Growth and luminescence properties of Eu-doped HfO2/α-Al2O3 eutectic scintillator

HfO2/a-A12O3 eutectics were grown by the micro-pulling down （μ-PD） method at the composition of 63.2 mol.% of-A1203, 35.512 mol.% HfO2, 0.92 mol.% Eu203 and 0.368 tool.% Y2O3. Rod phases with around 3-4 μm diameter were observed on the transverse cross-section. The phase-separated scintillator fibers （PSSFs） structure with fibers of around 3-4 μm diameter and 10-20 μm length was observed. The electron back scattering patterns indicated crystal orientation of [101] for monoclinic HfO2 rod phase and [0001] for μt-A1203 matrix in the transverse cross-section. Eu3＋ 4f-4f emission was observed at 550-750 nm.

Mixed crystal strategy is an effective approach of improving the luminescence properties of optical materials and has been adopted widely in many *** this paper,the La-mixed Gd_(2)Si_(2)O_(7):Ce polycrystalline samples were successfully synthesized by a sol-gel *** crystal structure and luminescence properties were confirmed and discussed by XRD,UV-Vis luminescence spectra,and XEL,*** vacuum ultraviolet excitation spectra and thermoluminescence glow curves were also systematically investigated and discussed at varied temperature.A combination of the first-principles calculations and optical characterization experiments was employed to study the electronic band structure of host material,revealing that the band gap is narrowed and the 5d_(1) level of Ce^(3+) shifts to higher energy as the La content *** luminescence the rmo-stability and activation energy were also measured and *** indicates that thermo-stability is strongly dependent on the La *** effective approach is developed to tune the electronic band structure,luminescence properties and thermostability of(Gd_(1-x)La_(x))_(2)Si_(2)O_(7):Ce scintillator by adjusting La/Gd ratio.

Fast beam range measurements are required to maximize the time available for patient treatment, given that the beam range requires verification with respect to quality assurance to maintain accelerator commissioning standards and ensure patient safety. A novel beam range monitor based on a plastic scintillator and multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) arrays is therefore proposed in this paper. The monitor was constructed using 128 plastic scintillator films with a thickness of 1 mm and an active area of 50 × 50 mm^(2). A customized MPPC array read the scintillation light of each film. The advantage of dividing the active detector volume into films is that it intercepts the particle beam and enables direct differential light yield measurement in each film, in addition to depth-light curve generation without the need for image analysis A GEANT4 simulation, including scintillator quenching effects, was implemented, and the results revealed that Birks’ law exhibited a slight little influence on the position of the beam range, only changing the shape and absolute normalization of the Bragg curve, which is appropriate for the calculation of the beam range using the depth-light curve. The performance of the monitor was evaluated using a heavy-ion medical machine in Wuwei City, Gansu Province, China. The beam range measurement accuracy of the monitor was 1 mm, and the maximum difference between the measured and reference ranges was less than0.2%, thus indicating that the monitor can meet clinica carbon ion therapy requirements.

The synthesis of cerium-doped lutetium oxyorthosilicate(LSO)polycrystalline powders was investigated by a hydrothermal *** precursor was obtained by the hydrothermal reaction of Lu(NO_(3))_(3)with Na_(2)SiO_(3)at 200℃for 10 h by using urea as precipitator,fol-lowed by a calcination uader proper *** results of XRD indicated that the precursor was crystallized into A-type LSO phase at 1000℃,and transfetrred to B-type LSO phase when temperature was raised above 1050℃.After being heated at 1250℃for 2 h,single phase of B-type LSO powder was synthesized with homogeneous distribution of particle size ranging from 200 to 300 *** photolumi-nescence spectrum of as-synthesized LSO:Ce powders showed a typical broad emission peak centered at 404 nm,corresponding to the 5d^(1)-4f transition of Ce^(3+).

To explore novel nano-scintillator with a controllable architecture, pure and Eu3＋doped lutetium oxyfluoride （Lu7O6F9） powder were synthesized by combining mild hydrothermal method and solid state calcination approach. The products were all pure orthorhombic Vernier phase demonstrated by X-ray powder diffraction （XRD）. The detailed crystal structure was also studied by Reitveld refinement. Lath-like microcrystals composed of nanoparticles with unique hollow tube of the products were supported by the images of scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and transmission electron microscopy （TEM）. Excited by X-ray with W as the target, the pure product showed intense broad emission with the peak at about 400 nm suitable for modern photoelectric multiplier tube （PMT）, while the Eu^3＋doped sample transferred the incident energy to Eu3＋ions and gave strong ^5D0→^7Fj （j=0, 1, 2 and 4） emis-sion, which fitted for imaging and labeling measurements. From the luminescent properties, both pure and Eu^3＋-doped products are potential excellent scintillator for X-ray imaging and other high energy detectors, and the pure product is also a good host candidate for rare earth doping.

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer(DAMPE) is a space-borne apparatus for detecting the highenergy cosmic-ray-like electrons, γ-rays, protons and heavy ions. The Plastic scintillator Detector(PSD)is the top-most sub-detector of the DAMPE. The PSD is designed to measure the charge of incident highenergy particles and it also serves as a veto detector for discriminating γ-rays from charged particles. In this paper, a PSD on-orbit calibration procedure is described, which includes the five steps of pedestal, dynode correlation, response to minimum-ionizing particles, light attenuation function and energy reconstruction.A method for reconstructing the charge of incident high energy cosmic-ray particles is introduced. The detection efficiency of each PSD strip is verified to be above 99.5%; the total efficiency of the PSD for charged particles is above 99.99%.

Ce (3+) doped Y_3Al_5O_(12) (Ce (3+)∶YAG) single crystal is an good scintillator due to its excellent thermal,mechanic and scintillant performances. In this paper,its vacuum ultraviolet and fluorescence spectra using the synchrotron radiation as the excitation source was studied. The ultraviolet-visible excitation and absorption spectra of Ce (3+)∶YAG were also measured. The excitation energy transfer process and the luminescent differences under direct excitation into the 5d bands of Ce (3+) and excitation of valence band in Ce (3+)∶YAG scintillator were studied.

To achieve a better time resolution of a scintillator-bar detector for a neutron wall at the external target facility of HIRFL-CSR,we have carried out a detailed study of the photomultiplier,the wrapping material and the coupling media. The timing properties of a scintillator-bar detector have been studied in detail with cosmic rays using a high and low level signal coincidence. A time resolution of 80 ps has been achieved in the center of the scintillator-bar detector.
