Patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)represent a distinct group of head and neck cancer patients.They are often non-smokers,non-drinkers,and on average 10 to 20 years younger than those with cancers of other head and neck sites.Given good baseline health status and the effectiveness of contemporary treatment[1],patients with NPC typically have long projected life expectancies and commonly develop late treatment adverse effects,such as dysphagia and swallowing dysfunction.

1 About the Special Issue Editor Xin Wang received his PhD in Safety Science and Engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China(USTC)in 2013.He is currently employed as an Associate Professor of the State Key Laboratory of Fire Science(SKLFS)at the University of Science and Technology of China(USTC).His research activities are focused on fire-safe polymer composites,including flame retardant polymer nanocomposites,smoke suppression of polymers,and sustainable flame retardant technologies.To date,he has authored or co-authored 150 papers in peer-reviewed international journals(total citations 8280,H index=55),1 monograph,5 invited book chapters and 12 patents in these fields.He serves as editorial board members of the Journal of Renewable Materials.He was also awarded the 2nd Prize of National Natural Science Award awarded by the Chinese Government(2017).

The Chinese edition of the Annual Report on Cardiovascular Health and Diseases in China 2020 has been published.[1]We present herein an interpretation of this report.Factors influencing cardiovascular health Tobacco use About 1.9 million avoidable deaths from coronary heart disease(CHD)per year(approximately one-fifth of all CHD deaths globally)are attributable to tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke(SHS).An estimated 382,000 people died of CHD attributable to SHS exposure,representing 4.3%of all deaths from CHD.

Covalent adaptable networks(CANs)combine the uniqueness of thermoplastics and thermosets to allow for reprocessability while being covalently crosslinked.However,it is highly desirable but rarely achieved for CANs to simultaneously demonstrate reversibility and mechanical robustness.Herein,we report a feasible strategy to develop a novel epoxy vitrimer(EV)composed of adaptable phosphate networks(APNs),by which the EVs exhibit promising mechanical properties(tensile strength of 62.5~87.8 MPa and tensile modulus of 1360.1~2975.3 MPa)under ambient conditions.At elevated temperatures,the topology rearrangement occurs relied on phosphate transesterification,which contributes to the shape memory performance,selfhealing,reprocessing,and welding behaviors.Moreover,the incorporation of APNs allows for improvements in anti-ignition and also the inhibition of both heat release and smoke generation to avoid empyrosis,asphyxiation,and toxication during burning,showing expected intrinsic fire safety.Thermal,mechanical properties,and flame retardancy of the reprocessed EVs after hot pressing are very close to those of the original EVs,which is attributed to the suficient reversibility of APNs.Accordingly,combining the aforementioned features,EVs are manufactured as flame-triggered switches for fire alarms,which symbolizes the innovative development of high-performance covalent adaptable polymeric materials.

Death toll by smoke in fire is estimated at 70% which emphasizes the importance of smoke control system to deal with the fire smoke. In advanced countries, the studies on method to prevent smoke spread by forming the air curtain using high velocity jet flow are underway now. In this study, a linear-jet type air curtain system is proposed to prevent the smoke spread and analysis of flow characteristics of pressure chamber, which is the core component, is conducted through numerical analysis and experimental approach. Consequently, the pressure was increased in 2D functional way to input air flowrate and about 595 Pa pressure was formed at pressure chamber inlet in response to 30 m/s nozzle jet velocity.

The pressurization smoke control system has been commonly used as a smoke control system at the emergency stairs of high-rise buildings. However, a higher possibility of overpressure between the lobby and the accommodation or pressure drop in the lobby could lead to failure in achievement of the purpose of pressurization system, particularly when supplying the leakage and supplementary air flow through one air-supply path at a time. To improve this particular issue, the devise configurations, as well as the different ways to supply the leakage and supplementary air flow through the different flow passages have been proposed. The performance of the trial product was evaluated on the test bed, ultimately providing a safe evacuation environment if high-rise buildings fired.

