Mobile blood collection sites and their roles in providing safe andadequate supply： A six-year experience

The determination of the role of mobile sites, as compared with fixed sites, in providing safe blood supply will help with the planning of future programs. This retrospective study was carried out at the Khuzestan Blood Transfusion Organization from 2007 to 2012. Samples of the blood collected at mobile sites and fixed sites were compared. Comparisons took into consideration noticeable trends as well as the prevalence of major TTIs including HIV, HBV and HCV. The total number of blood donations from 2007 to 2012 was 621117 out of which 89590 (14.43%) were collected from mobile sites. The overall blood donation index was estimated at 23.8 per 1000 population. The prevalence of HIV, HBV and HCV in mobile site donations was 5.31, 320.34 and 117.4, and in fixed sites was 5.31, 214.72 and 104.83 per 100000 donations respectively. HBV prevalence in mobile sites was significantly higher than in fixed sites (p = 0.014). The blood donation index in Khuzestan province is much better when compared with areas of similar socioeconomic status as well as neighboring countries. The allotment of blood units collected by mobile teams is lower than that of national reports. In addition, the prevalence of TTIs in mobile site blood donations was higher than at fixed sites.

Identification of SNP-containing regulatory motifs in the myelodysplastic syndromes model using SNP arrays and gene expression arrays

Myelodysplastic syndromes have increased in frequency and incidence in the American population, but patient prognosis has not significantly improved over the last decade. Such improvements could be realized if biomarkers for accurate diagnosis and prognostic stratification were successfully identified. In this study, we propose a method that associates two state-of-the-art array technologies-single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array and gene expression array-with gene motifs considered transcription factor -binding sites (TFBS). We are particularly interested in SNP-containing motifs introduced by genetic variation and mutation as TFBS. The potential regulation of SNP-containing motifs affects only when certain mutations occur. These motifs can be identified from a group of co-expressed genes with copy number variation. Then, we used a sliding window to identify motif candidates near SNPs on gene sequences. The candidates were filtered by coarse thresholding and fine statistical testing. Using the regression-based LARS-EN algorithm and a level-wise sequence combination procedure, we identified 28 SNP-containing motifs as candidate TFBS. We confirmed 21 of the 28 motifs with ChIP-chip fragments in the TRANSFAC database. Another six motifs were validated by TRANSFAC via searching binding fragments on coregulated genes. The identified motifs and their location genes can be considered potential biomarkers for myelodysplastic syndromes. Thus, our proposed method, a novel strategy for associating two data categories, is capable of integrating information from different sources to identify reliable candidate regulatory SNP-containing motifs introduced by genetic variation and mutation.

Characterizations and Catalytic Properties of Transition Metal Ions Incorporated in Mesoporous Materials

Mesoporous materials typified by MCM-41 possess well-ordered mesoporous channels with controllable pore sizes from 2-30 nm, and are expected as desirable materials for ***, silicious mesoporous materials generally do not have sufficient intrinsic catalytic *** many studies have focused on introducing catalytically active sites. It is expected that different synthetic methods would result in different coordination structures of metal cations introduced in MCM-41, and thus different catalytic properties in catalytic reactions. The author's group has used two methods, i.e., direct hydrothermal synthesis (DHT) and template-ion exchange (TIE), for the syntheses of V-, Fe-, and Cr-MCM-41 and applied them as catalysts to selective oxidations of hydrocarbons. This paper highlights the characterizations of the coordination structures of these metal cations introduced into MCM-41 by the DHT and the TIE methods, and the structural-property relationships of these metal ion-containing MCM-41 materials in selective oxidation ***-41 was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and sodium silicate as the sources of template and silicon, respectively. In the DHT method, metal cations were directly added into the synthesis gel before hydrothermal synthesis, while the exchanging of metal ions in ethanolic solutions with the template cations contained in the uncalcined MCM-41 was performed in the TIE method. XRD and N2-adsorption measurements showed that the mesoporous regularity was not destroyed with both synthetic methods for all the metal ion-containing MCM-41 with appropriate contents of metal *** V-MCM-41, the characterizations with mainly EXAFS suggested that V5+ cations were in tetrahedral coordination and mainly incorporated inside the framework of MCM-41 to substitute Si4+in the samples by the DHT method.
