Se/C as a novel carbon-based biomaterial was prepared by using cheap and abundant glucose as the carbon source.It was highly active and could well restrain Xanthomonas campestris pv.campestris(EC50=4.7403 μg/mL),a very harmful germ causing the devastating cabbage black rot disease and resulting in huge economic losses.As a type of carbon material insoluble in wate r,Se/C is bio-compatible and can adhere onto the leaves of the plants to allow a slow and sustained release of its efficacy,affording an efficient method for the cabbage black rot disease prevention and cure.This work as the first report on the bioactivity studies of Se/C significantly expands the application scopes of the selenium-containing materials and may draw continuous attentions from a broad field.

selenium is an essential nutrient closely related to redox homeostasis in the body.A redox imbalance will adversely affect the microenvironment inside and outside the cell,leading to cell death.Various types of cell death have been discovered in recent years,but the role(s)of selenium and the associated mechanism(s)of action require further elaboration.We review the roles and mechanisms of action of selenium in cell necrosis,apoptosis,ferroptosis,autophagy,and pyroptosis.Under normal conditions,selenium inhibits cell necrosis,apoptosis,ferroptosis,autophagy,and pyroptosis by downregulating the nuclear factorκB pathway,upregulating antiapoptotic proteins,decreasing oxidative stress,increasing antioxidant enzyme activity,enhancing the mTOR pathway,and downregulating the NLRP3/caspase-1 pathway,thereby helping to maintain the normal physiological functions of cells.On the other hand,selenium deficiency leads to activation of the PI3K/AKT and Notch/Hes1 pathways,causing a significant increase in the level of oxidative stress in the organism,resulting in cell necrosis,apoptosis,and pyroptosis.In the case of malignancy,the in vivo metabolite of inorganic selenium,hydrogen selenide,plays an antitumor role by inducing apoptosis and ferroptosis in tumor cells because of its high redox activity.In conclusion,an adequate level of selenium in the body is essential for maintaining normal cellular physiological functions and reducing fibrotic alterations.Furthermore,the in vivo metabolites of inorganic selenium may have some clinical value in antitumor therapy.

Penaeus chinensis were reared in fibreglass tanks for the study of their selenium requirements. The shrimp were fed semipurified diets containing graded levels of selenium, and weight gains, activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and selenium contents in muscle and hepatopancreas were determined. Weight gain and GSH-Px activity were the highest when the shrimp were fed diet containing 20 mg/kg selenium; Good linear correlation was found between GSH-Px activities and selenium contents in the diets, and the number of healthy shrimp. The experiment showed that 20 mg/kg selenium in the diet is optimal for the shrimp and that GSH-Px activity can be an important biochemical index of the selenium nutrition status of the animal.

selenium （Se） plays a specific role in human health, especially for its anti- tumor effect. Incorporation of selenium into biocompatible hydroxyapatite （HAP） may endow the materials with novel characteristics. In the current work, a series of seleniumdoped hydroxyapatite （Se-HAP） nanoparticles with different SelP ratios were synthesized by a modified chemical precipitation. It was revealed that the powders with/without heattreatment were nano-sized needle-like HAP while the heat-treated samples have high crystallinity. The addition of selenium decreases the crystallinity of the synthesized apatite, and also takes a negative effect on the thermal stability of the as-prepared powders. The Se-HAP nanoparticles with Se/P molar ratio not more than 5% sintered at 900℃ can achieve good crystallinity and thermal stability.

selenium and tellurium are recovered from copper anodic slimes by oxidizing selenium and tellurium in werk acidic aqueous solution using H 2O 2 as oxidant and then separated at a proper pH value and reduced by adding the acidity sodium sulfite. The recoveries of selenium and tellurium are 99% and 98% respectively, and their purities are both >99%.

Most of the mercury and selenium exist in the insoluble fraction of dolphin liver. After the insoluble fraction was digested by alkaline protease in the presence of 1%SDS, approximately 50% of Hg and Se consisted in the supernatant and the others in the residue. Gel filtration chromatography of the hydrolysate showed that 96% of Hg and 87% of Se were combined with the high molecular weight proteins stably, which cannot be substituted by the complex reagents. Mercury and selenium in the residue were confirmed as HgSe crystal.

Reactive oxygen species（ROS） plays a key role in human heart diseases. Glutathione peroxidase（GPX） functions as an antioxidant as it catalyzes the reduction of hydroperoxide. In order to investigate the antioxidant effect of human selenium-containing single-chain Fv（Se-scFv-B3）, a new mimic of GPX, a model system of hydrogen peroxide（H202）-induced rat cardiac myocyte damage was established. The cardiac myocyte damage was characte- rized in terms of cell viability, lipid peroxidation, cell membrane integrity, and intracellular H202 level. The Se-scFv-B3 significantly reduced H2O2-induced cell damage as shown by the increase of cell viability, the decline of malondialdehyde（MDA） production, lactate dehydrogenase（LDH） release, and intracellular H2O2 level. So Se-scFv-B3 may have a great potential in the treatment of human heart diseases induced by ROS.

Single-chain fragment variable（ScFv） antibodies with the substrate binding sites were obtained by repetitive selections from a semi-synthetic phage display antibody library against two haptens——thyroxine（T4） and O-methyl-T4（O-CH3-T4）.The positive phage clones were determined by ELISA and then cloned into vector pET30a（＋）.The recombined plasmids were identified by DNA sequence analysis and transformed into E.coli BL21（DE3）.The expressed proteins were isolated,purified,identified by Western blot analysis,and finally the catalytic group——selenocysteine was incorporated into the antibodies binding sites by chemical mutation.The type·thyroxine deiodinase activities of the abzymes were 0.006 and 0.008 pg·mL-1·min-1,respectively,which were about one tenth that of the mouse intact antibody that was obtained from hybridoma.
