Density-induced social stress alters oxytocin and vasopressin activities in the brain of a small rodent species

It is known that social stress could alter oxytocin(OT)and arginine-vasopressin(AVP)expression in specific regions of brains which regulate the aggressive behavior of small rodents,but the effects of density-induced social stress are still ***’s voles(Lasiopodomys brandtii)are small herbivores in the grassland of China,but the underlying neurological mechanism of population regulation is still *** tested the effects of housing density of Brandt’s voles on OT/AVP system with physical contact(allowing aggression)and without physical contact(not allowing aggression)under laboratory ***,we tested the effects of paired-aggression(no density effect)of Brandt’s voles on OT/AVP system under laboratory *** hypothesized that high density would increase aggression among animals which would then increase AVP but reduce OT in brains of *** results showed that high housing density induced more aggressive *** found high-densityinduced social stress(with or without physical contact)and direct aggression significantly increased expression of mRNA and protein of AVP and its receptor,but decreased expression of mRNA and protein of OT and its receptor in specific brain regions of *** results suggest that density-dependent change of OT/AVP systems may play a significant role in the population regulation of small rodents by altering density-dependent aggressive behavior.

stress, a common experience in daily life, has both health risks and benefits. While prolonged stress has been linked with impaired immunity and higher risk for depression and anxiety disorders, stress has been recognized as potentially adaptive in the regulation of our immunity and cognitive performance. social evaluation can serve as social support to protect individuals from stress but can also intensify stress. However, it remains unknown how acute social stress influences the processing of social feedback. Here, combining a two-stage belief update paradigm and a social evaluative stress paradigm, we examine whether and how acute social stress and intranasal administration of oxytocin influence individual’s belief update upon desirable and undesirable social feedback. We found that participants’ heart rate and cortisol level were significantly increased after experiencing stress. Moreover, oxytocin decreased participants’ cortisol response to social stress. We further showed that oxytocin administration under stress led to the most optimistic-oriented belief updating pattern, suggesting an interactive effect of social stress and oxytocin on optimistic beliefs. Moreover, this interactive effect was mainly found for belief updating selectively upon desirable feedback but not upon undesirable feedback. social stress and oxytocin treatment facilitate optimistic belief updating. Supporting the protective hypothesis, individuals experiencing and given oxytocin treatment exhibit the highest level of optimism.

Early social conditions affect female fecundity in hermaphrodites

social conditions experienced prior to sexual maturity influence reproduction later in life in many animals. In simulta- neous hermaphrodites, variation in mating group size influences reproductive investment. As the mating group size increases, re- productive resources devoted to the female function decrease in favor of the male function. Prior to sexual maturity, many her- maphrodites have a protandrous phase during which they produce sperm and can fertilize hermaphrodites＇ eggs. In the simulta- neously hermaphroditic polychaete worm Ophryotrocha diadema, the cost of male reproduction during adolescence is spread over the whole energy budget of worms as shown by a reduced growth rate, a delayed age at sexual maturity and the shortening of life span compared to protandrous males that do not reproduce. Little is known on whether social conditions experienced dur- ing development affect reproductive investment of immature individuals. We investigated whether social conditions affected the length of the protandrous phase, body size and also the subsequent female fecundity of same-age protandrous individuals of O. diadema, which did not had to face competition for egg fertilization. Results show that in large group sizes protandrous males lengthened their protandrous phase, slowed down body growth and decreased their individual investment at the first egg laying compared to protandrous males that were reared in isolation. In the successive egg layings worms adjusted their egg output to the current social conditions. We interpreted these results as an indication that early social conditions represent a social stress result- ing in a reduction of the overall reproductive resources up to the first egg laying .

Previous work exploring the interrelationships between sex steroids(***,testosterones and 11-ketotestosterones)and social behavior in teleosts suggest that mirror-elicited aggression in cichlid fish may not trigger a hormonal *** the Mozambique tilapia(Oreochromis mossambicus)to analyze immune responses as a result of social stress,we measured levels of cortisol and melatonin using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay(ELISA)*** this work,we demonstrated that cortisol concentrations are significantly lower yet the levels of melatonin remain unchanged in tilapia that are fighting their mirror *** results suggested that in tied fights,certain hormone levels remain unchanged(***)due to the lack of melatonin induction.

Opposite Sex Contact and Isolation: A Novel Depression/Anxiety Model

To mimic human mood disorders, traditional chronic stresses and social defeat stress have been developed and widely applied. However, these active stresses do not mimic the emotional flaws induced by stresses, and their input levels vary greatly. Also, emotional stresses resulting from social unobtainability remain largely elusive due to the lack of useful animal models. In this study, we developed a mouse model named ‘‘opposite sex contact and isolation’’(OSCI) and found that OSCI induced significant social avoidance, anhedonia, and anxiety. These behavioral defects developed differently after 7 days of OSCI. The social avoidance behavior was self-curable while anxiety gradually worsened but was alleviated by re-pairing with the same female partner. Corresponding to the behavior changes, the plasma corticosterone and phosphorylated c AMP response element binding protein levels were decreased in the nucleus accumbens of the mice that experienced isolation. Together,this study has developed a novel strategy for depression/anxiety modeling and shows that OSCI may be a useful tool for studying the lovelorn/lovesick type of depression.
