River mouth areas provide one of the most desired locations for human habitation. Although occupying only a small portion of the total length of the world’s shoreline, river mouths are dynamic and complex with highly variable physical and chemical *** size, shape, and position of a river’s mouth are dependent on its geologic and hydrologic history. Further, the processes that operate in a river’s mouth are affected by the sea and its currents, tides, and salinity. the river and its discharge and sediment characteristics; and wind generated waves and storm surges. Present-day locations are, geologically speaking, of recent origin because of the rise in sea level that accompanied deglaciation and the sedimentation that followed drowning.

To study the compositions of stable isotopes and trace elements in ostracode shells is animportant way to reconstruct lacustrine paleoenvironment. This experiment was conducted in Horticulture Department, School of Plant Production, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Duhok, Iraq in 2010 on Chrysanthemum plants, in order to mitigate the adverse influence of salinity.by the use of liquorice root extract and study its effect on vegetative growth, chlorophyll content in leaves from chlorophyll and assistant pigment, carbohydrate and starch. Subsequently, the trail consisted of three levels of salinity.（0, 4 and 8 ds m^-1） and three concentrations of the liquorice root extract 0, 2.5 and 5 g L^-1. Results showed that salinity.（4 ds m^-1） rate caused significant increases in certain vegetative characteristics （branches number, plant height, leaves number and leaf area）, photosynthetic pigments （Chl a, Chl b, total chlorophyll, a-carotene, β-carotene, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin）, fresh shoot weight, fresh root weight, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, shoot： root ratio, carbohydrate dry weight percentage and starch percentage as compared to untreated check. However, increasing salinity.rate to 8 ds m^-1 resulted in substantial reductions in all above mentioned Waits. Treatment with liquorices root extract, in particular, 5 g L^-1 manifested a potent capability in ameliorating the salinity.negative effects in terms of vegetative and photosynthetic pigments aspects.

Effect of Saline Water on Cadmium Uptake and Remediability of Soil with Brassica Napus

Phytoremediation is a new technique for cleaning contaminated soils. This method in comparison with the other techniques is very simple and low cost. Among the pollutants, heavy metals and specially cadmium （Cd） is very important because of its high movement in soil and high toxicity. Bioavailability of metals in the soil is affected by various factors including saline solution. In fact there are symptoms for increasing Cd uptake due to increasing C1＂1 concentration in soil solution. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of saline irrigation water on cadmium uptake and remediability of soil with Brassica napus （rapeseed） in greenhouse experiment. Saline waters of 0, 1.5 and 2.5 dS/m was applied on soil with different concentrations of Cd （5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 ppm） during the cultivation period of Okapi （fall rapeseed variety）. The results of this study showed that there are no significant differences in shoot dry matter exposed to Cd, but root dry matter decreased with increasing Cd concentration （p〈5%）. salinity.had a significant effect （p〈l%） on Cd concentration in roots and increased from 26.83 （in control） to 36.46 ***-1 dry wt （in 2.5 dS.m＂l treatment）. The significant effect （p〈5%） was found in shoots as well and the Cd uptake was increased from 2.14 to 3.25 mg.m^-1dry wt in control and 2.5 dS＇m^-1 treatments respectively. Likewise, salinity.increased bioaccumulation coefficient, whereas had no significant effect on transport factor. The obtained results showed that Cd metal tend to accumulate more in the roots ofBrassica napus than in the shoots.

The aim of this experimental work is to select wheat progenies tolerant high levels of salinity. Studies were conducted to determine the realized response in salt tolerance of some selected progeny （F3） through one cycle of screening and selection and the extent of variability for salt tolerance among selected progeny （F3） of wheat. All the selected progeny （F3） derived from （F2） populations after exposure are to high salinity.level, were tested for salt tolerance during all growth stages in sand cultures salinized with 0, 100, 175 mM NaCI as compared with the unselected progeny （F2）. Results showed that the selected progeny （F3） were in all cases except one, superior in yield at maturity and in most cases significantly so, both at 100 and 175 mM NaCl, to the yield of the unselected progeny （F2） controls. In this study, some selected progeny exhibited more than twice the seed yield compared with that obtained from unselected progeny at 175 mM NaCl, and their seed yield was also significantly higher than that at 0 mM NaCl. Results also indicated that the highest value percentage of realized response in salt tolerance was in （F3AS1） and （F3AS2） at 175 mM NaCI. It is important to bear in mind that the significant improvement in selected progeny was achieved just in a single cycle of selection. There is then a strong possibility that further increases in tolerance may be obtained through further cycles of selection till reaching F6 or F7 where would show genetics stability.
