Gas-assisted microfluidic step-emulsification forgenerating micron- and submicron-sized droplets

Micron- and submicron-sized droplets have extensive applications in biomedical diagnosis and drug ***, accurate high-throughput analysis requires a uniform droplet size distribution and high production *** the previously reported microfluidic coflow step-emulsification method can be used to generate highlymonodispersed droplets, the droplet diameter (d) is constrained by the microchannel height (b), d\3b, while theproduction rate is limited by the maximum capillary number of the step-emulsification regime, impedingemulsification of highly viscous liquids. In this paper, we report a novel, gas-assisted coflow step-emulsificationmethod, where air serves as the innermost phase of a precursor hollow-core air/oil/water emulsion. Air graduallydiffuses out, producing oil droplets. The size of the hollow-core droplets and the ultrathin oil layer thickness bothfollow the scaling laws of triphasic step-emulsification. The minimal droplet size attains d 1:7b, inaccessible instandard all-liquid biphasic step-emulsification. The production rate per single channel is an order-of-magnitudehigher than that in the standard all-liquid biphasic step-emulsification and is also superior to alternative emulsificationmethods. Due to low gas viscosity, the method can also be used to generate micron- and submicron-sized droplets ofhigh-viscosity fluids, while the inert nature of the auxiliary gas offers high versatility.

Observation of Coulomb Gap and Enhanced Superconducting Gap in Nano-sized Pb Islands Grown on SrTiO3

We report high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy(STM)study of nano-sized Pb islands grown on SrTiO3,where three distinct types of gaps with different energy scales are *** low temperature,we find that the superconducting gap(△s)in nano-sized Pb islands is significantly enhanced from the one in bulk Pb,while there is no essential change in superconducting transition temperature Tc,giving rise to a larger BCS ratio 2△s/kBTc^8.31 and implying stronger electron-phonon *** stronger coupling can originate from the interface electron-phonon interactions between Pb islands and *** the superconducting gap is totally suppressed under applied magnetic field,the Coulomb gap with apparent V-shape ***,the size of Coulomb gap(Ac)depends on the lateral size of Pb islands(R)with △c-1/R^035,indicating that quantum size effect can significantly influence electronic *** experimental results shall shed important light on the interplay among superconductivity,quantum size effect and correlations in nano-sized strong-coupling superconductors.

Anomalous Dielec trie Behavior in Nanome ter-sized Amorphous Silicon Nitride

An anomalous dielectric behavior in nanometer-sized amocthous silicon nitride is reported. The dielectric constant of nanometer-sized ajnorph. silicon nitride has strong dependence on frequency at room temperature (RT),which is completely different from the conventional coarse-grain silicon nitride. The maximum of the dielectric constant of nanometer-sized amorphous silicon nitride at KT is about 40 times larger than that of the conventional silicon nitride. The anomalous dielectric behavior is explained by a kind of mech&nism of *** that is, interfacial polarization.

Evidence of the Nano-sized Si Microstructure of Porous Si From Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Ag/Si multilayers with nanometer sized particles of silver during annealing process

Thein situ low angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to monitor the interdiffusion characteristics as well as the microstructure in Ag/Si multilayers with modulated wavelength 7. 64 nm when annealing from 323 to 573 K. The interdiffusion mechanism of Ag/Si multilayers with immiscibility is different from that of other metal/Si multilayers which are miscible. Phase separation takes place at 323 K, then silicon atoms diffuse into silver sublayers through silver grain boundaries and separate silver sublayers into nanometer sized silver particles gradually at higher temperature. The mean size of silver particles is about 5 nm. The activation energy and frequency factor are determined to be 0.24 eV and 2.02 x?20m2/s, respectively.

Methane(CH_(4))is the main component of natural gas,causing severe greenhouse effect[1].To date,about 90%of CH_(4)is burned into carbon dioxide(CO_(2))and released into the atmosphere through various ways,resulting in not only a waste of resource but also a damage to the environment[2].Seeking efficient ways to convert CH_(4)into valuable fuels and chemicals is highly appealing for the rational use of fossil fuels and renewable energy feedstock,as well as for reducing greenhouse gas *** CH_(4)oxidation represents a promising greener approach that utilizes abundant sunlight to produce liquid fuels under mild conditions compared with the traditional thermocatalytic conversion of CH_(4)process.

Miniaturized,multifunctional,and economical on-orbit service satellites have been increasingly used with the continuous increase of space exploration *** this paper,an innovative deployable manipulator is designed,named Cubot,which can be stowed in 1 U-sized(10 cm×10 cm×10 cm)*** CubeSat as the carrier,the deployable Cubot aims to achieve a variety of on-orbit operation tasks including space debris removal and space station on-orbit maintenance,for future on-orbit servicing,assembly,and manufacturing(OSAM).A kinematics modeling method of a space manipulator with passive joints is proposed,and the motion equation of the manipulator is *** the elastic potential energy stored in the passive joint during deployment,the momentum change of Cubot is simulated and *** the main forced element,the end effector is analyzed using *** stress response with respect to the force distribution and the clamping angle is analyzed to evaluate mechanical performances of the end-effector *** tests are conducted to verify the feasibility of Cubot based on a principled prototype,which aims to provide engineering and practical experience for the development of this field.
