Recently,micro-vibrational perception mechanisms of nocturnal arthropods such as scorpions and spiders are attracting increasingly more attention and *** relevant micro-vibrational receptors are exquisite,in terms of their comprehensive performance such as sensitivity,stability,high anti-interference,and ultralow-power *** this work,we find the Basitarsal Compound Slit sensilla (BCSS) of scorpion (Heterometrus petersii) are composed of the crack-shaped slits as mechanosensory structure and can efficiently detect substrate-borne vibrational signal in complex natural *** study on microstructures and mechanical properties of tissue phases constituting the BCSS reveals that the strategy of tessellation is used to make crack-shaped slit amplify the tiny mechanical *** addition,the magnitude-frequency characteristics of electrophysiological signals caused by vibration stimulation with different frequencies indicate that the scorpion is sensitive to micro-vibrational signals at a certain frequency ***,the vibrational perception mechanism based on geometrical amplification and resonance is proposed to explain how scorpions detect the tiny biotic vibrational signal efficiently in noise *** finding not only promotes our further understanding of ultra-sensitive mechanism of the vibrational receptors,but also provides biological inspiration for the next generation of mechanosensor for a broad range of applications.

Ultrastructure of the sensilla on antennae and mouthparts of larval and adult Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera:Plutellidae)

Plutella xylostella （L.）（Plutellidae） is an important agricultural pest throughout the world. In this study, the morphology of antennal and mouthpart sensilla in the larvae and adults of P. xylostella （L.） was observed by using a scanning electron microscope. The larval antennae possess six sensilla basiconica, two sensilla chaetica and one sensillum styloconicum. Larval mouthparts possess six types of sensilla： sensilla chaetica, sensilla digitiformia, sensilla epipharyngeal, sensilla basiconica, sensilla styloconica and sensilla placodea. In the adult, seven types of sensilla are found on the antennae in males and six types of sensilla （sensilla basiconica absent） occur in females. Sexual dimorphism is also found in the number and size of these sensilla on the antennae of adults. We describe for the first time the five types of sensilla on the mouthparts of the adult of P. xylostella. This study provides useful information for further research into the function of these sensilla, and better understanding the behavioral mechanisms involved in pest control.

Dendroctonus valens LeConte, an invasive forestry pest, is highly dependent on its olfactory system for vector-related activities such as host seeking, oviposition and population aggregation. The antennae are the primary olfactory organs in bark beetles. We describe 4 morphological types of sensilla on the antenna of D. valens: 1) 3 types of sensilla trichodea located at the apex and lateral surface of the club and innervated by 5, 0, 13 dendrites, respectively. 2) sensilla chaetica found on the the scape and funicle and innervated by 7 dendrites. 3) a pair of sensilla basiconica distributed almost on the three sensory bands innervated by 2 dendrites at the base, and 4) one flunted cone type of grooved peg dispersed throughout the sensory bands, but its ultrastructure was not investigated. The possible functions of these sensilla were discussed in relation to their morphology and the ultrastructure of four types of antennal sensilla.

*** The sensilla trichodea has been accepted as the receiver of sex pheromone in Lepidotera moths. In Antheraea polyphemus and A. pemyi, there are at least two types of sensilla trichodea with different lengths which are called the long and short sensilla trichodea. Two pheromone components (E-6, Z-11-16 :Ac, E-6, Z-11-16:Al) are known of A. polyphemus.

Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) Observations of Antennal sensilla of Chrysopa pallens Rambur(Neuroptera：Chrysopidae)

