The association of salivary alpha-amylase, heart rate variability, and psychological stress on objectively measured sleep behaviors among college students

Objective:This study aimed to evaluate sleep behaviors among college students,to assess salivary alpha-amylase(sAA)and heart rate variability(HRV)in association with stress,and to investigate sleep-related factors including sAA,HRV,and stress among ***:Saliva samples for sAA assessment and HRV measurements in the supine position were taken between 3 PM and 6 *** level of prolonged psychological stress for the previous week was evaluated using the Korean version of the Global Assessment of Recent Stress(GARS-K),and sleep behaviors were assessed using an actigraphy ***:A total of 86 healthy college students participated in this *** behaviors of the college students were not good,with 84%sleep efficiency(SE)and 62.7 min wake after sleep onset(WASO).The average sAA level was 65.8 U/mL in the *** neither the sAA level nor HRV indices were significantly correlated with prolonged psychological stress,decreased normalized high frequency(nHF)on HRV was independently associated with a higher level of stress when adjusted for age and *** stress(r=-0.276,P=0.011)and lower sAA(r=0.266,P=0.030)had significant correlations with shorter time in bed;however,it was sAA that was independently associated with time in bed(β=0.244,p=0.044).Decreased nHF(β=0.245,P=0.027)and higher body mass index(BMI)(β=-0.224,P=0.043)were independently related to and poorer ***:Poor sleep behaviors were associated with decreased parasympathetic activity,a physiological change to psychological stress,rather than with psychological stress itself among college ***,sAA and HRV should be considered as significant factors for impaired sleep behaviors in relation to psychological stress.

There is a complex relationship between sleep disorders and childhood neurodevelopmental,emotional,behavioral and intellectual disorders(NDEBID).NDEBID include several conditions such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder,autism spectrum disorder,cerebral palsy,epilepsy and learning(intellectual)*** to 75%of children and young people(CYP)with NDEBID are known to experience different types of insomnia,compared to 3%to 36%in normally developing *** disorders affect 15%to 19%of adolescents with no disability,in comparison with 26%to 36%among CYP with moderate learning disability(LD)and 44%among those with severe *** sleep deprivation is associated with significant risks of behavioural problems,impaired cognitive development and learning abilities,poor memory,mood disorders and school *** also increases the risk of other health outcomes,such as obesity and metabolic consequences,significantly impacting on the wellbeing of other family *** narrative review of the extant literature provides a brief overview of sleep physiology,aetiology,classification and prevalence of sleep disorders among CYP with *** outlines various strategies for the management,including parenting training/psychoeducation,use of cognitive-behavioral strategies and *** management including assessment,investigations,care plan formulation and follow-up are outlined in a flow chart.

sleep is essential for animals,and receives inputs from circadian,homeostasis,and environment,yet the mechanisms of sleep regulation remain *** of molecules in living systems and demonstration of their functional roles are pivotal in furthering our understanding of the molecular basis of ***,we report that guanosine-50-diphos-phate,30-diphosphate(ppGpp)is present in Drosophila,and plays an important role in regulation of sleep and starvation-induced sleep loss(SISL).ppGpp is detected in germ-free Drosophila and hydrolyzed by an enzyme encoded by the mesh1 gene in *** sleep and SISL were defected in mesh1 mutant flies,and rescued by expression of wildtype Mesh1,but not the enzymatically defective mutant *** expression of RelA,the Escherichia coli synthetase for ppGpp,phenocopied mesh1 knockout mutants,whereas overexpression of Mesh1 resulted in the opposite phenotypes,supporting that ppGpp is both necessary and sufficient in sleep regulation.A chemo connectomic screen followed by genetic intersection experiments implicates the Dilp2 neurons in the pars intercerebralis(PI)brain region as the site of ppGpp *** results have thus validated the presence of ppGpp in Drosophila and revealed a physiological role of ppGpp in sleep regulation for the first time.

Comparison of sleep timing of people with different chronotypes affected by modern lifestyle

Circadian rhythm is an endogenous rhythmic behavior of organisms which can be entrained by daily light–dark *** timing of human sleep-cycle is regulated by endogenous circadian rhythm and homeostatic processes. Light exposure affects both sleep timing and circadian rhythm. Now humans can extend lighting time by turning on artificial lights and wake up time is usually triggered by alarm clocks to meet social schedules. This modern lifestyle is believed to be related with a temporal mismatch between sleep and circadian rhythmicity(social jet-lag) and insufficient sleep, which lead to ill mental and physical health outcomes. At present, the impacts of self-selection of light exposure and social constrains on sleep timing is far from clear. According to preferred sleep-wake schedule, there are three different chronotypes. In this paper, we apply a mathematical model to get a quantitative comparison of sleep timing of people with different chronotypes with the effects of modern light consumption and social constrains. The results show that the prolonged day light and evening light exposure both delay preferred sleep timing with the sleep duration almost unchanged. People of evening-type or with longer intrinsic periods are most expected to be vulnerable to evening light. Increasing light exposure can offset the effect of evening light to some extent, but it is most difficult for evening-type people. Social constrains cause the largest social jet-lag in people of evening-type, which increases with evening light intensity or intrinsic periods. Morning-type people's sleep symptoms worsens, while that of evening-type people improves with age. This study provides a theoretical reference for preventing and treating sleep disorder and social jet-lag for individuals with different chronotypes.

An approach for automatic sleep stage scoring and apnea-hypopnea detection

In this article we present an application of data mining to the medical domain sleep research, an approach for automatic sleep stage scoring and apnea-hypopnea detec- tion. By several combined techniques （Fourier and wavelet transform, derivative dynamic time warping, and waveform recognition）, our approach extracts meaningful features （fre- quencies and special patterns like k-complexes and sleep spindles） from physiological recordings containing EEG, ECG, EOG and EMG data. Based on these pieces of in- formation, an ensemble of decision trees is constructed us- ing the principle of bagging, which classifies sleep epochs in their sleep stages according to the rules by Rechtschaf- fen and Kales and annotates occurrences of apnea-hypopnea （total or partial cessation of respiration）. After that, case- based reasoning is applied in order to improve quality. We tested and evaluated our approach on several large public databases from PhysioBank, which showed an overall accu- racy of 95.2% for sleep stage scoring and 94.5% for classify- ing minutes as apneic or non-apneic.
