Emmenopterys henryi Oliv. (Rubiaceae) is an endangered tree species that is native to China. The wild populations of E. henryi have declined rapidly because of its poor natural regeneration, but the actual regeneration processes are not yet understood. In field tracking surveys and experiments in the Wuyishan Nature Reserve in Southeast China to determine the most important stage that affects the regeneration process, seed bank characteristics, seed germination, and seedling growth dynamics were studied in the typical habitats of E. henryi, Phyllostachys pubescens and broad-leaved forests. Results showed that in both P. pubescens and broad-leaved forests, more than 70% of the E. henryi seeds were distributed in moss and litter layers, and few were found in the soil beneath them. However, seed germination in the soil layer was significantly higher than in the moss and litter layers. seed density, overall seed quality, and germination rate in the broad-leaved forest were significantly higher than in P. pubescens forest. seed germination was highest in the microsites around the edge of the crown projection area of E. henryi mother trees. The order of survival rate of the seedlings on different ground surfaces was soil > moss > litter. In both habitats, the average seed density was 24.9 seeds m(-2), and the total germination rate was less than 3.5 parts per thousand. However, seedlings developed from only 1% of the germinated seeds, indicating that the seed germination is the most important stage in the natural regeneration of E. henryi.

Aims The ability to form persistent seed banks is one of the best predictors of species’potential to establish in new *** sunflower is native to North America where the formation of persistent seed banks is promoted by disturbance and it plays a key role on the establishment and persistence of native ***,the role of the seed banks on the establishment and persistence of invasive populations has not been ***,we evaluated the role of seed bank and disturbance on the establishment and fitness,and seed persistence in the soil in several sunflower biotypes collected in ruderal(wild Helianthus annuus)and agrestal(natural crop–wild hybrid)habitats of Argentina as well as volunteer populations(progeny of commercial cultivars).Methods In a seed-bank experiment,we evaluated emergence,survival to reproduction,survival of emerged seedlings,inflorescences per plant and per plot under disturbed and undisturbed conditions over 2 years;in a seed-burial experiment,we evaluated seed persistence in the soil over four springs(6,18,30 and 42 months).Important Findings Overall,seedling emergence was early in the growing season(during winter),and it was promoted by disturbance,especially in the first *** this,the number of inflorescences per plot was similar under both conditions,especially in *** the second year,emergence from the seed bank was much lower,but the survival rate was *** the seed-burial experiment,genetic differences were observed but seeds of ruderals and agrestals persisted up to 42 months while seeds of the volunteer did not persist longer than 6 *** agrestal biotype showed an intermediate behavior between ruderals and volunteers in both *** findings showed that wild and crop–wild sunflower can form persistent seed banks outside its native range and that disturbance may facilitate its establishment in new areas.

Spatial and temporal patterns of seed bank dynamics in relation to gaps in an old growth tropical montane rainforest of Hainan Island, South China, were studied over two consecutive years. From June 2001 to June 2003, soil seed bank sampling blocks were taken near each of the four sides of each seed trap and immediately put into a nursery for observation of seedling emergence dynamics in four seasons （each experiment in each season）. The abundances of seedlings that emerged from seed banks showed the trend of vine functional group （VFG）〉 shrub functional group （SFG）〉 tree functional group （TFG）〉 herb functional group （HFG）, but the trend in species richness of seedlings that emerged from the soil seed banks was TFG 〉 VFG 〉 SFG 〉 HFG. The abundances of seedlings that emerged from seed banks in the three gap zones showed no significant differences, but significant differences did exist for the species richness. The time of sampling or seasons of experiments had significant influences on both the species richness and seedling abundances. The seedling emergence processes of each experiment all revealed the unimodal patterns. Few emergences occurred 1 year after each experiment. Compared with those under closed canopies, the recruitment rates from seed to seedlings and from seedlings to saplings In gaps were higher, but the mortality rates from saplings to big trees were also higher in the gaps.

