on GIS spatial analysis models

Maramures Land is mostly characterized byagricultural and forestry land use due to its specificconfiguration of topography and its specific pedoclimaticconditions. Taking into consideration the trend of the lastcentury from the perspective of land management, adecrease in the surface of agricultural lands to theadvantage of built-up and grass lands, as well as anaccelerated decrease in the forest cover due to uncontrolledand irrational forest exploitation, has become obvious. Thefield analysis performed on the territory of Maramures Land has highlighted a high frequency of two geomor-phologic processes - landslides and soil erosion - whichhave a major negative impact on land use due to their rateof occurrence. The main aim of the present study is the GISmodeling of the two geomorphologic processes, determin-ing a state of vulnerability （the USLE model for soilerosion and a quantitative model based on the morpho-metric characteristics of the territory, derived from the HG.447/2003） and their integration in a complex model ofcumulated vulnerability identification. The modeling of therisk exposure was performed using a quantitative approachbased on models and equations of spatial analysis, whichwere developed with modeled raster data structures andprimary vector data, through a matrix highlighting thecorrespondence between vulnerability and land useclasses. The quantitative analysis of the risk was performedby taking into consideration the exposure classes asmodeled databases and the land price as a primaryalphanumeric database using spatial analysis techniquesfor each class by means of the attribute table. The spatialresults highlight the territories with a high risk to presentgeomorphologic processes that have a high degree ofoccurrence and represent a useful tool in the process ofspatial planning.
