Synthesis of covalent organic framework materials and their application in the field of sensing

Covalent organic frameworks(COFs)are an emerging type of porous crystalline polymers formed by combining strong covalent bonds with organic building blocks.Due to their large surface area,high intrinsic pore space,good crystallization properties,high stability,and designability of the resultant units,COFs are widely studied and used in the fields of gas adsorption,drug transport,energy storage,photoelectric catalysis,electrochemistry,and sensors.In recent years,the rapid development of the Internet of Things and people’s yearning for a better life have put forward higher and more requirements for sensors,which are the core components of the Internet of Things.Therefore,this paper reviews the recent progress of COFs in synthesis methods and sensing applications,especially in the last five years.This paper first introduces structure,properties,and synthesis methods of COFs and discusses advantages and disadvantages of different synthesis methods.Then,the research progress of COFs in different sensing fields,such as metal ion sensors,gas sensors,biomedical sensors,humidity sensors,and pH sensors,is introduced systematically.Conclusions and prospects are also presented in order to provide a reference for researchers concerned with COFs and sensors.

Nested microring resonator with a doubled free spectral range for sensing application

The microring resonator has received increas- ing attention in the optical sensing application because of its micro-size, optical property, and high sensitivity. An additional waveguide is commonly used to change the output spectra in the early research on microring resonators. In this study, we proposed a nested microring resonator that doubles the free spectral range （FSR） compared with the conventional single microring. This structure improved the sensing property as the FSR in the filter output spectra could be considered as a measurement range in the microring sensor. Moreover, the parameters including the coupling coefficient of the three coupling sections, length of the U-bend waveguide, and effective index of a waveguide were tested and carefully selected to optimize the sensing properties. The relationship between these parameters and the output spectra was demonstrated. With linear sensitivity, the structure has a good potential in sensing application.

Drawing Tower In-Line Fabrication and the Spectrum Analysis of Sampled Fiber Grating

Sampled fiber grating is a special superstructure fiber Bragg grating with a wide range of applications in many fields.In this work,based on drawing tower in-line fabrication system,a new preparation method of the sampled fiber grating is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.Experimental result shows that the obtained sampled fiber gratings possess dense reflection spectra,with a minimum reflection peak interval of only 0.09 nm.This method exhibits promising application prospect in the fabrication of the high-quality sampled fiber grating.On the other hand,the spectral characteristics of the sampled fiber grating are analyzed when the sub-grating is affected by the external physical quantities such as,in this paper,strain.Wavelength shift and intensity change in the reflection peak of the spectra indicate that the grating is affected differently by micro strains,due to the different spatial positions along the axis of the sampled fiber grating.This work is aimed at exploring the potential applications of the sampled fiber grating in quasi-distributed micro-area sensing with the millimeter level.