In grassland ecosystems,burrowing mammals create disturbances,providing habitat for animal species and increasing plant community *** investigated whether seedling assemblages on Richardson's ground squirrel Urocitellus richardsonii mounds result from seed rearrangement or environmental changes that favor germination of certain species over *** test whether ground squirrels rearrange the seed bank by burrowing,we compared seed compositions among mounds,burrows,and undisturbed *** test whether ground squirrels change environmental conditions,we compared soil nitrate and bare ground cover on and off *** also compared seedlings that germinated on mounds with seedlings that germinated on artificial disturbances from which we removed aboveground *** nitrate and bare ground cover were significantly higher on mounds than artificial *** seed richness and abundance did not differ among mounds,burrows,and undisturbed soil,seedling richness was reduced on mounds relative to artificial *** disturbance favors seedlings that can capitalize on bare ground availability but are less able to immobilize nitrate,as opposed to perennial species that immobilize more nitrate but take longer to *** results suggest that Richardson's ground squirrels act as ecosystem engineers,although future research following succession on ground squirrel mounds is necessary to understand how they influence plant communities past the seedling stage.

To understand the natural regeneration of manchurian ash and the seed banks under various secondary stands, we have investigated the seed quantity and vitality of major trees in the ground floor of the stands. In natural secondary stands and dahurian larch plantations with seed source of manchurian ash around them, the vital seed numbers of valuable trees (mono maple, manchurian ash, amur linden, manchurian linden, manchurian walnut) are 20933/ha and 18000/ha respectively. The numbers of manchurian ash seeds arc 11000/ha and 12133/ha respectively. It has been found that litter affects the seedling recruitment of manchurian ash. When the seeds were sown on the litter and under the litter respectively, the final seedling recruitment rates were 17.9 and 28.9% respectively. The peak of seedling recruitment in the former case occurred one year later.

Soil seed bank assembly following secondary succession on abandoned agricultural fields in Nicaragua

The composition and density of seeds in soils of secondary forests derived on abandoned fields after 4, 9 and 14 years of aban- donment were quantified to examine whether the soil seed bank assembles during secondary succession as the plant communities assemble. A total of 18, 37 and 48 soil samples from 4-, 9- and 14-year old sites, respectively were collected in 15 cm × 15 cm plots up to 9 cm depth. A total of 3, 5 and 9 species were found on sites abandoned 4, 9 and 14 years ago, respectively, Among different life forms, trees were highly represented in the soil seed bank of 9-year （60%） and 14-year （33%） old sites compared to 4-year old site entirely dominated by non- woody flora. The total number of seeds ranged from 327 in the 4-year old site to 146 in the 14-year old site, and the corresponding density of viable seeds ranged from 141 seeds m^-2 in the 4- year old site to 26 seeds m^-2 in the 14-year old site with a consistent decreasing pattern in the chronosequence. The similarity between the soil seed flora and the standing woody vegetation was low for both 9- and 14-year old sites while complete dissimilarity was found for 4-year old site. We concluded that the species composition of soil seed banks assemble gradually during secondary succession, but the overall seed density is still low for natural regeneration of trees to rely on. To expedite the recovery of secondary forests on such abandoned fields, the seed bank needs to be supplemented by direct seeding, enrichment planting of desired species and installing artificial perches for facilitating seed dispersal.

Aims Vegetation succession depends on the availability of suitable prop-agules in the soils,thus knowledge of soil seed banks is essential for formulating effective strategies for restoring the vegetation of degraded *** W National Park,the only trans-boundary bio-sphere reserve in West Africa,is being extensively fragmented and degraded in recent *** aims of this study were to assess the reserve’s soil seed banks,their relationships with standing veg-etation and bundle of disturbances and their potential significance for vegetation *** The size and composition of the above-ground species vegetation were assessed in nine plots of 1 ha each representing a range of habitats with differing disturbance severity(low,intermediate and high).A total of 702 soil samples were taken from three layers(0-3,3-6 and 6-9 cm)and soil seed bank was analyzed using the seed-ling emergence *** Findings Generally,seeds of non-woody taxa dominated in samples from all soil depths and habitats of all disturbance *** mean soil seed density was 17.8,24.4 and 26.3 seeds/dm^(3) in samples from the least,intermediate and most disturbed sites,respectively,and highest in the upper soil layers in all *** results indi-cate that there is limited potential for restoring woody vegetation solely from soil seed banks,and that woody species in the region rely more on recently shed seeds trapped in the standing dead biomass and litter on the ground than soil seed banks for ***,human intervention is needed to accelerate forest recovery,mainly through alleviating anthropogenic impacts on the ecosystem(for instance,avoiding destruction of new seeds by intense fire),and site manipulation to improve environmen-tal conditions for seedling establishment and *** ways of restoring forests than through the soil seed bank(*** seeds collected elsewhere,and planting tree seedlings)could also be relevant.
