Demand for Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing services in China and Its Implications for Precision Public Health—China, 2021

Introduction:In China,the direct-to-consumer genetic testing(DTC-GT)industry has been undergoing exponential growth during the past few years.This study intends to assess characteristics of DTC-GT users in China,estimate the price elasticity of demand,quantify monetary values of DTC-GT features,and discuss its implications to the development of precision public health.Methods:A total of 629 participants with an average age of 28.8 years were collected from an online survey conducted in November 2021.A discrete choice experiment and a mixed logit modelling approach were used to elucidate consumer preferences to DTC-GT services and evaluate monetary values of certain features.Results:DTC-GT users were found to have a higher level of income on average.The price elasticity of DTC-GT services was estimated to be−0.72(95%CI−0.73 to−0.70).The willingness-to-pay for genetic testing features of physical traits,personality,and dietary recommendation were estimated to be 90,107,and 220 CNY,respectively.Discussion:The nature of big genomic data makes DTC-GT have the potential to aid in the advancement of precision public health through more precise disease prevention and control strategies.The study also notes the need for addressing potential drawbacks of DTCGT and protecting genetic privacy.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest(OHCA)is one of the three leading causes of death in industrialized countries.[1,2]Some studies have described the impact of the first COVID-19 pandemic wave in terms of the number of cases and OHCA survival rates in various regions,[3-5]but few have addressed the relationship between the successive phases and how they affected OHCA.[6,7]The 14-d cumulative incidence peaked at more than 990 cases,with these rates remaining above 200 for an eight-month period between 15 March 2020 and 15 March 2021 in Madrid,Spain.

Global biodiversity is currently in the midst of the sixth mass extinction,and countless species and their key ecosystem services are threatened across different habitats(Vos et al.2015).Constructive actions to address the negative impacts of changing conditions require rigorous biodiversity data integration and synthesis to inform effective policy-making decisions(Heberling et al.2021).Care is needed to ensure objectivity and remove biases in analyses to avoid generating misleading conclusions.Recently,Ramírez-Fráncel et al.(2022)published a review offering an update on the vital ecosystem services of bats on a global scale.We applaud the authors for their attempt to conduct an extremely challenging large-scale analysis in major areas of bat ecosystem services.

BACKGROUND The impact of age on outcomes in cardiogenic shock(CS)is poorly described in the pre-hospital setting.We assessed the impact of age on outcomes of patients treated by emergency medical services(EMS).METHODS This population-based cohort study included consecutive adult patients with CS transported to hospital by EMS.Successfully linked patients were stratified into tertiles by age(18-63,64-77,and>77 years).Predictors of 30-day mortality were assessed through regression analyses.The primary outcome was 30-day all-cause mortality.RESULTS A total of 3523 patients with CS were successfully linked to state health records.The average age was 68±16 years and 1398(40%)were female.Older patients were more likely to have comorbidities including pre-existing coronary artery disease,hypertension,dyslipidemia,diabetes mellitus,and cerebrovascular disease.The incidence of CS was significantly greater with increasing age(incidence rate per 100,000 person years 6.47[95%CI:6.1-6.8]in age 18-63 years,34.34[32.4-36.4]in age 64-77 years,74.87[70.6-79.3]in age>77 years,P77 years had increased risk of 30-day mortality(adjusted hazard ratio=2.26[95%CI:1.96-2.60]).Older patients were less likely to receive inpatient coronary angiography.CONCLUSION Older patients with EMS-treated CS have significantly higher rates of short-term mortality.The reduced rates of invasive interventions in older patients underscore the need for further development of systems of care to improve outcomes for this patient group.

Computing has become more invisible, widespread and ubiquitoussince the inception of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Web of Things. Multipledevices that surround us meet user’s requirements everywhere. Multiple Middleware Framework (MF) designs have come into existence because of the rapiddevelopment of interactive services in Heterogeneous Systems. This resulted inthe delivery of interactive services throughout Heterogeneous Environments(HE). Users are given free navigation between devices in a widespread environment and continuously interact with each other from any chosen device. Numerous interactive devices with recent interactive platforms (for example, SmartPhones, Mobile Phones, Personal Computer (PC) and Personal Digital Assistant(PDA)) are available in the market. For easy access to information and servicesirrespective of the device used for working and even at the drastic change ofthe environment, the execution of applications on a broad spectrum of computingdevices is propelled by the availability of the above-mentioned platforms. Different applications that need interoperability to coordinate and correspond with eachother should be facilitated. Using a standard interface and data format, HE mustlink various devices from various platforms together to communicate with eachother. To aid the interactive services performed by a middleware framework thatoperates on Application Programming Interface (API) over HEs, this issue aims toendorse an Adaptable Service Application Programming Interface (ASAPI).

Great challenges and demands are presented by increasing edge computing services for current elastic optical networks(EONs)to deal with serious diversity and complexity of these services.To improve the match degree between edge computing and optical network,the services awareness function is necessary for EON.This article proposes a Naive long short-term memory(Naive-LSTM)based services awareness strategy of the EON,where the Naive-LSTM model makes full use of the most simplified structure and conducts discretization of the LSTM model.Moreover,the proposed algorithm can generate the probability output result to determine the quality of service(Qo S)policy of EONs.After well learning operation,these Naive-LSTM classification agents in edge nodes of EONs are able to perform services awareness by obtaining data traffic characteristics from services traffics.Test results show that the proposed approach is feasible and efficient to improve edge computing ability of EONs.

Dear editor,This letter presents a deep learning-based prediction model for the quality-of-service(QoS)of cloud services.Specifically,to improve the QoS prediction accuracy of cloud services,a new QoS prediction model is proposed,which is based on multi-staged multi-metric feature fusion with individual evaluations.The multi-metric features include global,local,and individual ones.Experimental results show that the proposed model can provide more accurate QoS prediction results of cloud services than several state-of-the-art methods.

Introduction:Community-based services for psychosis are an important part of mental health services in China.We analyzed community-based follow-up and treatment services for psychosis in China in 2019 to provide evidence for policymaking and services delivering.Methods:Data from the National Information System for Psychosis were used to analyze usage of the information system and the registration,management,and treatment situation of patients with psychosis in China in 2019 and compared the results of 2019 with that of 2018.Results:In 2019,100%of cities and counties used the information system and 6,230,157 patients were registered.In 2019,there were 5,944,724 registered patients(94.05%)in China under community-based follow-up services and 5,375,252 patients(85.04%)had regular follow-ups;5,295,657 patients(83.78%)were treated by taking antipsychotics and 3,354,251(53.07%)patients took medication regularly;4,974,314 patients at home(87.81%)were in stable condition;and there was a significant difference in patients’stable condition and medication-taking rates among eastern,central,and western regions(p<0.05).Compared with 2018,the nationwide regular management rate,medication-taking rate,regular medication-taking rate,and patients’stable rate increased by 2.35%,2.48%,11.29%,and 7.21%respectively.Conclusions and Implications for Public Health Practice:Compared with 2018,the level of management and treatment improved significantly but still needs to be further strengthened,especially in western China.
