During the field work of the 1998～1999’s and 1999～2000’s Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (CHNARE) in the Grove Mountains, east Antarctica, some Cenozoic sedimentary debris are found in two terminal moraine banks over the blue ice near Harding Mount in the center of this region. All the debris are of characteristics of glaciogenic diamicton and belong to the products of the glacial movements of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. In this paper, the authors make a detailed study on the sedimentary environments of the sedimentary debris through petrologic, sedimentological, mineralogical, and geo chemical methods. Characteristics of their sedimentary textures and structures, grain size distributions, quartz grains’ surface textures and features, together with their geo chemical compositions all show that these sedimentary rocks are a kind of subglacial lodgement tills which are deposited in the ice sheet frontal area by reactions of glacial movements and glaciogenic melt water. Their palaeoenvironmental implications in revealing the retreat history of East Antarctic Ice Sheet are discussed. The authors draw the conclusion from current study that the glacial frontal of the East Antarctica Ice Sheet might have been retreated to this area during the Pliocene Epoch, which represents a warm climate event accompanied by a large scale ice sheet retreat in Antarctica at that time.

The authors＇ work concerns the study of sedimentary environments, the geometry and the characteristics of the silicon-clastic deposits within the basin of EI Ma Labiod at the Algero-Tunisian confines. The sedimentological analysis has proved a Miocene age of the sediments with varied environments： marine, fluvial-deltaic and lake. The geological aspect of the sediment, in particular sandy, is of the movable type or very slightly consolidated. The size of the industrial sand layers can be very diverse, however to feed from the industrial consumers having a certain perenniality, our prospection was directed towards layers with very important reserves. It is about a sedimentary basin with dimensions exceeding very largely the conditions of operating for such projects, which are at least one to two million tons. With the exception of a thin quaternary soil horizon, the basin is almost of an exploitation with open sky. The mineralogical determination has revealed siliceous to extra-siliceous sands, which are absolutely usable in the industry of glass, foundry and also in other functions like the abrasives of sanding and the clothing industry of the sandpapers. Concerning the economic aspect, the materials are very close and this is why the area has known the installation of a glassmaking factory and a cement factory using at the same time the Maastrichtian limestone, the sandy material and the clays of the Western zone of the basin.

Some new thoughts of definitions of terms of sedimentary facies:Based on Miall's paper(1985)

In recent years,the Journal of Palaeogeography(Chinese Edition and English Edition)continually received manuscripts,in which some authors are from China and some are from Pakistan,Lithuania,Morocco,South Africa,*** authors of these manuscripts,according to the viewpoint and method of Miall’s paper(1985),selected rocks from each bed in the clastic sections of their study areas and induced some rock types,such as conglomerates,sandstones and fine-grained stones,and considered them as *** does not conform to the definition of lithofacies.I wrote some papers,i.e.,Feng(2018,2019,2020),to point out the problems and hope that the authors worldwide,especially Chinese authors,will not continually cite,spread and follow Miall’s paper(1985)viewpoint and method *** is the first person who considered rocks(in fact,the sediments)as lithofacies and proposed a facies analysis *** viewpoint and facies analysis method confused the definition of facies and facies analysis *** current paper is a special article to discuss the principal problems of Miall’s paper(1985),i.e.,he considered the sediments as lithofacies and utilized lithofacies to analyze facies,but not to discuss the contributions and less strictness of architectural elements of his ***,I have to declare that the facies in my current paper is the facies of sedimentary petrology,but not of other geological disciplines,such as igneous petrology,metamorphic petrology,palaeontology,stratigraphy,geophysics,***,the definitions of facies and lithofacies are *** current paper will adhere to the policy of“A hundred flowers blossom and a hundred schools of thought contend”.I hope that through academic discussions,contends and geological practice,these problems will be solved gradually.

Spatial and Seasonal Variations of Heavy Metals in Wetland Soils of the Tidal Flats in the Yangtze Estuary, China: Environmental Implications

The environment of estuarine wetlands has been attracting worldwide attention. To study the spatial distribution of pollutants in the tidal flats of the Yangtze Estuary, Southeast China, the Eastern Tidal Flat of Chongming Island (EC) and the Jiuduansha Shoal (JS) of the estuary were selected as the study sites. At each of the two sites, a cross-transect from land to sea was established and topsoil and soil core samples in the cross-transect were collected spatially and seasonally to determine their contents of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Mn, and Fe) and grain-size characteristics. The results showed that the heavy metal loads were commonly higher in the soils of nearshore high tidal flats and had a tendency of decreasing from land to sea at both of the study sites. The contents of heavy metals in the soils of the high and medial tidal flats were mostly higher in April and November but lower in July. Corresponding spatial and seasonal variations in grain size of the intertidal soils were also observed at the two study sites. The soils in the nearshore high tidal flats were finer and gradually got coarser seawards; they were relatively finer in April and November but coarser in July. Furthermore, the contents of heavy metals in the intertidal soils of both the sites EC and JS were significantly positively correlated with the clay (63 μm) and 20-63 μm fractions, which suggested that the heavy metals in the intertidal soils were primarily combined with the fine particulate fraction (sedimentary environments in the estuary. The results of this study may also contribute to a better understanding of the soil formation and classification in the tidal flats of the Yangtze Estuary.
