self-attenuation corrections calculated by LabSOCS Simulations for gamma-spectrometric measurements with HPGe detectors

Simulations from Laboratory Sourceless Object Counting System （LabSOCS） software were used to determine self-attenuation correction factor, which is defined as the efficiency ratio of the sample with the absorbing medium to that of the sample without absorbing medium. The semi-empirical self-attenuation correction formula F（μ） used to correct self-attenuation of a sample was applied. A comparison of the two methods reveals that formula of sample with φb75 mm× 25 mm and φ75 min×10 mm can be, respectively, used in the self-attenuation correction for p in the ranges of 0 to 0.5 cm-1 and 0.5 cm-1 to 2.0 cm-1, indicating that the semi-empirical formula will not be used when # has exceeded the interval. The semi-empirical formula value is consistent with the experimental value, within 7.9% accuracy. Therefore, this method is correct and effective. Both of our two methods can accurately produce a relative self-attenuation correction factor when the composition of the sample is known. The self-attenuation correction of a sample with unknown composition can only be carried out using a semi-empirical formula method.

Measurement and analysis of the ^(238)U(n, 2n) reaction rate in depleted uranium/polyethylene shells

In order to check the conceptual design of the subcritical blanket in a fusion-fission hybrid reactor, a depleted uranium/polyethylene simulation device with alternate shells has been established. The measurement of the 23SU（n, 2n） reaction rate was carried out using an activation technique, by measuring the 208 keV T rays emitted from 237U. The self-absorption of depleted uranium foils with different thicknesses was experimentally corrected. The distribution of the 23SU（n, 2n） reaction rate at 90° to the incident D＋ beam was obtained, with uncertainty between 5.3% and 6.0%. The experiment was analyzed using MCNP5 code with the ENDF/BVI library, and the calculated results are all about 5% higher than the measured results.

A calibration-free model for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy using non-gated detectors

Calibration-free(CF)laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS)is normally only applicable for gated detectors due to its dependence on the assumption of a steady-state ***,most currently available LIBS systems are equipped with non-gated detectors such as chargecoupled device(CCD),which degrades the accuracy of CF *** this paper,the reason for the less satisfactory quantification performance of CF for LIBS with non-gated detectors was clarified and a time-integration calibration-free(TICF)model was proposed for applications with non-gated *** was based on an assumed temporal profile of plasma properties,including temperature and electron density,obtained from another *** line intensity at different time during the signal collection time window was estimated with self-absorption correction according to the temporal profile of the plasma *** proposed model was validated on titanium alloys and compared with traditional *** accuracy of elemental concentration measurement was improved significantly:the average relative error of aluminum and vanadium decreased from 6.07%and 22.34%to 2.01%and 1.92%,*** quantification results showed that TICF method was able to extend the applicability of CF to LIBS with non-gated detectors.
