Characteristics of CO_2 sequestration in saline aquifers

Storage of CO2 in saline aquifers is a viable option for reducing the amount of CO2 released to the atmosphere. This paper provides an overall review of CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers. First, the principles of CO2 sequestration are presented, including CO2 phase behavior, CO2-water-rock interaction, and CO2 trapping mechanisms. Then storage capacity and CO2 injectivity are discussed as the main determinants of the storage potential of saline aquifers. Next, a site section process is addressed considering basin characteristics, reservoir characteristics, and economic and social concerns. Three main procedures are then presented to investigate the suitability of a site for CO2 sequestration, including site screening, detailed site characterization, and pilot field-scale test. The methods for these procedures are also presented, such as traditional site characterization methods, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulation. Finally, some operational aspects of sequestration are discussed, including well type, injection rate, CO2 purity, and injection strategy.

Optimized selection of suitable sites for farmland consolidation projects using multi-objective genetic algorithms

In order to select suitable sites for farmland consolidation projects,correlation analysis and evolutionary algorithms were used to optimize the evaluation of ecological,social and economic factors,avoiding subjective selection and ignorance of spatial relationships among land attributes.Multi-objective Genetic Algorithms(MOGA)were applied to select the best sites from the perspective of spatial relationship and land attribute evaluation.With carefully defined restrictions and variables,multi-objective optimization is able to select several suitable sites for farmland consolidation projects.The results from a case study in Yangshan,Guangdong of China showed that the selected sites were on the central and southern Yangshan with expected flat terrain and abundant water resources.An empirical experiment also demonstrated that the proposed method is able to provide well selected sites for land consolidation projects.

The Shaping of Spatial Morphology by Water Systems in Traditional Villages in Southern Hunan, China and Its Mechanism of Action

The abundant water resources, rainy climate and dense water network had deeply influenced the formation and development of traditional villages in the southern Hunan region of China. This paper was adopted buffer zone analysis, categorical statistical analysis, vectorization analysis and data literature analysis, studied the shaping of traditional village site selection, plane form and internal spatial structure by water systems in southern Hunan, China, and the mechanism of their effects. The results showed that: 1) The shaping ability and mechanism of the traditional village water system in Xiangnan area on spatial morphology was mainly based on the function of the water system. 2) The layout and spatial morphology of traditional villages were deeply affected by the width, area and form of water systems in Xiangnan area. 3) Traditional villages gave more consideration to water systems with large watershed areas in site selection. 4) Water systems with small watershed areas generally had a greater impact on the internal structure of traditional villages.

Information System for Ocean Wave Resources and Its Application to Wave Power Utilization

An information system for ocean wave resources and its application to wave power utilization are introduced. It can manage, analyze and process the data in the monthly report of ocean wave observation records of the State Ocean Administration, and can provide various kinds of curves and numerical characters of statistics. This system has been put into utility in Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC), the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 1996. An application example is given of the investigation and analysis on ocean wave resource of the Nan Ao Island, Guangdong Province, where a 100 kW onshore OWC (oscillating water column) wave power station will be built. The wave power distribution is obtained in different wave directions for different wave periods. It is found that 70 percent of the wave power comes from the direction of ENE, and more than 95 percent of the wave power is related with direction E. The average wave power density is about 3 kW/m, and more than 80 percent of the wave power is distributed in the wave periods of 4 second to 5 second. Based on the analysis of wave resources, a site on the east coast of the island and a design width of 20 m for the 100 kW station are suggested.

High-level radioactive waste disposal in China: update 2010

For geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste （HLW）, the Chinese policy is that the spent nuclear fuel （SNF） should be reprocessed first, followed by vitrification and final disposal. The preliminary repository concept is a shaft-tunnel model, located in saturated zones in granite, while the final waste form for disposal is vitrified high-level radioactive waste. In 2006, the government published a long-term research and development （R＆D） plan for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste. The program consists of three steps：（1） laboratory studies and site selection for a HLW repository （2006-2020）; （2） underground in-situ tests （2021-2040）; and （3） repository construction （2041-2050） followed by operation. With the support of China Atomic Energy Authority, comprehensive studies are underway and some progresses are made. The site characterization, including deep borehole drilling, has been performed at the most potential Beishan site in Gansu Province, Northwestern China. The data from geological and hydrogeological investigations, in-situ stress and permeability measurements of rock mass are presented in this paper. Engineered barrier studies are concentrated on the Gaomiaozi bentonite. A mock-up facility, which is used to study the thermo-hydro-mechano-chemical （THMC） properties of the bentonite, is under construction. Several projects on mechanical properties of Beishan granite are also underway. The key scientific challenges faced with HLW disposal are also discussed.

The Beishan area,Gansu province,China,is the preselected area for China’s high level radioactive waste repository,and is located in the Erdaojin-Hongqishan compound anticline of the Tianshan-Beishan folded belt.The candidate host rock for the repository is granite.The regional brittle faults are nearly EW-striking.The crust in the area is of block structure,with the crust thickness of 47 through 50km.The depth contour of the crust is nearly EW striking,with very little variation.The gravity gradient is less than 0.6mGal/km.The seismic intensity of the area is less than 6,and no earthquakes with Ms>4 have been happened.Since Tertiary,it is a slowly uplifting area, and the velocity of uplifting is 0.6～0.8mm per year.The direction of the modern principal compressive stress is 40°,and the superimposed fault angle ranges between 55°and 80°,which is in the range of stable superimposed fault angles.The geological characteristics of the Beishan area show that the crust in the area is stable,and it has a great potential for the construction of the high level radioactive waste repository.