[Objectives]The paper was to provide background information for ongoing research on relationship between smell and behavior of the green lacewing Chrysopa pallens（ Rambur）（ Neuroptera： Chrysopidae）. [Methods]The submicroscopic structure of antennal sensilla of C. pallens was examined using scanning electron microscopy. [Results]Antennae of female and male C. pallens were linear in shape and（ 1. 52 ± 0. 08） and（ 1. 58 ± 0. 23） cm in length,respectively. The scape and pedicel were composed of single sub-segment,while the flagellum consisted of 116 sub-segments,on which most sensilla distributed. The flagella of female and male antennae were（ 1. 44 ± 0. 04） and（ 1. 47 ± 0. 13） cm in length,respectively. Nine morphological sensilla types were recorded in both sexes,including four types of highly abundant and widely distributed sensilla trichodea（ ST Ⅰ,ST Ⅱ,ST Ⅲ and ST Ⅳ）,three types of sensilla basiconica（ SB Ⅰ,SB Ⅱ,and SB Ⅲ）,and one of each type of sensilla chaetica and B9 hm bristles. Although the shape,structure,numbers,and distribution of antennae of females and males were basically similar,major differences were recorded between the sexes in the length of some sensilla types. Both the ST Ⅲ and SB Ⅰ in female adults were significantly longer than that in male ones. Notably,SB Ⅱ was found only in female. [Conclusions]The paper laid a foundation for revealing the relationship between smell and behavior,playing a crucial role in promoting the important biological control effect of C. pallens in farmland ecological system.

Effects of Various Degrees of Antennal Ablation on Mating and Oviposition Preferences of the Diamondback Moth,Plutella xylostella L.

Using scanning electron microscopy, we investigated the distribution of the trichoid, basiconic, and coeloconic sensilla on the antennae of the diamondback moth （DBM;Plutella xylostella）. The trichoid sensilla were the most abundant sensory organ, and the male moth antennae host signiifcantly more trichoid sensilla than female moth antennae. Conversely, basiconic and coeloconic sensilla were found more frequently on female than on male antennae. We performed experiments with various degrees of antennal ablation and demonstrated that DBM antennae played a key role in the control of mating and oviposition. We found that neither oviposition preference nor mating behaviors changed signiifcantly when less than 1/4 of both antennae were removed. However, there was a signiifcant behavioral change when the antennae were ablated by more than half. As the length of the antenna was shortened, the successful mating rate decreased and mating peak was delayed. An otherwise consistent host preference for oviposition was eliminated when both antennae were completely removed. Furthermore, we found that the number of trichoid sensilla was positively correlated with mating rate and oviposition preference. However, the numbers of basiconic and coeloconic sensilla were not correlated with mating rate and mating peak, but highly correlated with oviposition preference. Taken together, our results indicate that antennal sensory information plays a critical role in the mating and oviposition behaviors of this economically important pest.

The olfactory system of Pieris brassicae caterpllars:from receptors to glomeruli

Tolfactory system of adult lepidopterans is among the best described neuronal ***,comparatively little is known about the organization of the olfactory system in the larval stage of these ***,we explore the expression of olfactory receptors and the organization of olfactory sensory neurons in caterpillars of Pieris brassicae,a significant pest species in Europe and a well-studied species for its chemical *** describe the larval olfactory system in this species,we first analyzed the head transcriptome of third-instar larvae(L3)and identified 16 odorant receptors(ORs)including the OR coreceptor(Orco),13 ionotropic receptors(IRs),and 8 gustatory receptors(GRs).We then quantified the expression of these 16 ORs in different life stages,using qPCR,and found that the majority of ORs had significantly higher expression in the L4 stage than in the L3 and L5 stages,indicating that the larval olfactory system is not static throughout caterpillar *** an Orco-specific antibody,we identified all olfactory receptor neurons(ORNs)expressing the Orco protein in L3,L4,and L5 caterpillars and found a total of 34 Orco-positive ORNs,distributed among three sensilla on the *** number of Orco-positive ORNs did not differ among the three larval ***,we used retrograde axon tracing of the antennal nerve and identified a mean of 15 glomeruli in the larval antennal center(LAC),suggesting that the caterpillar olfactory system follows a similar design as the adult olfactory system,although with a lower numerical *** together,our results provide a detailed analysis of the larval olfactory neurons in P brassicae,highlighting both the differences as well as the commonalities with the adult olfactory *** findings contribute to a better understanding of the development of the olfactory system in insects and its life-stage-specific adaptations.

A new species in the genus Dimorphacanthella(Collembola: Isotomidae) from Sichuan Province, Southwest China

Dimorphacanthella sichuanensis Gao & Bu sp. nov. from Sichuan Province, China is described. It is characterized by the presence of two pairs of sensilla on Abd. Ⅲ, 4 + 4 axial setae on Abd. Ⅱ and Ⅲ with Md seta present, and Abd. V with two pairs of slender medial sensilla and two pairs of thick lateral sensilla. The three known species of this genus are compared in detail.