Inhibitory Effect of Cigarette smoke Extract on Experimental Lung Metastasis of Mouse Melanoma by Suppressing Tumor Invasion

We investigated the effect of a nicotine-and tar-free cigarette smoke extract (CSE) using an experimental metastasis mouse model which was intravenously injected with B16-BL6 mouse melanoma cells. Three-hour pretreatment of cells with various concentrations of CSE (0, 0.1, 0.3, and 1%) dose-dependently reduced the number of lung metastatic nodules 14 days after tumor injection. To elucidate the mechanism of this anti-metastatic effect of CSE, we examined the invasion and migration activities of B16-BL6 cells pretreated with CSE for three hours in vitro. CSE significantly reduced the invasion of cells at 1% and the migration at 0.3% and 1%. Under the same pretreatment conditions, CSE had no effect on the proliferation of cells. These findings suggest that CSE contains some ingredients that suppress hematogenic lung metastasis via inhibition of the invasion and migration activities of mouse melanoma cells.

Smoking during pregnancy is a major source of fetal exposure to numerous harmful agents present in tobacco smoke. Lung development involves complex biochemical processes resulting in dramatic changes which continue even after birth. In addition to type I cells which form the blood-air barrier, type II alveolar epithelial (AE) cells have important and diverse functions related to immunological protection and stabilization of the alveolus through synthesis and secretion of the pulmonary surfactant. Apoptosis or programmed cells death is an important physiological process during lung embryogenesis and for the proper maintenance of homeostasis. Caspases are proteases that play important roles in regulating apoptosis. Caspase-3 is the key executioner caspase in the cascade of events leading to cell death by apoptosis. We explored the hypothesis that cigarette smoke extract (CSE) induces apoptosis in fetal rat lung type II AE cells by activation of caspase-3. To analyze these factors, isolated fetal rat lung type II AE cells were used. The cells were exposed to different concentrations of CSE (5%, 10% or 15%) (v/v) for 60 min. The results of the present study showed that CSE induced apoptosis in fetal rat lung type II AE cells with a significant increase (p 0.05) in caspase-3 activity and decrease in cell proliferation at CSE concentrations of 10% and 15% (v/v). These observations indicate that cigarette smoke extract induces apoptosis by activation of caspase-3 in fetal rat lung type II AE cells in a dose-dependent manner and may potentially alter the regulated development of the lung and the appearance of the surfactant-producing type II alveolar cells which are critical for the establishment of adequate gas exchange at birth.

Alveolar macrophage functions and DNA damage in cigarette smoke-exposed mice

Alveolar macrophages (AM) are known to play an essential role in lung defense through their ability to remove the foreign matters reaching the lung alveoli. Cigarette smoke (CS) is a critical risk factor for many lung diseases. CS is inhaled into the lung by respiretion and affects AM. It has been previously reported that CS induces inhibition of cytokine production, cell surface receptor expression and antigen presentation in AM. However, the relationship of immune suppression and DNA damage caused by CS in AM is still unclear. Therefore, in this study, we investigated AM immune function and DNA damage in CS-exposed mice. Mice were exposed to CS of 20 cigarettes/day during 10 days using a HambrugⅡsmoking machine. After exposure, AM were obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage. The number of AM was significantly increased in CS-exposed mice compared with non-CS-exposed mice. Phagocytic activity of AM was significantly inhibited by CS exposure. Percentage of CD11b-, CD14-, Toll-like receptor (TLR)2- or TLR4-positive cells was significantly decreased in CS-exposed mice compared with non-CS-exposed mice. Interleukin-1β mRNA expression in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated AM was significantly inhibited by CS exposure. Intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) (, H2O2) production of AM was significantly increased, and DNA damage was induced by CS exposure. These results suggest that impaired immune functions by CS exposure may be related to DNA damage via excessive ROS induced by CS. These alterations of AM caused by CS could be associated with infection and development of pulmonary diseases.
