Insights into the mechanisms underlying the biodegradation of phenanthrene in biochar-amended soil:from bioavailability to soil microbial communities

The dynamic effect of biochar amendment in contaminated soil on the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and microbial communities and how it comprehensively affects PAH biodegradation remain *** study investigated the effects of wheat straw-derived biochars obtained at 300 and 500℃ at different amendment levels(0.03%and 0.3%)on the mineralization kinetics of phenanthrene with different initial concentrations(2 and 20 mg kg^(−1))in soil by indigenous *** results revealed that the addition of biochar inhibited both the rates and extents of mineralization in low-concentration phenanthrene-contaminated soil(PLS)by 38.9-78.3%and 23.9-53.6%,*** was because biochar amendment in the PLS greatly reduced the bioavailable fraction of phenanthrene for degradation owing to its strong sorption and also decreased that to specific degrading bacterial genera,which hindered their growth and reduced their abundances by 1.37-36.6%.However,biochar addition into the soil contaminated with high concentrations of phenanthrene(PHS)resulted in its effective mineralization and enhanced mineralization rates and extents at high amendment levels by 32.4-86.7%and 32.0-44.7%,*** was because biochar amendment in the PHS significantly promoted the abundances of the total bacterial communities(29.9-80.4%)and potential degrading genera(1.89-25.9%)by providing nutrients and stimulated the specific PAH-degradative nidA gene abundance by 1-2 *** findings will guide the use of biochar to remediate soils with different PAH pollution levels based on the two roles that they play(i.e.,immobilizing PAHs or facilitating PAH degradation).

Effects of coal-fired power plants on soil microbial diversity and community structures

Long-term deposition of atmospheric pollutants emitted from coal combustion and their effects on the eco-environment have been extensively studied around coal-fired power ***,the effects of coal-fired power plants on soil microbial communities have received little attention through atmospheric pollutant deposition and ***,we collected the samples of power plant soils(PS),coal-stacking soils(CSS)and agricultural soils(AS)around three coal-fired power plants and background control soils(BG)in Huainan,a typical mineral resource-based city in East China,and investigated the microbial diversity and community structures through a high-throughput sequencing ***-stacking significantly increased(psoils,whereas the deposition of atmospheric pollutants enhanced the levels of V,Cu,Zn and ***,Actinobacteria,Thaumarchaeota,Thermoplasmata,Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant taxa in all *** bacterial community showed significant differences(pcommunities showed significant differences(psoil samples around three coal-fired power *** predominant environmental variables affecting soil bacterial,archaeal and fungal communities were Mo-TN-TS,Cu-V-Mo,and organic matter(OM)-Mo,*** soil microbial genera were closely related to multiple key factors associated with stacking coal and heavy metal deposition from power *** study provided useful insight into better understanding of the relationships between soil microbial communities and long-term disturbances from coal-fired power plants.

Afforestation has an important role in biodiversity conservation and ecosystem function improvement.A meta-analysis was carried out in China,which has the largest plantation area globally,to quantify the effects of plantings on soil microbial *** results showed that the overall effect of afforestation on soil microbial diversity was positive across the *** forest algorithm suggested that soil carbon was the most important factor regulating microbial diversity and the positive response was only found with new plantings on low-carbon bare lands but not on high-carbon farmlands and *** addition,afforestation with broadleaved species increased microbial diversity,whereas planting with conifers had no effect on microbial *** study clarified the effects of plantings on soil microbial diversity,which has an important implication for establishing appropriate policies and practices to improve the multiple functionalities(e.g.,biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation)during plantation establishment.

A field experimental study on the impact of Acer platanoides,an urban tree invader,on forest ecosystem processes in North America

Background:Invasive species affect community dynamics and ecosystem functions,but the mechanisms of their impacts are poorly *** on invasion impact range from Superior Competitor to Novel Function,from Enemy Escape to microbial *** this study,we examined the effects of an urban tree invader,Acer platanoides(Norway maple,NM),on a mesic deciduous forest in contrast to its native congener Acer rubrum(red maple,RM)with a split-plot design experiment.A total of 720 maple seedlings were transplanted to 72 plots under 24 trees of three canopy *** three experimental treatments were removal of resource competition at above-and belowground and removal of leaf-litter *** moisture and nitrogen-related microbial activities were followed for each ***:We found that partial canopy removal increased canopy openness and light transmission to the forest floor,but to a greater extent under NM than under RM *** seedlings were more shade tolerant than RM seedlings in height *** the reciprocal transplantation in the mixed forest,biomass accumulation of NM seedlings under RM trees were twice as much as under NM,while that of RM seedlings under NM trees was 23.5%less than under *** net nitrification and relative nitrification were significantly higher,but mineralization rate was much lower under NM than under RM trees,which would lead to faster N leaching and lower N availability in the *** with litter removal had significantly higher seedling mortality due to herbivory by the end of 2 years,especially for NM seedlings under NM *** enhanced soil water availability but there was no difference among canopy ***:Our results demonstrated that invasion of NM not only altered forest canopy structure but also changed herbivory rate for seedlings and N dynamics in the *** seedlings were more shade tolerant under NM canopies than RM seedlings and were more protected by NM litter under NM canopie

Effects of Slope Aspects on soil Bacterial and Arbuscular Fungal communities in a Boreal Forest in China

The effects of slope aspects on soil biogeochemical properties and plant communities in forested environments have been studied extensively; however, slope aspect influence on soil microbial communities remains largely unexamined, despite the central role of soil biota in ecosystem functioning. In this study, the communities of both soil bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi （AMF） were investigated using tagged pyrosequencing for three types of slope aspects （south-facing aspect, north-facing aspect and flat area） in a boreal forest of the Greater Khingan Mountains, China. The bacterial and AMF community composition differed with slope aspects. Bacterial diversity was the lowest on the north-facing aspect, and AMF diversity was the lowest on the flat area. Aspects also had a significant impact on soil pH and available phosphorus （P） and shrubby biomass. soil pH and understory shrub biomass were significantly correlated with bacterial communities, and soil available P and shrub biomass showed significant correlations with AMF communities. Our results suggested that slope aspects affected bacterial and AMF communities, mediated by aspect-induced changes in plant community and soil chemical properties （e.g., pH and available P）, which improved the knowledge on the effects of forest slope aspects on aboveground and belowground communities.
