To reveal the petrological characteristics, metamorphic evolution histon and tectonic setting of the pelitic granulites from Ailaoshan Orogen, Uest Yunnan, China, a comprehensive study in mineral chemistry, petrogeochemistry and geochronology studies is presented in this paper. Two metamorphic stages of the granulites can be established:(1) the peak metamorphism recorded by the mineral assemblage of garnet, kyanite, K-feidspar and rutile, and the initial retrograde metamorphism shown by the mineral assemblage of garnet, sillimanite, sapphirine, spinel, K-feldspar, plagioclase and biotite;(2) the superim-posed metamorphism recorded by the mineral assemblage of biotite, muscovite, plagioclase, quartz and ilmenite. Zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating indicates that the protolith of the granulite was deposited after 337 Ma. The initial retrograde metamorphism occurred at P-T conditions of 8.6-12 kbar at 850-920℃ estimated by mineral assemblages, the low pressure limit of kyanite stability and GBPQ geothermobarometer in Indosinian (about 235 Ma), and the late superimposed metamorphism occurred at the P-T condition of 3.5-3.9 kbar at 572-576℃ estimated by GBPQ geothermobarometer since 33Ma. The first stage was related to the amalgamation of the South China and Indochina blocks during the Triassic, and the second stage was possibly related with the large scale sinistral slip-shearing since the Oligocene. It is inferred that the upper continental crust was suhducted/underthrusted to the lower continental crust (deeper than 30 km) and underwent granulite-facies metamorphism and then quickly exhumed to the middle-upper crust (10-12 km) and initial retrograde metamorphism occurred due to the collision of the Indochina and South China blocks during Indosinian, which was followed by superimposition of the second stage of metamorphism since the Oligocene.

Study of sapphirine and related mineral association in the high-grade region of the Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica, shows that sapphirine of the area is characterized by its magnesio-, iron- and aluminum-rich, but silica-poor feature, and the obvious intra- and intergrain changes in compositions. The change is mainly mani- fested as the Tschermark substitution （ Mg, Fe）＋ Si =2A1. In the high-grade meta-morphism and anatexis process the multistage crystallization of minerals occurred and resulted in the complexity of the mineral association, such as the differentiation of leuco-and melano-components. Among them, the mafic-rich minerals formed earlier, and the differentiation of magnesio-and iron-components is responsible for the earlier presence of iron-rich minerals and later crystallization of magnesio-rich minerals, thus the successive associations of multistage occurred. The rock composition is an important but not critical factor to the occurrence of sapphirine. It is the mobilization of components that accounts for the formation of sapphirine. The multistage evolution of mineral association to some degree reflects the changing composition and opening of the setting. It is therefore deduced that the protolith from which sapphirine is derived is not necessarily magnesio-rich pelite. The heterogeneity of sapphirine composition is resulted from the various media, not the PT changes. sapphirine formed at 840-880℃ ,not the so-called ultrahigh temperature condition（〉 1000℃）. Its formation is related to both the filtration and diffusion processes in high-grade metamor-phism and anatexis.

The tectonic mechanism responsible for the formation of high-temperature(HT)and ultrahightemperature(UHT)granulites(>850?C)at moderate pressure(7–13 kbar)is diverse and contentious,ranging from hot back-arc inversion and thickening,to lithospheric extension and underplating/intrusion of mafic magma,long-lived orogenic self-heating,and ridge *** fundamental reason for this is partly related to the fact that the prograde mineral assemblage and growth zoning are difficult to perserve due to HT diffusion,strong deformation and fluid/melt ***,the prograde heating reaction footprint is most likely preserved during a rapid tectonothermal *** the current paper,we discovered large-scale Spr-bearing metapelites that were originally Sil-Bt metapelite(M1)and preserved secondly Spr+Mag(M2)assemblage at the Shaerqin locality in the Daqingshan terrane of the North China *** is later replaced by spinel and cordierite corona(M3),all of which were further back-reacted and overprinted by fibrous sillimanite and retrograde biotite(M4).The well-preserved multistage prograde and retrograde mineral assemblages suggest a rapid tectonothermal process.A clockwise P-T path is confined with peak conditions of 860–890?C and 7.5–8.5 kbar,by phase equilibria modeling in the NCKFMASHTO *** involves a prograde heating evolution(possibly with slight decompression),a post-peak limited isothermal decompression,and a final isobaric cooling *** zircon and monazite U-Th-Pb dating constrained the near-peak metamorphic age of ca.1.86 *** rapid process recorded in the Spr-bearing metapelite at ca.1.86 Ga is likely caused by heating of the mantle-derived magma and controlled by an extension mechanism at the termination of the Paleoproterozoic continental–continental(or arc)collision during the amalgamation of the NCC.

Synthesis of Cordierite by Decomposition of Metal Nitrates on the Surface of Carbon Black Powder

Cordierite precursor was obtained through a process, which involved the decomposition of metal nitrates on the surface of ultrafine carbon black powder between 100-300℃ and the gasification of the carbon black at higher temperature in air. The average size of the particles, which were heat-treated at 700℃ for 10h, is about 1020nm, and the specific surface area is about 129m 2/g. The experimental results show that the ultrafine particles of cordierite precursor can be produced by this process. The precursor powder was calcined at different temperatures. X-ray diffraction examination indicates that β-quartz is crystallized from the amorphous matrix around 850℃ firstly and then MgO-Al 2O 3 spinel and α-cordierite appears. Above 1000℃, MgO-Al 2O 3 spinel and cristobalite disappear gradually and form an intermediate phase (sapphirine). At around 1300℃, the main phase is α-cordierite, and no other phase is detected.
