sexual audience affects male's reproduction investment without consequences on reproductive outputs

Males evolved plastic strategies to respond to male-male competition and exhibit adaptive traits and behaviors maximizing their access to the females and limiting sperm competition.Mating behaviors allow males to express quick responses to current sexual audience,that is,the number of nearby conspecifics prone to mate.In contrast,physiological responses are frequently delayed because they are constrained by the time and resources having to be mobilized to produce and export sperm and associated products.This is especially critical in species for which males produce spermatophores.Here we investigated in what extend moth males(the tortricid moth Lobesia botrana)producing spermatophores exhibit plastic behavioral and physiological responses to different sexual audiences before and during mating and the consequences for their reproductive output.We found that males adjusted their mating behaviors and spermatophore size to a potentially elevated risk of sperm competition perceived before mating.In addition,males responded to the closed presence of females during mating by reducing their mating duration.Surprisingly,the various behavioral and physiological responses we highlighted here were not fully reflected in their reproductive performance as we did not reveal any effect on fecundity and fertility of their mate.The selective pressure exerted on males experiencing male-male competition could thus be sufficient to trigger adjustment in male mating behaviors but constrains physiological responses according to the perception of competition.

Female mating status affects male mating tactic expression in the wolf spider Rabidosa punctulata

Males and females have conflicting interests on the frequency and outcomes of mating interactions.Males maximize their fitness by mating with as many females as possible,whereas choosy females often reduce receptivity following copulation.Alternative male mating tactics can be adaptive in their expression to a variety of mating contexts,including interactions with a relatively unreceptive mated female.Male Rabidosa punctulata wolf spiders can adopt distinctive mating tactics when interacting with a female,a complex courtship display,and/or a more coercive direct mount tactic that often involves grappling with females for copulation.In this study,we set up female mating treatments with initial trials and then paired mated and unmated females with males to observe both female remating frequencies and the male mating tactics used during the interactions.Males adopted different mating tactics depending on the mating status of the female they were paired with.Males were more likely to adopt a direct mount tactic with already-mated females and courtship with unmated females.Already-mated females were considerably less receptive to males during experimental trials,although they did remate 34%of the time,the majority of which were with males using a direct mount tactic.Whereas males adjusting to these contextual cues were able to gain more copulations,the observation of multiple mating in female R.punctulata introduces the potential for sperm competition.We discuss this sexual conflict in terms of the fitness consequences of these mating outcomes for both males and females.

Queens remate despite traumatic mating in stingless bees

Males can control female reproduction using genital plugs to impede access by rivals.In social bees,ants,and wasps,plugging may involve traumatic mating,with females being harmed.In stingless bees,chances are that plugs may promote ovarian activan,and are thought to ensure single mating—a general tendency among the social Hymenoptera.However,understanding on relationships between mating plugs,traumatic mating,and mating systems in stingless bees remains limited.To address this,we(1)compared mated queens of 7 Neotropical species to understand the patterns of copulatory marks in females and(2)compared pre-and post-mating genitalia of males and females in Melipona fasciculata to depict plug functional morphology.Data revealed an unprecedented consequence of mating in stingless bees:the characteristic marks left by mating plugs on female abdomens and the inferences that can be made from them.To our surprise,in 1 species M.fasciculata we found that queens retain the plug long after mating,and may carry it for the rest of their lives.All the other 6 species retained the plug for only a short period.Remated queens were only found in M.seminigra,whose multiple copulatory marks match previous findings of polyandry in this species.Our study shows that queens can remate,and suggests that male genital morphology may determine in part the time persistence of plugs.We conclude that traumatic mating plugs do not fully prevent remating in stingless bees and that mating systems are not uniform in this group.Nonetheless,exceptional cases of facultative polyandry in social insects—for example,when mating plugs fail—may confirm a general tendency for single mating in close link with efficient mating plugs.

A screen for bacterial endosymbionts in the model organisms Tribolium castaneum, T. confusum, Callosobruchus maculatus, and related species

Reproductive parasites such as Wolbachia are extremely widespread amongst the arthropods and can have a large influence over the reproduction and fitness of their hosts. Undetected infections could thus confound the results of a wide range of studies that focus on aspects of host behavior, reproduction, fitness, and degrees of reproductive isolation. This potential problem has already been underlined by work investigating the in- cidence of Wolbachia infections in stocks of the model system Drosophila melanogaster. Here we survey a range of lab stocks of further commonly used model arthropods, fo- cusing especially on the flour beetles Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum, the cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculatus and related species （Coleoptera： Tenebrionidae and Bruchidae）. These species are widespread stored product pests so knowledge of infec- tions with symbionts further has potential use in informing biocontrol measures. Beetles were assessed for infection with 3 known microbial reproductive parasites： Wolbachia, Rickettsia, Spiroplasma. Infections with some of these microbes were found in some of the lab stocks studied, although overall infections were relatively rare. The consequences of finding infections in these or other species and the type of previous studies likely to be affected most are discussed.

Fitness consequences of divorce in the azure-winged magpie depends on the breeding experience of a new mate

sexual conflict in producing and raising offspring is a critical issue in evolutionary ecology research.Individual experience affects their breeding performance,as measured by such traits of provisioning of offspring and engagement in extra-pair copulations,and may cause an imbalance in sexual conflict.Thus,divorce is hypothesized to occur within aged social pairs,irrespective of current reproductive success.This concept was explored in the azure-winged magpie Cyanopica cyanus by investigating the divorce of a social pair and its relationship to their changes in breeding performance with prior experience.Females engaging in extra-pair copulation may intensify sexual conflicts and may be the main reason for divorce.Once divorced,females repairing with an inexperienced male realized higher reproductive success than that repairing with an experienced male;males repairing with an experienced female realized higher reproductive success than that repairing with an inexperienced female.This finding indicates that the fitness consequence of divorce depends on the breeding experience of new mates.Divorced females can obtain more extra-pair copulations,whereas divorced males cannot,when they repair with inexperienced breeders.Divorced females provisioned a brood at lower rates than inexperienced females whereas divorced males had no such difference.It appears that divorced females can obtain an advantage in sexual conflicts with inexperienced mates in future reproduction.Consequently,females are probably more active than males in divorcing their aged mates so as to select an inexperienced male as a new mate.Azure-winged magpies thus provide novel insights into the implicaticns of sexual conflict in birds.
