Study on Turbulence Effects for Beam Propagation in Turbulent Atmosphere

Based on the theory for the turbulence and the Rytov method, the propagation formulas of the scintillation index and the mean square angle-of-arrival fluctuation for the beam propagation in atmospheric turbulence have been derived respectively. The propagation properties of the two turbulence effects have been investigated, and the effects of the characteristic parameters of turbulence and the beam parameters have been discussed. The results show that the variation of the two turbulence effects depends on the structure constant of the refractive index fluctuations Cn2, the inner scale of the turbulence l0, the waist width of source beam w0 and the wave length λ. Moreover, there are two parameters including Cn2 and l0 which show more significant effects in atmosphere. Consequently, a new method for determining the characteristics parameters of the turbulence by using the measurement of the scintillation index and the angle-of-arrival fluctuation has been proposed.

Light weight radioisotope (LWR) 89Sr and 90Sr could be obtained from used rods in fission atomic plants. The economics of the disposal of nuclear bars indicate the convenience to develop added value applications. The difference in t1/2 allows 89Sr to deliver its energy at a rate 200 times higher than 90Sr. A large emission number of low penetrating power particles in a short time characterize 89Sr, which allows that these highly radioactive LWR involves a rather limited danger. Chemical similitude of calcium and strontium uptake has led to the use of 89Sr in treatment of bone cancer metastasis. 89Sr damages animal tissues because ionize water, but penetrates through the skin about: 5 to 8 mm. Hence, to obtain it in insoluble form, like obtaining 89Sr silicate, could make possible its wider use. Purifying 89Sr from contaminant 90Sr allows that after one year do not leave any contamination. LWR could be covered with scintillators substances, which by subtracting kinetic energy from beta-radiation, emit light and function as a major source of shielding. This treatment engineers Radioisotope Light Generators (RLG). Their light could activate photovoltaic cells (PV), which could lead to nano-devices without moving parts RLG-PV.

The motivation of this work was dictated by a concern of using bioaccumulative plant species likely to be used in the technique of bioindication. The obtained results and discussions proposed are approaches of chemist, because the mechanisms of the effect of cadmium on the various plant cells have been widely developed by several biologists. The use of labeled cadmium is important to study the uptake, the translocation and the metabolism at very low levels of this element in plants. Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), the model chosen for the investigation, was cultivated in vermiculite for 12 days. After this period, plants were transferred into 100 ml flasks containing nutrient solution and radioactive Cd-109 (γ, t1/2 = 461.3 days) with variable activity of: 0.05, 0.1 and 1.0 micro Currie (μCi). Samples were transferred to a growth room and left for periods of 4 and 7 days, then analyzed by the solid scintillation method. The counting was carried out for roots, stems and leaves.
