Service members are at risk for sleep and psychological conditions affecting their readiness. Chronotype(“morningness”or “eveningness”) is strongly associated with sleep, health and performance. The objective of this study was to examine associations between validated measures of chronotype and sleep quality, daytime functioning, alertness,and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD) in US service members(n=298).Although predominantly young males(who skew toward eveningness in civilian populations), these Sailors skewed toward morningness(35.6% morning, 51.3% intermediate). Eveningness was associated with symptoms of depression and PTSD(Psleep disruption(Psleep important for performance(P<0.05). To maximize service member readiness, schedules should be aligned with endogenous rhythms, whenever possible, and evening chronotypes may benefit from targeted interventions. Chronotype should be examined alongside health and readiness in service members.

In 2022,Duncan et al.1 published results from an investigation of the combined effects of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise(AER),muscle-strengthening activities(MSA),and sleep durations on the risks for all-cause mortality in 282,473 U.S.adults aged 18-84 years.The authors aggregated data from the 2004 to 2014 U.S.National Health Interview Survey(NHIS)2 and followed respondents for 5.4 years to ascertain risks for all-cause mortality.They obtained mortality data from the U.S.National Death Index.

Introduction: In the last thirty years, brain neuromodulation techniques have been used as an alternative to pharmacological treatment of neurological disorders. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder leading to bradykinesia, rest tremor, postural changes, and non-motor symptoms such as depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, pain, and cognitive decline that compromises executive functions (EFs), responsible for the orderly execution of behaviors and tasks of daily life and intentional and directed actions. To this date, a few studies with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) have shown beneficial effects in PD patients concerning specific motor and non-motor symptoms, targeting the motor cortex and/or prefrontal regions. Objective: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of left prefrontal tDCS across a broad spectrum of motor and non-motor symptoms of PD using established validated scales. Method: Single-blind randomized clinical trial with 18 volunteers with PD, aged between 45 and 80 years (66.1 ± 9.65), who met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Participants were submitted to assessments of motor and non-motor functions employing psychometric scales and tests to evaluate EFs and were randomly divided into two groups: control (sham stimulation) and experimental (active stimulation). All participants were involved in three separate tDCS sessions. The anode was positioned over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the cathode over the right supraorbital region, with a direct current intensity of 2 mA, lasting 20 minutes. At the end of the three sessions, all participants were reassessed. Results: Significant effects of tDCS on non-motor functions were observed for cognition (verbal fluency of actions, clock copy test, appointment by visual confrontation, and verbal memory with immediate free recall) and subjective assessment of sleep quality (overall restlessness and discomfort in the arms and legs at night, leg and arm cramps at night and distressing dreams).

BACKGROUND Depression is the most common type of depressive disorder.The most common sleep disorder associated with depression is insomnia.Insomnia and depression are closely related.AIM To investigate the relationship of designed questionnaire items and depression,and analyze the related factors with depression.METHODS Questionnaire included Patient Health Questionnaire-9(PHQ-9)and Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI),12 kinds of diseases,8 general characteristics,and 20 insomnia characteristics,totally 56 items were filled out by 411 patients enrolled.RESULTS All the 9 items of PHQ-9,6 components of PSQI(except sleep duration),education,living situation,exercise,years of insomnia,western medicine treatment,Chinese medicine treatment,psychotherapy,kinds of insomnia,treatment expected to treat insomnia,psychological counseling,habit of 1 h before bed,habit of lunch break,diagnosed depression,coronary heart disease,mental illness showed significant difference between without and with depression group.By univariate analysis and multivariate analysis.The odds ratio of education,exercise,kinds of insomnia,habit of 1 h before bed,diagnosed depression,coronary heart disease(P=0.01)showed significant difference.Their odds ratios were 0.71(0.55,0.93),2.09(1.32,3.31),0.76(0.63,0.91),0.89(0.81,0.98),0.32(0.17,0.60),0.43(0.23,0.79).CONCLUSION We demonstrated that education,exercise,kinds of insomnia,habit of 1 h before bed,diagnosed depression and coronary heart disease affect the depression.
